Has anyone ever used Duane's bird chirps? I don't remember hearing them anywhere else.

You hear it on Layla, live dreams, L.skynard on the live version of free bird.
Me personally have used it in my band when covering Dreams. You slide over the bridge pick up and at some point notes become very high.

Duane made those bird sounds by taking the slide off his finger and rocking the lip of the bottle against the strings up very high past the fretboard, over the pickups. As far as I know he invented that technique. Here's a good pic of him doing some:

Interesting as well was that Duane seemed to segue into slide guitar while in standard tuning. There are so few (if any) clips out there where you can actually see his hands while he is manipulating the glass....So, if you've grown up trying to emulate his sound, you have to create your own visual, your own little memory of how the slide impacts the strings. It will influence how I hear (visualize) Duane's slide work on "Mountain Jam" in the future....

I've read that Duane first learned to play bottleneck in standard tuning and soon after moved on to open....As did I. That being said, I hardly ever, if never play slide in standard anymore so your chops,...fade. My guess is that the first time he did it on "MJ" it was not planned, just reached for the slide, used it for a bit, liked it and kept doing it on that tune..Does anyone know of another tune where he plays slide in Standard?.....Perhaps on the studio cut of "Trouble no more"?

Billastro, I'll pm you with links to the files, there's 2 of them, from 2 different cameras, but the birdcall can only be seen on the one - they are kind of out-takes from the Love Valley DVD, this short birdcall section uses the only SBD bits that us small people have access too - the DVD used the audience recordings.

BigV, wasn't Dreams in standard also ? Also, watching this clip - notice how little right hand muting he is doing (or appears to be doing) in those standard tuning lines. In standard I usually have to have all the other non sounding strings shut down !

Dreams is definitely also done in standard tuning. And yes, I believe the studio version of TNM as well.

Mountain Jam
Trouble No More (studio)
Dreams

Layla

I think maybe the early version of Melissa on the album billed as "Duane & Gregg Allman".

Road of Love maybe?

Here's Santana at the VH1 HoF from 1998, I think.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIMrU8qcbs8 Around 7 minutes he does a pretty good, but short, rendition of the bird songs in "Black Magic Woman" with Peter Green (who wrote the song for Fleetwood Mac way back when they were a good blues band)

If I remember correctly you can also hear the chirps on "Finding Her" on the Boz Scaggs lp in 1969.

Duane Allman, nothing like it.
