Set for release this fall:

http://www.abstractlogix.com/news_view.php?idno=284

"Joining Jimmy Herring on his album are Jeff Sipe on drums,
Oteil Burbridge on bass, Kofi Burbridge on keyboards and
Greg Osby on saxophone."

I believe Matt Slocum, from Oteil & the Peacemakers, is also contributing. should be interesting....

Nice it's official now! Didn't know it was slated to be a Jimmy record...early talk was Derek would be involved as well.

I would be suprised if Derek doesn't contribute. Unless It is a scheduling issue?

sounds great !

I've heard a little of the roughs with Rush Anderson (who's engineering/mixing it)--it's a monster. It's pretty jaw-dropping.

I read an interview w/ Bobby Lee Rodgers and it appears that he helped Jimmy with some of the songwriting.

quote:
Bobby became good friends with Oteil and played with him, Col., Jeff Sipe and Jimmy Herring on some Aquarium Rescue Unit reunion dates. "Playing with ARU was amazing," he says. "I went to the University of Georgia and used to go to ARU shows, and I just knew I was supposed to be in that band. To become friends with those guys and have them allow me to be a part of it...was amazing."

Rodgers and Herring also found a very unique friendship outside of ARU. Jimmy is the godfather to Bobby's child, and the two musicians talk all the time about life with the Col. and many other shared experiences. During down time, Jimmy and Bobby put together a project, along with Sipe. Herring, Rodgers, and Sipe was a short-lived project, but one that was a natural fit for the talented musicians and friends.

Bobby says, "Jimmy came to me and said, 'Man I got this gig with Panic' and I (told him) go do what you need to do. Both of us know we don't need each other. We just care about each other and we will probably do a ton of work together in the future."

In fact, Herring is playing on Bobby's newest record, which is currently being recorded. And Bobby may be helping Jimmy with his first real effort as a songwriter.

"It is so crazy," Bobby says, "because (Jimmy) has always admired songwriters, but he has always been working, helping others to realize their visions better than anyone else out there. He just raises these bands to incredible levels. He wonders 'Why can't I write,' and I tell him 'Just write, man.'

"I talked to him over the last few months and he is just so on it. I can't even get him on the phone. When I get him he says, 'Man I've been writing, and coming up with all of these new voicings.' So I am so excited for him."

Great news. I hope Jimmy's solo record is ... ahem ... a little more structured than Lincoln Memorial was. While I can certainly appreciate the musical talent and ability that it takes to make a record like that, LM was just about "too" out there.

Lincon Memorial and the first project z album are entirely improvised. they then cut in the studio, just like one would do with a movie, to make tracks for the album. I would assume that effort would be a little more contained (less out) than project z. as there will be songs. my guess would be that this cd will be similar to Herring, Lavitz, Hayward, Gradney's Endangered Species (2001)

a_shell

Endangerd Species was a great record! While the first Project Z record may have been improvised, it at least contained some quite beautiful melodies and ideas. I actually saw Project Z live w/ the Rev Oliver Wells. They were quite incredible! In the Col. Bruce ARU days wasn't there a catch phrase, "Sing a song, Jimmy?" Lol!

I had a wonderful conversation with Jimmy yesterday for an article about the new CD for the next issue of Hittin' the Note magazine. Jimmy was as gracious as he always is and had lots of interesting things to say about playing with Derek, joining Widespread Panic and other topics of interest. I can't wait to write it up!

Just thought some of you on this Forum might want to know

Thanks Rob. They say Jimmy has found his home with Panic. My opinion is that he would have been right at home in dTb- permanently. He & Derek push each other to the limits every time. I hope your article delves deeper in to this topic than has been previously discussed elsewhere.

I am looking forward to the new album~!

Only mid way through my second listen to this disc. Oozes musicanship. Like some people describe wine: mid 70's ECM nose, some heavy Jeff Beckish notes, Weather Report texture, and hints of Pat Methney's 80/81 at the finish.

Ahh screw it you either like the wine or don't like the wine. I really like this disc.

i agree this disc is great, and like wine it seems to get better as you consume. too bad derek wasn't allowed to be on the entire disc. the songs he is on are great. he and jimmy are awesome together. hopefully sometime in the future they will have sometime to put something together with the both of them (maybe add jeff sipe on drums).
