Let me preface by saying; I'm a Warren Head. Right now grooving to Mule at MJ from last summer. But I have encountered so many Warren haters, and to be honest it pisses me off. Usually this happens at Phil or Dead related events, but also (albeit to a lesser extent at ABB shows). The disses against him vary; no origional licks, too many covers, takes over shows into Warren and friends, blah blah, etc etc. I don't want to use hyperbole or be cheesy, but it pisses me off when a dude I follow around the country and consider a guiding musical light is trashed like that, I mean this **** is religion. Personaly I think guitar wise, Haynes has his own recognizeable sound. I would say he is a brilliant lyricist and one of the best singers our country has ever had.....thoughts?

Warren is a great guitar player, great singer, great songwriter ,great guy, and great bandmate. If he weren't, he wouldn't be involved in so many projects. I think he is one of the few guys that could step onto the stage with anyone & fit right in. He's very gracious on & offstage.

Reminds me of the scene from Godfather 3 when Joey says to Michael Corleone when confronted about whether someone has been bad mouthing Michael, " Its true, if anyone would say such a thing they would be a dog". Anyone saying this about Warren just has no knowledge or class.

From Kevin Kinney.

From The Desk Of Kevn Kinney: Warren Haynes
April 1, 2012

Kevn Kinney‘s music has always been lurking in the cobwebbed corners of your mind, even if you weren’t aware of it. After making the big move from Milwaukee to Atlanta back in the ’80s, he happened to be close to Athens, Ga., the birthplace of R.E.M., when that band was really catching fire. He caught the always-open ear of Peter Buck, who produced some material by Kinney’s band, Drivin N Cryin, which would latch onto a support slot for an R.E.M. tour. Fast forward to the new millennium, and Kinney has moved to Brooklyn, where he’s cut a fine solo record, A Good Country Mile, with Anton Fier and the Golden Palominos. The new disc somehow manages to fit Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Van Morrison under the same tiny leopard-skin pill-box hat. Kinney will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with him.

Kinney: I think Warren Haynes is not only one of the best guitarists I have ever
heard, but one of the greatest singers as well …
One of the kindest souls I have ever known, singin’ the devil’s blues …
I shudder ever time I see a copy of a magazine with the hundred best
guitarists and he’s not in it!
His Warren Hayne’s Christmas Jam, held every year in an arena in
Ashville, N.C., is an amazing flashback to a bygone era …
No reserved tickets, just general admission jamming, sometimes til three in
the morning!!
The Allman Brothers with John Paul Jones doing
Zeppelin! Are you freaking kidding me!?
Not a lot of arena shows do that anymore … and with that, they have
raised more than a million dollars over the past 20-plus years to benefit
Habitat For Humanity…
Warren also produced and played on a record of mine in the late
nineties … The Flower And The Knife.
A beautiful album if I do say so myself … Recorded in three days at Water
Studios in Hoboken …
Watch out though … He can make you cry with that damn thing ….
His journey through music and his stories of his years in Nashville or on
the road with the Allman Brothers or Govt’ Mule are always hilarious and
inspiring …
He has never had anything but a kind word for me …
If you ever wondered if there is such a thing as a gift from God …
Go see Warren Haynes and stand in the front row …
Gotta go home now, and practice!
Love on top of the world

I am a huge Warren fan. He appears to be so gracious to every other musician on stage, absolutely no ego on his part. I've run into him a couple of times, at an airport and a restaurant and did that fan thing of "can I take your picture" and saying something not-so-clever like "I love your music" (real original) and every time he smiles kindly and says thanks for coming to the shows, as if we fans are doing him a big favor. And on top of all that - the benefit for Habitat for Humanity? They guy is unbelievable. I live in NYC, so see famous people semi-regularly, but he's the only one I get flustered around.

I've never heard anyone say anything negative about him, sure hope it stays that way.

"To get to the point, imo, it's mostly certain Dead Heads who are overly critical and unreceptive to his abilities as a musician."

Yes it is!

