PETA wants a memorial sign posted for the 30 cows killed in a truck accident in Kansas City, Kansas

Posted by Justin Kendall on Wed, May 30, 2012 at 4:00 PM

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent the above image to The Pitch today. The sign is a memorial for the 30 cows killed when a transport truck crashed through a guardrail on Interstate 70, careened down an embankment and landed on 118th Street in Kansas City, Kansas, on April 26. The cattle were en route to slaughter.

PETA is asking the Kansas Department of Transportation to put up the memorial sign at the crash scene. The animal-rights organization says the sign reminds truck "drivers of their responsibility to the thousands of animals they haul to their deaths every day."

"It's tragic enough that cows will end up in slaughterhouses, where their throats will be slit and some of them will be skinned alive," PETA Vice President Dan Mathews said in a statement. "PETA's sign will remind truck drivers that the least that we can do for these animals is to take care to save them from plunging off of an overpass to a bloody, drawn-out death on the pavement below."

I left a message with the Kansas DOT. I'll update when I hear back.

UPDATE: "We don't post fatality signs for anyone - animal or human," says Steve Swartz, KDOT's public information officer.

Swartz says individuals can put up roadside memorials (and the state has a few guidelines), but the state doesn't put up memorial signs.

"The state doesn't have any such program to mark the spot of a fatality," Swartz says.

The closest thing: Highways can be adopted, but adopters have to clean their highways.

Roadside memorials for people (much less cows!) are bizarre to me. Why don't they honor the departed at the cemetery like everyone else?

I do not suport or undestand militant, radical groups like PETA.
YES, Peoole should treat animals ethically.
Food source, medical and lcothing.
No crazy expeirmetns by made scientist.
No slaughter for the sake of slaugther.
Hunting for food, fine. For a trophy, no or hunting from shooting from a helicopter or shooting unedible animals for sport and endangered animals for sport,no..
A mink coat, fine.
Minks make good fur , but not good food. They are raised for fur.

Then you have these celebs like Pamalea ANderson. Hyporcrites.
Umm, her palstic silicone or saline boobs she has had inserted to bgigger and taken out and inserted again, umm, this was done on some lab trats, mice,m and maybe rabbits first.
Make-up, animals stested first. Her leather seats in her Mercedes, Bently, Jaquar,or Rolls,, Vette, Ferrai, whateer fancy, expensive car she drives has finest quality seats in animals skins. Pammy is not driving a cheap Seria truck like me.
Does she have some of the Louboutin , Manolo, Jimmy Choo shoes and handbags? These are not of man-made plastic and leather like the shoes you find at Payless.
If her precious sons get sick,a cold, nothing much, thank God, umm,you bet she does not hesitiate in taking them to the best doctors where they recieve the best care and if they need meds, the best meds, ummm, animal tested first.

Maybe we should put a sign up in front of their shelter.

I wouldn't mind a taste!

The Problem I have with PETA is their hypocrisy.

They claim to follow utilitarianism and specifically the Work of Philosopher Pete Singer to justify rights for animals. I have no problem with this. Singer used Utilitarianism to justify equal rights for animals and he makes a compelling argument. The argument is basically that there is nothing intrinsically unique about humans that make humans superior. Mark Twain actually argued Animals are superior to humans in his essay "Was Earth Made for Man" And I can see Twain's point also.

Utilitarianism also says that the moral choice is the one that does the least amount of harm compared to the good it does. This philosophy appeals to me.

But PETA are inconsistent. If that philosophy calls for the killing of one animal to save one more valuable or rare, then they put on their Pig costumes and protest. They protested the Nature Conservancy for trapping feral pigs that were destroying fragile ecosystems that several rare species depended on. And property that the Conservancy has a big investment in.

Utilitarianism would justify the trapping of those pigs. pets set free when they got too big.

But PETA would rather protest and draw attention to themselves rather than engage in serious discourse about any problem. It also seems they only cling to utilitarianism when it suits their point of view. They shutdown a major road that led to the Key Bridge in DC and seriously disrupted traffic
to gain attention to their POV. For which they had no moral justification to do.

Hypocrisy

PETA has a good premise in that we shouldn't mistreat animals but when they do crazy stuff like this it undoes the good ideas they have.
