Having watched the Superbowl for many years now, I have to say that I think it's about time that the artists "singing" it were told to tone it down and have some respect for your National Anthem. Being a Scot, I have no great love for "God Save The Queen", but would be apalled if anyone sang it the way Aquillera murdered your anthem last night.
Would suggest that it's best left to the fans as at our International Football and Rugby matches.

(edited to add - An interpretation of it as part of a performance (a la Hendrix or Queen) is an entirely different matter)

I agree, artists should be told " hey show respect or don't do it" I don't have a problem if it's an amatuer, a kid and they mess up or even a little bit of artistic license. I've seen some "stars" however absolutely butcher national anthems

Pretty simple...and selfish...the song was all about the singer
and her verbal gymnastics....it wasn't about the words, symbolism or the audience.

Yeah, I agree ...... she was very good.

Something about the "Flyover" (4 fighter jets) over a roofed stadium seemed a little strange to me! (well I guess it's for T.V)

X2. Christina however, botched the lyrics, I believe.
Yeah, I caught it. All of us at the SB party I was at heard it and were going, "WTF?? Did she just screw up the lyrics to our national anthem on TV?"

I'm of the opinion that a singer can inject their own style into the song, but it still needs to be sung with reverence. She was putting on a show, and sung it like it was any other song, IMO. Shame....

Christina seemed like the musical version of Sarah Palin with a limited info capacity in her cranium. She should have used a Palin cheat sheet on one of her hands to cover any info or lyrical overflow that her brain couldn't handle.

Considering how often people screw up SSB lyrics, it's unfathomable that she would not be absolutely certain not to repeat the embarrassment.

Man am I glad to see someone put this up here........I was sickened listening to her absolutely f*&%ing ruin the song!! I was working at a restaurant and tvs were on everywhere and I was yelling at the TV that she ruined it. Noone else seemed bothered by it. This is the same reason I can only turn on American Idol for 30 seconds. As soon as someone starts "singing" like this I am sickened by it and turn it off.

I think a bit too much is being made of her flubbing the lines. I doubt she sings the National Anthem very often. How often have we overlooked Gregg flubbing the lines to songs he not only sings often but he wrote them. This was just an "oh sh!t" moment, not a Rosanne Barr moment. She didn't disrespect anyone. The terrorists have not won.

Having said that, I am not a fan of her style at all and would have greatly preferred someone else, possibly from the armed forces, singing the anthem. But a lot of folks must be fans because she's had considerable success in her career.

Seems like it has turned into a contest for who can sing the
words "glare" and "free" the loudest and longest, and the
crowd could care less about the rest

Imho, You are wrong. Let's try to remember exactly how close this new country was to collapsing when that song was penned....History. Fact. Sacrifice.

Then perhaps singing it should be less of a spectacle and more of a sign of respect. I mean how long does it take to sing?..3 minutes. Even those with the shortest of attention spans can stand still for that long and not be concerned with whether or not it made you tap your feet.

Of course I know that and agree fully. But that does not mean mistakes won't happen. This was a mistake, nothing more.

The Las Vegas Over/Under line for the anthem was 1:56. Due to her flubbing the line, it was "under". I'll bet there were a few people who were pissed ONLY FOR THAT REASON that she flubbed the line. Had she sang the correct lyrics, it would've been OVER the 1:56.

Should should've done what Whitney Houston did and pre-recorded the vocal (that is if she could lip-sync with any accuracy, as Whitney did)

If you don't know the song, you shouldn't sing it on the world's stage.

As a fellow Brit, I said the same as Jim. Why can't they just sing the song?! It's not a compeitition!

I find it surprising the way in which Americans allow their national anthem to be mutilated but I guess that is for you to say, not me.

To digress, the Scottish anthem is a folk song from the 1960s, which is controversial in itself, and its performance at sporting events can be a bit of a rabble too.

PS I thought the girl from Glee was equally as guilty!

I didn't even see/hear The National Anthem--the hosts of my party used their DVR and backed up the Glee singer to hear her song again...missed the Anthem completely and didn't know about any mess-up until today.
