An e-mail from the band publicising their tour dates suggests yet another damned hiatus in the offing:

"We will be wraping (sic) up Flecktone touring early next year, don't know when we will be out again. So don't miss the Original Flecktones this time around. Be there."

I know all things must come to an end - or a hiatus - but we haven't seen nearly enough of them in Europe and I hope that they will squeeze in some dates before they go their separate ways.

I last saw them with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White in November 2009 at The Barbican, Al.

Two sets plus both bands jamming. Seeing Victor Wooten and Stanley Clarke jousting was memorable!

Hi Guys, best wishes from Jersey!
What a bummer....love this band. As you say they've not played nearly enough over here. Enjoyed Bela guesting with his wife in the 'Park' last Sunday [as part of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco!]
One forgets what an incredible musician he is; so technically gifted and with plenty of soul and grace.
Truly awesome as our friends would say.
Nick

I'm going to see the Flecktones at the Calvin Theater in Northampton, Mass
on November 10. Looking forward to it.

I dunno about hiatus. I read somewhere (not sure where though) that Howard Levy only committed through some spring dates, but not beyond that. It could be they want to give him some space and not push things or make any "with you or without you" announcements. If he ultimately declines, however, I'm not sure that means the Flecktones stop indefinitely though. I hope the original lineup sojourns on though. I always thought they were sorely missing Levy's contributions after he left back in the 90s.

Bela always has other irons in the fire, I enjoy his other projects. Do understand the problem with the lack of touring Europe, though.

Is this hiatus for Bela with the Original Flecktones, or does that include the Jeff Coffin version as well? He has taken time off, before, but always comes back.

As an interesting irony, my daughter and I went to see the DTB in Montreal a few years ago. We were trying to decide whether to follow Derek up to Quebec the following night or stay in Montreal and see the Flecktones. My daughter asked Derek, he said to go see Bela, because he was going to stop touring for a while.

Either way, as posted above, Bela stays on the road with all sorts of interesting projects, so at least for us Yanks, there are plenty of chances to see him.

I am thinking that the announcement of a hiatus is, as Zambi said, more a function of uncertainty w/ Levy than anything else. And probably a bit of clever marketing, sort of like the ABB's "the only shows currently scheduled for the year (2011) are the Beacon and Wanee." Some took that as gospel, but it was just wordsmithing, as we now know.

Perhaps the Flecktones induce Levy to remain or Coffin to come back, or maybe get someone else. The brand and chemistry between Bela and the Wooten Bros is too strong to let that die for very long.

But yeah, Bela will always be doing other things, like his show w/ Zakir Husain and Edgar Meyer I saw earlier this yr, or the Sparrow Quartet from a few yrs ago. Or he could roll out another Africa project tour, that sadly I missed last yr. One of my best shows ever was when Bela opened for and then joined Nickel Creek on their final tour in 07.

Edit-Flecktones on Jimmy Fallon Nov 14. Someone remind me!

Not to be a threadjacker but...does anyone here know of the show with Bela sittin in with ABB. I know I've heard a killer banjo infused Elizabeth Reed but since the early onset oldtimers I can't remember the date. Tried the search function first but nothing popped up...

3/15/03. I was there! Best seats I ever had at the Beacon. Yes, Liz Reed for the encore, and also Come On In My Kitchen during the acoustic mini-set (if you could call it that after it was pared down to 2-3 songs).
