I was there, not too far behind that camera. It was a great show, I love this band. I still think Doyle adds absolutely nothing, but can't wait to see this band again soon.

What do all these great musicians see in Doyle that I don't? I'm not a hater. And I've tried and tried. If Clapton and Derek believe he brings something to the table, then that's enough for me. But try as I might, I just can't get anything out of his singing, playing or songwriting contributions. Goin all the way back to Riding With the King record where I thought his songs were the weakest

Yeah, I hear ya, I don't want to sound like a hater, but "Maybe This Time" from dTb's Already Free could have been such a cool song if it wasn't sung by Doyle. He sucks the life out of it. He's a solid guitar player for sure, but I wouldn't mind just a little less of him when it comes to TTB. I'm a big believer that if you can't sing super well, don't sing at all (see Bob Weir, Trey Anastasio,...)

I was there, sort of--leaning on the barricades outside the venue with a bunch of other grumpy people. it still sounded good, but it would have been nice to see the performance too...

In the next issue of HTN you will read exactly what Doyle brings to the table as told to me by Derek and Susan. Good stuff - I think you will be surprised at how deep the contributions are.

Glad to hear Derek will be in the next issue, always interesting the hear what he has to say, but I'd rather just hear what Doyle brings. Having seen them without Doyle and with, I prefer them without. Not that Doyle detracts from the show, his style is just very unmemorable to me. But I learned long ago to accept that an artist can decide with whom he or she wants to and enjoys creating music, so if Derek and Susan are happy, that's all that matters. Well, so long as Doyle doesn't sing.

If nothing else, DB2 has mojo.

It just so happens he is a great singer, songwriter, guitarist IMHO. Maybe not breakthru stuff but he's a great collaborator and like JNB said, his contributions to Derek's career are wide and many. Looking forward to reading more about that in HTN.

I can't say I've ever been "blown away" by any guitar solo by DB2, but I love to hear him play.

Sounds good to me.

I'm a big fan of his version of Outside Woman Blues from one of Clapton's Guitar Festival shows (2007, maybe?). It's the one thing I've heard by him that I really really like.

Yeah, that was alright, alright. I don't hear the "great singer" at all, pretty average voice to me. His guitar-playing is Henrix hero-worship-wantabe, albeit a pretty good one. Not saying he's bad by any means, he's a really good player, just not my cup of char.

Doyle plays mostly rhythm, and gets put down, poor fellow. And a thread with nothing about Bob Weir and he gets a slam. Kind of funny the hero worship Jerry gets and he really was a pretty bad singer. But he had the mojo, package and shining guitar. Bob had his moments, but overall he was a very good singer. Saw The Other One a few nights ago, great doc. Haven't really heard him lately, and from the regular trashing here, expected a burn out bad singer now. He was extremely articulate and his singing was pretty good. Watched with a professional singer who has years of schooling and they agreed.

I'm curious what folks find offensive about his voice. Although 1-2 of his solo discs were overproduced, I thought his singing was great. Love the Arc Angels as well.

After watching this, I found myself going back and watching the DTB. Doyle compliments Derek, but I don't see him pushing the music much. I simply hear Kofi and Derek with drums and Doyle adding at touch.

Doyle recommended Derek to Clapton who was not familiar with him. If this introduction had never happened one can assume there would have been no Clapton at the Beacon in 2009 or any ABB appearances at Crossroads.

You have to remember that outside of a very brief period with Arc Angels and some solo work Doyle has basically been a backup musician for the last 30 years. He played with Stevie Ray Vaughan a lot who would call him on stage when he was 16 and by the time he was 17 he was in the Fabulous Thunderbirds playing rhythm behind Jimmie Vaughan for a few years. He toured with Rogers Waters singing and playing David Gilmour's parts. He played and recorded with Clapton for over a decade.

Susan Tedeschi on Doyle

quote:
Doyle and I have been friends a long time. Then Derek and Doyle became really close when they both played with Clapton in 2006 and 2007. So now those two are inseparable (laughs). They’re like best friends, they’re adorable, so they get along great. There’s just natural chemistry there. Doyle is actually bringing out a band to open up. He’ll have my old bass player [Ted Pecchio], who actually used to play with one of our drummers [Tyler Greenwell], cause we have two drummers, so Ted and Tyler used to be an amazing pair together. So it’s great that we’ll all kind of be out on the road again this summer. So Ted is playing with Doyle and then Doyle has another drummer and guitar player and that is just going to be a blast. He has a new record coming out that he is finishing also.

I interviewed Doyle a couple of years ago and he said you were a “true bad ass,” that you were fantastic. When was the first time you really worked with him?

The first time I worked with Doyle was back in 1999. We worked on a Double Trouble project together. I knew him through Stevie Ray Vaughan’s old band basically, and Jimmie Vaughan introduced me as well. So that was back when I first really got to know Doyle. I started working with him a little bit here and there and then we started writing through the years. We always stayed in touch and he is a bad ass, holy crap, he is amazing (laughs). And he’s a lefty so he plays really unique and that’s one of the reasons I love him so much is cause he is such an amazing rhythm player.

Being a rhythm player is really underrated. Like nowadays, people have a lot of flash and flair. People think, “Oh Joe Bonamassa and these guys,” and I’m like, no, anybody can play licks and be melodic at times but not many people can really play amazing rhythm. And sing at the same time. He is so unique and he knows just what to add to a song musically. It’s always the right thing. He also plays in many tunings as well as standard upside down. He also plays in open E, D, C, A, G, like a lot of different open tunings. And invents a lot too, so his chord voicing sounds very different. And Derek always plays in Open E tuning and I play in standard, so between the three of us when we get together, it’s really cool because we’re not all playing the exact same chord; even if we’re all playing, say, a G7. None of them sound the same because of the way they’re tuned and the way they’re played. So it’s really cool.
