From what I've read and watched, LS definitely outperformed the Stones. LS at some of its finest.

Who would have wanted to follow Skynyrd in 1976? Goodness they were red hot. There was no shame in being outplayed by them once Steve Gaines joined the band.

Definitely. He took LS to a whole new level.

The Stones had added Ron Wood and LS added Gaines. I will take Gaines every time.

Steve was so good. Love his playing and his style. I just hope future generations appreciate his musicianship.

Just played LS Knebworth a couple of weeks ago. That has to be one of their best shows in the trading pool. Excellent sound/Excellent show.

You can imagine Ronnie and Steve would have come up with some great stuff had their lives not ended in 1977.

Actually one of the best live Skynyrd shows was 75 Cardiff, Wales that was traded for years. It was released as an official bootleg a few years ago. This was just Collins and Rossington blazing away, the same lineup that appears on The Whistle Test. Ed King and Steve Gaines are/were great players, but donít take anything away from the principals. Iíve seen Rossington play many times with the current lineup. He still smokes. Witness Skynyrd Prnounced and Second Helping Live From Jacksonville.

Agreed, agreed. The Stones had released "Black & Blue," which is just OK. Keith was not in great shape, and Ronnie Wood is not Mick Taylor. I love the Stones, but I'm sure Skynyrd in 1976 ate them alive.

Not taking anything away from the original guys but as with any team - add exceptional talent and it puts it over the top.

From a skill level, Steve Gaines is a completely different beast than the others. No knock on them but his knowledge of theory and finger skills put him on a different level.

Somewhere I have a Steve Gaines solo CD from the mid 70s. I bought it at a used music shop on Michigan State's campus when I was in grad school years ago. This won't sound nice because I know how great he was but this CD bored me to tears. I think it's called One in the Sun or something like that.

Give it to Get It and Nothing Is New are two very good tracks from One In The Sun otherwise you are right.

Definitely not a solo artist - at least not then - but the album does have signs of what is to come.

Skynyrd was the real deal. I love Ed King. Gary, Allen, Ed, & even Billy (Powell on piano) were masters of the fill. Sweet little licks in between the lines were always tasteful and never overplayed. Here's the Winterland show, Absolutely beautiful.....
