It's a sad story with what is going on down there. They are part of the USA. All hands on deck with whatever resources available. I know people with family down there that are still without basic needs.
I work as a vendor to a big box store. They are always beating us down for more money by running discounts and coupons, etc., that we have to pay for. I'm told they do this to all of their vendors. I want the USA to do the same with their contractors.
When the basic necessities are met, why can't the USA lean on all of those large companies that are awarded large government contracts worth billions of dollars, to go down there and rebuild for less that normal costs. After all, they have been living large all of these years for doing work for the USA. Companies like Hallaburton, GE, Raytheon to name a few. I think these government contracted companies owe us.
Trump says he builds things, well rebuild Puerto Rico.
I know it's pretty naive of me to think that this could happen.

In other words, f*ck Puerto Rico.

Why not offer to fly in Puerto Ricans who can't find jobs here and let them help with disaster efforts and maybe pay them something for their efforts? They can visit their homeland, be useful and make some money. The military is supervising the recovery efforts, they can organize them. How many unemployed drivers are there in the US? Fly 'em down and let them drive the trucks. How many unemployed construction, and/or veterans with skills are there that might want to help if they were given the chance? Use the people who can help. That's the answer. How to get all of them there? Fly them in OR

Let at least one of Cruise Lines sail them down there. Boats leave every day from Miami , with high paying vacationers, let them set aside a boat of two and send down 5,000 people to help out. And feed them on the way, and while they are there. They have the food, they have the kitchens, and they have the rooms to let them use to rest during their stay. Why has no one else thought of this?

Nope, helping them is dumb. Because it is all their fault. No reason to help anyone if they brought it on themselves.

By this logic, we could probably save US taxpayers a lot of money by eliminating first responder services to people who got themselves in trouble.

That line of reasoning could even put the Savior Himself out of a job.

Screw you Mulesnot.

Clearly the best way to help Puerto Rico is to insult them for not helping themselves. If they weren't so dumb they wouldn't be on an island, surrounded by water, big water, ocean water. It takes a lot of guts for them to ask for help, especially while the president is golfing for the weekend. Very rude.

Totally get your point. If only PR hadn't rejected statehood, they'd be getting the same immediate (NOT), unlimited (NOT) support that TX, LA, and FL did w/o drawing twitter fire from the Oval Office. They deserve all the tragedy they're suffering.

My strongest memory of Haiti is that a Hollywood director (Sean Penn and yes, I know he's hated by many) was the one to set the example of how to get things done. A director's job is to organize, move, feed, and supply large groups of people/extras/cast and equipment over many locations in sometimes harrowing conditions with an average budget of $16 million. One single person & modest privately raised funds vs. the host of experts & $$$ of the US/UN. He was on the ground running camps with local labor.

My mother-in-law who lives in PR appreciates your insight and compassion.

Does everyone see how foolish the San Juan mayor looks beetching about lack of US response standing behind a hanger full of relief effort.

You are aware that the Hurricane Maria, the most destructive hurricane in Puerto Rico in nearly a century, hit nearly 2 weeks ago, right?

Meanwhile this was what the Mayor was up to.

While Trump belittled both her, and the Hurricane for not killing more people, simply because he wasn't praised enough. I've been through several hurricanes and even minor ones need immediate response, not to be showered in shame.

Agreed. People don't see where the money comes from. Everyone is all for rebuilding; we'll see how many offer up $300 per person (get the 100 billion needed for debt relief and some infrastructure rebuilding)

You really would benefit by expanding your perspectives. The gravity of PR goes way way beyond a picture of some supplies with the mayor.
