Grateful Dead Back Together for Obama

Barack Obama’s run for the presidency has launched many different grassroots campaigns. The most interesting may be the revival of the Grateful Dead.

I am told that on Oct. 13, possibly either in Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, the Dead will get back together for at least one show to raise money for and awareness about Obama.

All four living original members will play together — Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. The band's leader, Jerry Garcia, died in 1995 from a heart attack.

Substituting for Garcia will be Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule master musician Warren Haynes.

If all goes well, my sources say, the band will then set out on a major tour in summer 2009.

The Dead, you know, were always ahead of their time. Long before Napster or iTunes or Limewire, the Dead let their fans tape shows for free and trade them back and forth.

Early in the game, the group decided its money would come from live shows and not record sales. They were probably the least disappointed of many modern acts when the bottom dropped out of CD sales because of downloading.

A Dead tour next summer is good news indeed. As for Warren preaching to the choir? Whatever.

Cool for Deadheads and Obama-ites, but if Warren tours with the Dead next Summer, where does that leave the ABB 40th?

Could this mean a double bill with the ABB/Dead? I am all in for that and it would make perfect sense. Let Warren do a double bill and swap headlining bands. they need to let Warren have a more prominant role in the Dead if they are going to let him in the band. The did not use him to the best of his ability on the last tour he went on with them. They need to cut loose and let Warren take over Jerry's role. I would love to see it!

Same as when Warren toured with Phil & Friends. A month w/ Phil. a month w/ ABB. If you're lucky you get a show w/ both but given the Dead's penchant for musical exploration AND the vast egos of the four members, I'm guessing they'll all be 'An Even With" like last time.

And how is our little Stalinist today? Nothing mean to say about Warren and his political views. Very uncharacteristic of you.

Stalinist? You've got me mixed up with our left-of-center friends.

I've already reserved tickets to a 'Mule show in November AFTER the election. I never miss them.

I've never seen Warren come out and bash the right. Have you?

Are you being sarcastic??? I have seen and heard Warren bash the Bush administration on more than one occasion at shows.

Until last night Obama never really critiqued the right either and that didn't hold you back.

Opposing points of view are a real problem for you, aren't they?

I actually have but in a very subdued limited and low key way. He certainly has not turned his shows into a political platform and I sure hope he doesn't because he is not that kind of musician and never has been, even though many of his songs flirt with the political and with social injustice.

no

last time I saw them with Warren, Warren opened. (Nissan)

before that it was Steve Winwood. (Merriweather)

or maybe the other way round. but definitely was not "An evening with"

But the real question is who does ABB support?

It's really stupid that it's political, as if Obama is some saviour or like he'll actually change things but it's sad how this band is now political when they never were when Jerry Garcia was around.

I now see that musicians have bought into Obama's empty lies and BS. I'm not saying that McCain is any better but Obama is just an empty suit and he won't do **** t and he'll just press the pause button on the downward spiral and raise taxes, inflation, and the standard of living
even higher than it is now.

The original grateful dead were NEVER political at all, at least not for presidential
elections, or backing candidates even Jerry Brown.
