I was going to post it but don't know how to load a photo. :}
September issue.. starting to be out there... cool black and white photo of him on SG. I wrote the main story, spoke to Warren, Jaimoe, Scott Sharrard for it. Also includes a story on 25 greatest songs. Andy aledort and I had a lot argument over the list... I'm almost happy with it.... happy and proud he's on the cover, as he should be. ____________________ Alan Paul

A Southern Rock legend...isn't that like a Rock Rock legend? Lol.
Nice job, Alan. The ABB are such a feast for anyone interested in the guitar, as a player or a learner or a listener.
I myself would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when you and Andy were debating! |

Thanks Zambi. I still don't know how to do that!

That quote is in the story! I would have preferred they not use that line, of course... but certainly worth it to have the cover.

It was all via email. i was at a severe disadvantage, because I was in Hong Kong with my son and he made the initial list. There was nothing I disagreed with, just more i wanted to add. I won a few big changes, but not all... ____________________ Alan Paul

Trust me. Much more difficult to find the current mag cover on the GW web-site than it is to cross-post the pic to a third party website ____________________

Alan, i was just busting chops. Any magazine cover editor would have insisted on having that caption. That one is not on you. Most of the world thinks of the ABB as southern rock, and that's no sin. Anyone with ears would never confuse them with 38 Special, so no harm no foul. I was just amused because as an ABB fan, i had repeatedly read Gregg's quabbles with that term.
You were in Hong Kong? I understand you are large there. ;-) |

I guess your eyes must be bleeding over the title of Gregg's new cd, right? Surely the musical and cultural influence of being born and reared in the South had absolutely no impact on the music of the ABB. I don't know why people who aren't from the South think there's something wrong with that. Please explain why you'd have preferred they not call Gregg a Southern Rock legend. As far as I know there are a whole lot of Southern Rock musicians who are very proud to proclaim their roots - as Gregg Allman obviously was. I guarantee there are plenty right here in South Carolina flying under the radar who are outstanding songwriters and performers. It is true they need to go north to get anybody to pay to see them, though.
Sorry to get all exorcised over this because I have always enjoyed all your work I have read. |

wearly, the joke was that "Southern Rock" is redundant because rock grew out of styles that were mostly Southern. It's something Gregg (or Dickey?) said forever ago. Although I think the ABB also didn't want to be lumped in with some of the lesser bands that followed in their footsteps. ____________________ http://www.tylersmusicroom.org |

Thanks, Marley. I am aware of the prior comments of Dickey and Gregg, who didn't want to have their music pigeonholed in a narrow category due to their many diverse influences. Their denials notwithstanding, Gregg's final title is "Southern Blood." And he and Dickey ultimately made their homes in The South. So I would prefer that the complimentary recognition of Gregg as "Southern Rock Legend" be embraced rather than rejected.

You're combining two separate terms: "the south" and "Southern Rock". It's not that they didn't like the South, obviously quite the opposite. It's that they didn't like the term "Southern Rock" as a genre since they didn't sound anything like Molly Hatchett or The Outlaws. Also, they disliked the Confederate iconography that some of the lesser artists started using onstage. No one here, nor the band, has anything against the south, just pointing out that Gregg (and Dickey and Butch) hated the term "Southern Rock" and that they got lumped in with artists they felt little kinship with. ____________________ http://www.porkchopbob.com/ | http://www.brettbob.com/ |

I'm not going to get into a tit for tat because I think this is a ridiculous argument. Everyone on this board loves the band and I think it's pretty clear what I meant. Obviously, neither Gregg nor Dickey or anyone else in the band ever felt ashamed of their Southern roots or tried to hide them and I have never done anything of the sort. I was referring to the term Southern Rock, as it is commonly used not to the adjective Southern. Come on. Is this really how we want to spend our time?

Velour jacket, silk shirt, rock star GA..... the Gibson SG on stage period wasn't long.... never really see analytics discussion re GA electric playing those years...... slips in through a bit unnoticed.... ____________________ Rage With Age |

After a railroad, as a pun. But like porkchopbob said, the band members were proud of their roots (and beloved for it) while rejecting "Southern rock" because it reduced their music to a cliche and lumped them in with a bunch of other bands that came after them and weren't as good.

