There's probably no definitive answer but I think its a somewhat interesting question. At some point, there was a musician or group of musicians who employed people to set up, maintain, and monitor their equipment rather than do it themselves or rely on employees of the venue. I was wondering how this got started.

From reading Phil's book, the Grateful Dead were employing a huge crew early on.

That IS hard to definitely answer, but I do know that Neil Aspinall is credited as the Beatles first road manager (before "Roadie" was an official term) circa 1961, followed by Mal Evans a couple of years later when Neil moved up into management.

Both lugged gear around in vans, setting up and tearing down for the Beatles, later writing and telling their many tales of road mayhem in various publications and interviews

Neil passed away earlier this year and Mal died in 1976.

Generally:
- 4 busses (2 band, 2 crew)... 3 semi-trucks (1 lights, 1 sound, and 1 backline [band gear] / staging)... and a "live recording" vehicle

- seven band members
- band manager (Bert)
- tour manager (Kirk)
- tour accountant (Shelley)
- Gregory's personal assistant (Chank)
- 1 production manager (Vid)
- 3 backline techs (Jaimie, Brian, and me, Daved)
- 2 sound engineers (Bruce & Earl M.)
- 2 sound system technicians
- 1 light director (Earl F.)
- 2 light system technicians
- 2 liquid light engineers (Chris & Peter)
- 1 merchandiser
- 2 "Live recording" engineers
- 4 bus drivers
- 3 semi-truck drivers

This is pretty much the 'everyday' entourage. It fluctuates depending upon the gigs, the routing, the production, etc.

I hope I haven't forgotten anyone....
