One of the most obvious elements of the ambiance of the original Beacon was the beautiful aroma that wafted through the air within minutes of the lights going down before that first note was played.
What's the scoop on the smoking situation in the newly refurbished Dolan/MSG owned Beacon???

Even efore they refurbished, they started cracking down. Some of it has to do with the management, and some just has to do with the law I would imagine. It was probably much easier for management to look the other way when people were allowed to smoke cigarettes. What they do now in the Beacon is they have spotters. So they see people light up and they radio to the security in that section. They rip your ticket once, and sometimes they might just kick you out. Get caught twice, and maybe you can put your ear to the wall on the corner of walk and don't walk and listen from there.

Here's a fun trick, when the lights go out, just take a lighter, hold it about mouth high, but don't smoke anything, just have the lighter with the flame going. They'll come running for you, only to find you have nothing. Its fun. Seriously though, why risk a great performance by this band? Doesn't seem worth it. Although, it never hurts to try......just kidding, just kidding.

What is the policy as it pertains to performers, regardless of who it is? Seriously, does anyone know? I understand where management is coming from though, its their butts on the line if they want to crack down on the crowd. Its not like you can walk into any other commercial building in NYC and all of a sudden start lighting up. So I can see their side of it.

The main problem is the law. The city has become very strict in regards to smoking. The fines are very heavy for the establishment, an with the numbers of people involved it worse for theaters thna it is for say a local bar. With enough violations, they can lose their license.
As far as performers go, it gets kind of blurry. It is allowed for performers if it is part of the performance. But, how can the city prove it isn't, if the artist says it has become a signature of their style. The one artist that comes to mind is Keith Richards, I've seen him do it several times in the city
When I talk about smoking, I mean tobacco. Though weed is still illegal here