Eh. Southern Rock is a defined genre of music and probably works better for Guitar Player readers. However you define rock music, the ABB unquestionably played it, and they played lots of non-blues stuff. Also if "Southern Rock" is kind of redundant, "Southern Blues" would be even moreso. It's kind of a challenge to think of a major blues musician who isn't Southern! Eventually I got around to Taj Mahal, who came from NY. ____________________ http://www.tylersmusicroom.org |

I don't get why people are so personally taking issue with the fact that band members are on record as hating the term "Southern Rock", which should not be confused with the actual region they proudly called home. It's two different things, people.
And yeah, "Great Southern" is a play on railroad names (today's Great Southern rail is actually much further south in Australia).
Deep breathe, people. ____________________ http://www.porkchopbob.com/ | http://www.brettbob.com/ |

I saw the ABB as often as I could beginning in 1970. The term southern rock didn't come to my attention until 1974 when a number of bands out of the southern US began to release albums. This music had a tendency to mix country, western swing, rock and blues. With Brothers and Sisters, the ABB I guess did move in that direction but not as much as bands such as Charlie Daniels or Marshall Tucker. But the ABB was put in that box by whoever coined it. And Gregg, Butch and Dickey didn't like it according to several of their interviews.
To Alan Paul. I don't remember Gregg playing guitar during any of the original lineup shows I saw. After Duane passed away, Gregg played a few songs using electric guitar from about 1972 to 1978 or 9. And in his solo band up to the last shows. Did Gregg favor a certain type of electric? I remember him with Strats more than other makes.
Also I ran across a site Celebrity Net Worth while reading up on Eric Clapton who apparently is worth over 250 million. So I checked members of ABB. Only 4 were listed.
1. Dickey Betts. 40 million.
2. Gregg Allman. 18 million.
3. Warren Haynes. 13 million.
4. Butch Trucks. Negative net worth at death.
You have any idea if those numbers are accurate?
Derek Trucks wasn't listed but his wife Susan was at 6 million.

Al, it wasn't clear to me what you meant or I wouldn't have said anything in the first place. Southern Rock is a horrible term and never should be applied to the ABB or anyone in it, ok? I apologize. It does seem pretty odd that so many people credit the ABB with forging it, though. |

You guys all just gave me a good laugh with all the Southern Stuff. Who cares anyway? It is music - plain and simple.
I'll skip that whole debate.
It is a great tribute cover for Gregg especially considering that he wasn't really a guitarist.
I imagine that Al and Andy were pushing for a cover for him. Thanks.
Opened my mailbox and there was Gregg staring at me. Nice surprise. Great article and pictures. The 25 song part was predictable to be honest. Would have liked something like the 25 best Live songs like the 50 Dead songs from earlier in the year but that takes lots of effort. Either way - it was cool.
One thing that does suck and I don't mean this as a knock on Al (please don't take it that way) as it has nothing to do with him. GW stopped mailing the magazines out in plastic. So now they stick a mailing sticker on the front of the mag. Within months, we get the Mule and Gregg on covers of GW and some twit sticks the mailing sticker straight in the middle. Totally destroys the image and all the work put into making a nice cover. It is as if they are attempting to obscure as much of the cover as possible. Not tucked in the corner like every other mailing label I have ever got on a magazine. But almost dead center.
I have like 80-90% of the Guitar World mags since the beginning. Along with most other guitar mags. Hundreds of them in stacks and boxes. Ended up an unintended collection over the years. Really sucks that I now get stickers on them and they get mangled in the mail. Not to mention really terrible paper but understand that is a cost issue.
Had to go buy a copy of the Mule mag at the store and will have to do the same with the Gregg issue. Just for the collection but not doing that for any other. Punished for being a loyal customer/reader? That's my bitch session.
Thanks Al. Great job and appreciate the effort and skill. ____________________ Chicago Black Hawks - next season.
