Devon Allman follows his family's fate
By Regis Behe
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, September 28, 2006

For years, Devon Allman resisted his family's legacy. The son of Gregg
Allman, he indulged himself in all manner of genres -- one of the first
albums he owned was a greatest hits collection by Wings -- while shunning
music that was close at hand and available.
Then came the revelation.
"It was just this inner voice: 'Man, you should be doing this, it's so
easy.'" Allman says in advance of appearance Tuesday with Honeytribe at
Moondog's, in Blawnox. "But then there's the other side, that people are
going to be saying you're riding on your family name. I finally got to a
point of 'This is what I do, this is who I am, this is who I sound like.' I
literally woke up at five in the morning on Jan. 3 of last year with the
epiphany of 'I'm doing what I'm doing; I don't care what people say."
It would take the severest of curmudgeons to deny Allman isn't a worthy
successor to the family name. "Torch," Honeytribe's first CD, is filled
with the same tasty, blues-rock riffs that made the Allmans famous. There's
a very good cover of the reggae touchstone "No Woman, No Cry" and two
superb instrumentals, "Mahalo" and "511 Texas Avenue" that highlight his
dexterity as a guitarist.
Allman is quick to point out this is no solo excursion, as he has enlisted
bassist George Potsos, drummer Mark Oyarzabal and keyboardist Jack Kirkner,
all veterans of St. Louis-area bands. And he always has had the support of
his father, who gave Devon his blessing when he decided to become a
musician after a brief flirtation with acting during high school.
"Literally the third day of my senior year of high school, I walked out the
door and quit," he says, noting that he already had passed the required
classes for graduation.
Instead of taking pointless -- for him -- classes, he joined his father and
the Allman Brothers Band on the road. At the end of the tour, at the last
show, he got the surprise of his life when his father called him in from
the wings to join the band onstage.
"Everybody knew beforehand it was going to happen but me," he says. "It was
pretty crazy, playing before probably 5,000 people."
At that point, Devon still was intent on distancing himself from all things
Allman. He lived in Nashville and Memphis and did session work. He got a
break recording an album with Javier Vargas, a popular Spanish guitarist,
that also featured Cream's Jack Bruce and vocalist Alex Ligterwood,
formerly of Santana. A song Allman sang on, "How Verso Are You," was a Top
10 hit in Europe.
And still the Allman legacy called, and still he resisted -- until two
years ago. Now, Devon Allman finds he's happy and eager at the chance to
live up to the music that is in his genetic makeup.
All he wants is a chance, for people to come out to a show or give "Torch"
a listen.
"A lot of people are interested because of my name, but a lot of people
come away from a show or from listening to the album saying 'They're the
real deal,'" he says. "People come in with a level of respect for my
heritage and my name, but they leave with an entirely different perspective
on that respect, and that's really gratifying to me. We're doing our thing,
and people come away saying, 'It's really cool he's related to the Allman
Brothers, but even if he was Devon Smith, Honeytribe is a force.'" ____________________ "Love is all that remains the same. That's what it's all coming to..." ~

AWESOME pictures, Mitzi!! And great idea on the thread.
My Atlanta H*Tribe show post and pics:
quote: Last night was awesome!!
Even Lil Bro joined Devon & company on stage and flat kicked ass!! Here's
what I posted in Devon's My Space group, along with pics...enjoy!!
MESSAGE I POSTED ON HONEYTRIBE'S GROUP FORUM:
I'm trying to come up with the words to describe last night's show at
Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta, my home town. I'm struggling. All I can say
is I have a full, warm heart, fed soul and huge smile on my face. I'll try
to recap the night briefly.
I saw Honeytribe on Tuesday in Athens. While they're always good (and they
were Tuesday), they didn't get to play long and didn't even get warmed up.
I prefer to see an entire show (I'm selfish like that) and I'm sure they
prefer to play a lot longer. So, to me, that was just an appetizer Last night was a
FULL COURSE MEAL!! The boys were smokin!!! I don't remember setlists well
since I'm so lost in the music. They played several off the new CD and
Pedro even sang one(which was a pleasant surprise). But even more to my
surpise, George sang Riders on the Storm!!! It blew me away!!
At the end of the night, Devon graciously invited Tony Tyler up on stage
for "One Way Out." Devon looked like a proud papa when Lil Bro was going
off with some amazing licks. It did my heart good to see all my boys on
stage together. The sound coming from that stage, from start to finish,
was sweet, sweet stuff. I'm sure I'll think of more as the day progresses,
as I'm walking around reeling from the night and having flashbacks -- the
good kind.
Let me just say that I'm happy to be friends with such am amazing group of
fine young men (Devon, Jack, George, Mark, Pedro and Tony) who are also
extremely talented musicians.
A few pics... every picture tells a story, don't it?

Devon Allman's Honeytribe is doing a good job getting the word out on its
"Torch" CD. Allman is featured in both Guitar Player and Guitar One
magazines, and the song "Torch" is on Relix magazine's sampler. After the
band's CD release party, the group hit the road for a national tour.

Saw them last night in Rochester with my buddy Pete. They played at The
Club inside of the Water Street Music Hall. There were about 50 people
there total, but they played like they were in front of 5000. It was an
incredible show. They covered an old B.B. King song as well as Purple Rain
(which totally rocked). They did 6 out of the 11 tunes off of Torch, which
were all awesome live.
We hung out after the show and talked with George after the show and he was
incredibly humble. Then we talked with Pedro for a while. It was cool
seeing him in a different setting than with Dickey. I never Pedro could
play such a mean slide! As we were walking out, Devon was standing outside
the club and he actually stopped us to thank us for picking up some shirts.
He also told me he saw me singing along to the tunes off of Torch, which
was funny. I told him I haven't been able to get the cd out of my player
since I got it in the mail. He got a kick out of that. He also promised us
that he would put on a better show next time since he was fighting a cold
tonight. I don't know how a better show is possible.
Overall, my first Honeytribe show was AMAZING. GO SEE THIS BAND!!!!
Peace and love,
Steve |
