I recently have been listening to a lot of the shows I've gotten from the Trades Forum and have two questions about them. At the start of Statesboro Blues there is always a four beat countdown to the start of the song, (one, two, three, four) or something close to that. Is this tradition or is it needed to make sure they start together, and are there other songs that they usually do this to? Also, on Ain't Wastin' Time No More one verse sounds like it changed from " ...all the War Freaks are ....", to "....all the terrorists are leaving us alone, we'll raise our children in any peacefull way we can.... " from the original verse. Is this only at The Beacon shows or is it at most shows. Any answers will be appreciated. Thanks.
Be safe,
John

As I always heard AWTNM it was "all the war freaks die off, leaving us alone". I have heard on many versions now, not just Beacon shows "all the terrorists die off, leaving us alone". I think in some of the late 70's shows he worked in "the lawyers" somehow, but I'd have to go back and listen. I love that line "it's up to you and me brother, to try and try again"...

I think they could play Statesboro in thier sleep and in perfect time, without the count off. I think you could classify it as tradition. Gregg has been using the terrorist bit for many years now, he also changes the line, 'leave your mind alone and just get high', to, 'leave your mind alone and just get just get by....' which I think he started using after he got clean.

The AWTNM change came in '95 I believe when they brough the song out of retirement. It's been that way ever since.

Another change made to AWTNM:

was: Leave your mind alone, and just get high
is: Leave your mind alone, we'll all get by

Was the change coincident with Gregg getting sober?

Noiw that I think about it, "the lawyers" line was actually worked into Whipping Post in the place of "now she's with one of my goodtime buddies...drinkin' in some crosstown bar"... I'll have to dig out a show and listen to what that line actually was. I think it was during the '79 shows.

It's "police" on the Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas version. The song came back on April 21, 1995. I don't have any shows from that time, but I'm pretty sure the "terrorist" change first appeared then - that was two days after the Oklahoma City Bombing.
