http://ultimateclassicrock.com/chrissie-hynde-cellphone-pretenders-show/
Trying to reverse the proliferation of glowing cellphone screens in the audience at today's concerts is like trying to push back against the tide — but Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde isn't going down without a fight, even if it means cutting a show short after profanely berating the crowd.
The band's no-phones policy isn't exactly a secret — and it's clearly stated on signs at venues hosting Pretenders shows — but the concertgoer who can sit in the audience for an entire set without hoisting his or her phone into the air is pretty rare these days, and during the Pretenders' Oct. 26 visit to the Irish Village in Dubai, Hynde had enough.
As The Independent Reports, the conflict between Hynde and the cellphone toters in the crowd started in the midst of the band's first song of the night, and flared up often through what turned out to be a shortened 45-minute set. Finally, after repeatedly and angrily urging the audience to put their phones away, she issued an ultimatum.
"She said, 'If you keep using your phones, then I’m not singing and you can listen to us playing,'" one audience member told the paper. "And so she stopped singing and at the end of that particular song, she said ‘Well, take a [expletive] picture of this’ and she and the band walked off stage."
The Independent rounded up appalled reactions from a number of concertgoers who felt, in the words of one angry fan, "We pay for you, you don't pay for us. You are there for us, we are not there for you." But Hynde's no stranger to fighting for what she believes in, and as she made clear in a recent Facebook post, anyone expecting her to dial back the intensity at this stage is bound to have their hopes dashed.
"I know sometimes I’m not the celebrity you want," she wrote. "But believe me, I suffer for it later that night and wish I could have been a nicer person. But I wasn’t, I’m not and probably not going to change any time soon."

That was my first thought as well. Although, if I were a ticket-holder and had complied with the rules, I'd've been really pissed off about it.
The rule works at PGA events because they strictly enforce it. You get a verbal warning if anyone sees you with your phone out of your pocket, and the 2nd time you are thrown out of the event. Don't see why that wouldn't work at concerts, if the artist required it in the engagement contract and made the audience well aware in advance. ____________________

What's wrong with people pulling out cellphones at a concert? People want to take a pic or vid home as a memento. I have seen both ends of the spectrum: Ryan Adams is even worse than Chrissie about it and Springsteen (and others) will grab people's cell's and take photos of the band, video of the crowd, etc. As a performer, I could care less, as long as they are listening and paying attention. Either you embrace it or you choose to let it bother you--seems to me to be too short a life to let something like that bother you? Am I missing something? ____________________ "The only funeral you should ever try to interrupt is your own, and that should be a full-time job." -Kinkstah |

I'm with amyjared.
I paid for the ticket, if I want a photo I'm going to take it (without flash)
I have no use for hynde, it's her music that opens the most disgusting hate radio show on the airwaves, so I wouldn't be in her audience anyways. ____________________ Hittin' The Web::Hugh Duty Memorial Giveaway has begun!

Which radio show is that? I stopped listening to radio decades ago as the rock music stations all play the same songs, and I could care less about most DJs, and never got into talk radio.
I can see both perspectives. This was in a very small venue apparently so I can see why she would get annoyed at people constantly filming it with their phones.
I'm not a Ryan Adams fan and my friends that saw him said he put on a good show but his music does nothing for me and it's just boring to me.
I don't like cellphones at shows but I'm fine with people using them to film or take pictures as long as they don't talk on them, and it's better than them talking constantly to people around them. ____________________ Language is a virus from outer space. |

Two stories, the first was here in Sedona about 18 years ago. Jackson Browne used to hold a benefit concert at the Verde valley School...His guests included Bonnie Raitt, David Lindley, Graham Nash, Shawn Colvin and more. Printed right on the ticket were the words "NO recording devices-NO cameras"...Well, about halfway through Bonnie's set, she stopped, walked offstage and returned with two security guards and pointed at someone in the crowd. The guards jumped into the crowd and about a minute later re-emerged and handed Bonnie a 35mm camera with a lens about 6 inches long. Bonnie stepped up to the mic, camera held up so the crowd could see it and said "I wanna thank the A$$hole who thought it was OK to take pictures of me during the show for this beautiful camera, the kids here at the school will enjoy using this"..
Right on Bonnie!
About 5 years ago I am at a Boz Scaggs show at the Belly-Up Tavern in Solano Beach, Ca, (about 30 minutes N of San Diego) when the warm-up band finished. A few minutes go by and a gentleman parts the curtain and walks out to address the crowd ( about 800 peeps, Boz's mananger) "Boz is backstage and is very excited to come out and play for you, but in co-operation with the nice people here at the Belly-Up we (Boz) will not tolerate photos or the recording of his performance, ANYONE seen doing this will have their phones confiscated on the spot and not returned, thank you" And you know what?...No incidents, people actually listened to the show and it was grand.
Thanks and right on Boz!

