I have been looking for an organist to join my band and have had no luck.
Where did they all go to? There were so many back in the day and now there seem to be none.
Yet another reason to appreciate Gregg Allman!

Hey now Tinsley -

Have you spoken to Kevin Thomas? He plays B-3 as well as anyone I've ever heard!

And how about Tom Grose or Ike Stubblefield? They are both Atlanta players not in a regular gig, if maybe not looking for one right now ...

See you at the Variety on the 29th!

Hurry up Mitzi, you better sneak in a few bars of The Battle Hymn of the Vaylorettes and Going Down Slow before Hop fixes T up permanently...

Seriously folks, where have all the organists gone? Remember 3 Dog Night's version of "Easy to be Hard?" Now, that was one oustanding organist...

On a side note, the DTB played the historical Palace Theater in downtown Hilo, Hawaii last nite. Un-real, out of this world. Joined by opening act, Papa Mali that hails from Shreveport, Louisiana, and special guest---and one good looking AND cool lady on top of that---Mrs. Derek Trucks. That's right, Susan! Mahalo DTB, for sharing your music!

Hophead beat me to it! Anybody who could get Ike Stubblefield in their band would be well advised to do so. He's a well-respected session player, but it's criminal that he isn't better known.

The best organ player I've ever seen, bar none. Anybody who thinks the organ is a lost art hasn't heard Ike play, he is a true old school master of the instrument.

I like Ike!

That dude Rev. Oliver Wells is a killer B-3 player. I haven't heard Ike Stubblefield, but ... if y'all think he is better than Wells ... the he must be good. Unfortunately Tinsley in addition to premium pay, who's going to tote and set up the B-3? Damn those things are a bitch to carry!

Hey Tinsley,

You might want to check out Tommy Lepson (he's up in DC). He's got a band, but doesn't appear they're doing much lately. Killer player, too.

Well, if you could get either of these guys to relocate, you'd have a GREAT Hammond-centric keyboardist:

Paul Kallestad (Fargo, ND); formerly with Walter Trout's band
Wayne Hammerly (in So Cal); one time Three Dog Night keyboardist

The voice of the Hammond has a special place in my musical Soul. Back in the late 60's,at about 12 or so, I was sent back to visit an Aunt in Savannah, Ga. for the summer/fall. My Aunt and Uncle also had some summer digs in Bluffton, S.C... Well, one Sunday morning my cousin wakes me up and says, "get up and get dressed, we're going to church"...so I get up do my thing and find that my Aunt, Uncle, Cousin and myself are walkiing down a dirt road in Bluffton, S.C. We are walking along the May river and after I can't remember how long, I started to hear Music. Singing, Clapping and stomping like I had never heard before. Gospel music. Lord have mercy. My Aunt had packed some juice and some biscuits and the four of us proceeded to get just close enough to the old white washed steeple roofed church to be able to hear and appreciate without intruding.
See this was the late 60's, in the Deep South...and this was a Black congregation. So we sat and we listened. I still can't believe we all just sat there and ..listened. I was mezmorized. No one had to ask me to be quiet. No one spoke, there we sat, our own little church service. When it was over and we were headed back to the House, I remember asking my Uncle Billly about the new sound. "The Hammond Organ" he said. "We'll have to buy this young man here a Jimmy Smith Record next time we're in town"...

Check out Jimmy Smith

Also check out Dr Lonnie Smith live!
I have seen him live and its incredible.
I heard him do Willow Weep For Me at an evening show at the last 2 jazz fest in new orleans.
This guy is amazing!

Also as mentioned above buy any Jimmy Smith record!

When someone asked me my favorite AUD recordings of the ABB, I say t he ones that Gregg's organ is way up in the mix. Hey what else could matter !

I put in a good word for George Wood, also. George is a busy guy lately (as an OTR driver) but it would be cool to see him play with someone like TE.
