wow,sum people really need to lighten up a bit here.Obviously I don't think that..but u know, having seen the full Allman Bros Band w/ Dickey,Duane,Berry,I just thought it would've been cool If Dickey (dickie) played 1 last gig with them.Provided that Greg was ok w/ it & it would've given the fans s/thing to get excited about,w/greg sick.Obviously a certain # of fans were pissed w/greg not performing,& Susan sitting in,& Kofi,etc...but maybe a certain % get pissed about any little thing anyway.Maybe I'm naive, but I do remember the feel of how it used to be with Brothers shows;family, sharing & about the music. But Duane may have inspired that back then.Thats probably a bit of what TTB's attempting to put out there in their shows now,but maybe its just a different time. |

Great quote from Gregg in the Alan Paul book "One Way Out" regarding the rumors that Eric Clapton would be joining the band after Duane's passing:
"We already have a guitar player that can play circles around Eric Clapton. His name is Dickey Betts".

wow betty, a polarizing musician in NY ???? .He plays a bar in long island,my neighbor bartends at . that many up coming and or past there prime bands play for a check and dickey cant even sell those out .I went 4 years ago ,and never again. Last year like years before he was average for the first 4 songs ,he argued with his band he was drunk ,and acted like he was doing a favor playing in this small club . $25 tickets with a free drink . And that's about all hes worth . Dickey had a good run that ended 20 years ago .The NY music scene is far from polarized by Betts ,sorry girl but GET A GRIP . |

Duane said something almost identical, as quoted from Please Be With Me. In talking to Joe Dan Petty after the Layla sessions, Duane said, "I'll tell you one thing. Clapton's got nothing on Dickey Betts." ____________________ "I know y'all came to hear our songs, we like to play 'em for you but without Gregg here it's really hard for us to do. He sings & plays so much & does such a good job. He's really sick, 103* He might've come, but no one would let him." Duane |

That may very well have been true on some days in 1971.

No doubt and oh, so true. 43 years ago, there were not too many guitar players better than Mr. Betts...But father time waits for no one and you can count me amongst those who feel Dickey would just have a bigger crowd to play badly in front of. Add, the Betts "apologists" here crack me up.... How anybody can listen to the present day recordings of DB&GS and truthfully say and believe he could play with Warren and Derek, just might be higher than most in the crowd at the Beacon. Funny how a group of peeps can all listen to the same thing and yet manage to hear entirely different levels of competency. ____________________

Blasphemous as this might come across, I always thought Clapton was overrated. Larry Campbell and Richard Thompson, for example, are better all-around guitarists. |

After all these years on the site, it amazes me reading about "Greg" & "Dickie". Maybe Greg & Dickie will be forming a band.
Also in the band---Jay-moe, mark, and Derrick.... |

I have been one of Dickey's bigger critics on this site over the past few years, but I have to say (OK write)... that the recently changed thread title here is just uncalled for and borderline A**hole. ____________________

Haha, good one! That ship sailed over 20 yrs ago though.
I thought the posts were quite coherent actually.I had adjusted the earlier post to accommodate a few critical remarks on spelling,Betts drunkeness, people not wanting him onstage w/ABB here,Betts playing, etc, etc.I originally thought adding him might help to salvage the Beacon Run instead of postponing or cancellation for the fans...Tried to keep things upbeat.I've never posted on any message bd before..I was just trying to be constructive & upbeat but maybe not the place for it.Looking forward to ABB at festival circuit fully healthy again for their final run.Glad Gregg's better and playing Wanee. |

Well I apologize for even posting in this thread. As a new poster you should have been treated with more courtesy and whether or not this subject has been beaten to death long before you came around is no excuse for people calling you names and I include my own responses here. It is not the way the board's founder would have wished you to be treated and you obviously have great love for the band and music so I again am sorry for my posts. |

K,thanks for that.
One thing about NYers though... usually don't hold too much back(which is good & bad sometimes). The audiences are always great! I didn't know this "Dickey" subject had been beaten to death previously!! Had I known I certainly wouldn't have mentioned him.I just thought it would've been nice to see him 1 last time w/ABB like old times & thought it was possible.