Couldn't agree more , I think it's borderline out of control. , at Roger Waters last week it was crazy how many people were holding up phones recording the show personally I find it a bit annoying people in front of me holding up phones , like you said put your phones away and enjoy the music . I hope more artist do what Boz Scaggs does and ask people to refrain from pictures and recording . |

I see both sides. It's annoying when someone has their camera out, holding it up recording video (or repeat pictures) in front of you. I can see why the performer doesn't like it too.
Then again, I enjoy lots of audience video recordings on youtube. As long as it's not prohibited by the artist and people are considerate of who is around them (people often are not), I'm ok with it. ____________________ Tim L. |

I am with pops42 and JimSheridan on this one.
My wife and I went to see Mellencamp this past summer at the Illinois
State fair and he had Carlene Carter opening. My concert going has
dropped off a lot over the last decade, so it was a treat for us to attend.
We were about 20 ft from the stage for the show . Carlene Carter
opened up with just her playing the guitar and singing and a few
numbers on the piano, no backing band. Carlene may not be a household name
and I am sure her catalog is not familiar to most, including me. But that
does not give people the right to chat and talk , be obnoxious the whole way through
her set. I found it to be very distracting and difficult to focus/hear her performance,
and most of all VERY rude. I wish Mellecancamp would have heard this stuff going
on, I am sure he would not have any problem shutting those people down.
An individual behind us with his friends was being particularly loud(had a few to many), and I kind looked back over my shoulder at him just for a second. Then I heard him say something kind of in a smart aleck way that "oh, I'm sorry I forgot I was at a concert" Obviously you did
Really turned me off that night.
People can be really disrespectful. ____________________ https://youtu.be/xKtPlcugqF0 />

I go to concerts to hear the music first, so if someone wants to take a quick photo, fine. But I do hate the amateur videographers that film entire songs, or even whole shows. They don't realize they are shining a light at the people behind them that blocks their view. Just enjoy the show - the video is going to be shaky and unwatchable, and the audio will be tinny and unlistenable anyways.
And I understand the artists' point of view. They specifically hire photographers and sell tickets to people who pay to see them - the iphoners are sharing the music for free and taking photos from the professionals. ____________________ http://www.porkchopbob.com/ | http://www.brettbob.com/ |

Sadly concerts have just become a background soundtrack for the party that a lot of individuals are throwing for themselves. Too many people just living their lives through the little screen in front of them instead of in the big world around them.
As far as "My City Was Gone" by the Pretenders being used by Rush Limbaugh, Chrissie Hynde uses the royalties from that as a donation to PETA. |

Just goes to show how tame shows are now. In the 70s someone holding up a weird light box would have been the least of your worries. And the music was so f'n excellent you wouldn't have been distracted by anything, other than the light rigging falling on the first few rows, a riot, a brick of firecrackers going off, burning portapotties, standing in throwup, getting trampled, the person behind you setting your hair on fire, or some hippy taking a leak on your girlfriend.
All experienced first-hand btw. And that's just off the top of my head.

I don't like all the phones up in the air the whole concert. Taking a picture is one thing, I've done that, but recording the whole show while standing in front of me stinks. I'd be pissed if I paid money to see them, and she stopped the show because of that. I'm assuming she's not giving any money back to paying fans. ____________________ kevin |

I saw this post a few days ago and was kind of torn on the issue.
After some thought, I have to side with Chrissy. Yes, it's an extreme measure she took. At the same time, trying to get a glimpse of a band you love and being obstructed by a sea of cell phones raised in the air in front of you would certainly qualify as extreme, to me anyway.
There's got to be some middle ground here. I like to take pictures and video at shows as much as anyone. I almost always use my digital camera instead of my cell phone, not that this makes me any better.
How about a roped off photography area? Anyone who wants to take pictures or video would be directed to this area. Anywhere else, cell phones and cameras are banned. You would only be allowed to stay in that area for no more than maybe 15 minutes to allow other fans access. ____________________ Don't let the sounds of your own wheels

Re this, when I saw Loreena McKennitt recently she handled it well: There were huge no photos or recording signs all over, and she is quite strict about it. Before a song, early on, she announced no photos allowed, however since she understands very well the irresistible urge to use the device, and take pics, or text or whatever, this ONE song only is open for phone use.
Worked like a charm. Whole place was a sea of phones for that one song. Not ONE phone appeared for the rest of the evening.
Class act.