And I find that alot of them never even saw Jerry play live. Just because you've seen Furthur two dozen times doesn't make you an expert on the Dead's music. It's great that they've found the music and it moves them.

I saw Jerry well over 200 times and I've seen Warren somewhere around 100 times. Everytime I see so-called Dead Heads bad mouthing Warren I just shake my head and laugh. If Warren is so bad why has he played with so many other musicians and why would these musicians donate their time and play for free at the X-Mas Jams?

On another note a couple of weeks ago a friend posted on fb about a Dead show 21 years ago. By the end of the night it turned out that seven people I've met through Gov't Mule's music were also at that show and six of them were also at the last two Island Exodus trips.

I think Warren haters have no musical taste. I love Warren's guitar playing more than anyone else's in the world and I prefer his playing to Derek's. If given a choice I will take Warren every time.

If you don't dig Warren, that's your musical loss.

Just the opposite here, I will travel miles upon miles to hear Derek play.....Love Warren also, but in the case of the ABB...too much Mr. Haynes, not enough Gregg.

Within the original musical context of Duane 's ABB, Warren is, IMHO the Man among Men. I love Derek, He is great it DTB, better IMHO in TTB, but with a pure what I grew up listening to ABB bias, I'm with Doug. Warren is just the consumate, all around, guitar playing, singing, talented yet non-egotistical glue that holds our Brothers together. He is a Man among Men. Also is a pretty good writer. This represents only my humble .02 opinion.

Having said that, I go see Derek every opportunity I get. Which was 3 of the last 4 events I've attended.

Eff them!!!! I experienced some of that from the DSO fans at Mountain Jam a couple years ago when everywhere I moved during Mule's show which preceded a late night DSO show I had to deal with loud obnoxious complaining DSO fans saying that Warren was an attention whore and why does he have to play with every band and why does Gov't Mule play two nights and I hope he doesn't sit in with Dark Star Orchestra??? It was friggin' maddening to hear these idiots complain about Warren that way at a festival that he set up and put on. I had to remiand a few of them that none of the musicians in DSO which is by the way a tribute band could even wipe the fanny of Warren Haynes and that he can come out and play for as long as he wants with whoever he wants when invited by whatever band!!!

Sucks being so damned good that everyone wants Warren to sit in and play with them. Whoever don't like it just need to either stay home or suck it up and shut their friggin' complaining mouths and let everyone else enjoy the magic of Mr. Warren Haynes!!! That is my two cents!!!

Any ABB fan owes a massive debt to this guy. I give him credit for really being the driving force behind the band for the past 20+ years. Am I wrong?

No your not. Warren is a great guitar player and the "musical director", so to speak, of the Brothers.

Those Deadheads probably dislike him because he doesn't play in a meandering & noodling kind of way . Warren Rules!

I haven't really noticed deadheads saying this about Warren Haynes except for a few posts I've seen on other sites; but if they don't like Warren they shouldn't go to Mule/ABB shows and leave tickets for people who actually like Warren's playing and singing.

Warren is a damn fine guitar player, but to me he's the least talented guitar player of all the guitarists who have ever been in the line up. Go ahead, spank me but I'm sure there are plenty others who agree with me.

Sorry, not into the spanking thing and even if one agrees with you, and I don't, that's still a pretty damn good list to be at the bottom of.

For me, the remarkable thing about Derek and Warren both is their generosity on stage and their ability to play with anyone. With Warren it's been said, and I believe it to be true, that he can make anyone better when he plays with them.

As evidence, check out this clip of him playing with Coheed & Cambria a few years ago. Not normally a group I'd listen to, but I really enjoy this video for what Warren brings to it and for the way he's recieved by an audience where most probably don't even know him.

Wow, that was fun to watch. Thanks for posting this! Come to think of it when i saw Warren guesting on 2 songs with Coheed & Cambria at WH X-Mas Jam 2008 i guess it was the other way around. When introduced the band got a massive roar from the Asheville crowd but i guess a lot of people there didn't know them. Hat's off to Warren to being so open minded and versatile.
