Susan Joy Love, a native of Newark, Ohio, died in Sandy Springs, Ga., at the age of 86 on July 26, 2008. She had three sons, all graduates of Auburn University and veterans of the USMC.

An interesting note: She was married at the start of WWII to a man named Ellsworth Kelley. On August 31, 1944, he went on a B-24 mission and never returned. When the war ended, the prison camps were checked, and he was declared dead in early 1946. She married my dad a year later, and had three kids. My dad, a USMC veteran of WWII, enlisted in the Army, and moved the family around the world until he medically retired. He died in Jan. 1993. Three years later, Bill Clinton was visiting China. While he was there, he was given remains and dogtags that were found in a remote area of China, including Kelley. Trips to China found additional remains. (The Discovery Channel and 20/20 did specials on this story about 10 years ago.) When the remains were interred in Arlington, she was not invited, but a niece, who was not born when Kelley was alive, was invited. I got in touch with a senator who contact the Department of the Army, which paid for her trip.

Brian, a very poignant story on many levels. Your Mom certainly was a member of the "Greatest Generation" and she endured an incredible sacrifice. But you and your brothers are here as a result of it.

I am sorry about your Mom.
