I was very worried about this when we were talking about the Carrier situation I said that Carrier could not be a one-off and that somebody in the administration would have to be aware of the many companies from coast-to-coast that were considering outsourcing their work and that action would be needed in those cases to persuade (if possible) the companies to reconsider.

It is very disappointing that more has not been done at a place like Rexnord, at least attempted.

Regarding NAFTA I'm hopeful that it can be more beneficial to the US worker. It's a tough line to walk, you want US companies to experience sales and profit growth and you want them to be competitive with their foreign counterparts, but at the same time you want US job growth, security and wage and benefits to increase.

I have always believed that it must start with a tariff that penalizes foreign goods that undercut US produced goods. These companies, it isn't always they outsource because they are greedy SOBs and just want more profit for management and ownership. Sometimes they do so out of necessity, sometimes it is either they outsource production or they go out of business - so you in their shoes what would you do? So the underlying conditions that make up the decision process is what needs addressed.

I'm not going to get ahead of the renegotiation of NAFTA and say it won't matter or it will matter. All three countries want it updated and improved from their own perspectives. What the end result looks like is anyone's guess. Will it be what my ideal outcome would be, doubtful, but that doesn't mean I'm going to doom and gloom it from the start. We'll have to see what it looks like.
