To be honest, my wife and I started watching American Idol this season and I was pulling for Taylor Hicks to win.

That said, I never expected him to enter the realm of music I really love. First he played with the Allman’s and now this (see the guests at the end of the list):

06/29/06 Wiltern Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
1: Can't Get High* > Walk On* > Pickin' Up The Pieces*, This Part Of Town* > Knocking 'Round The Zoo* > Pigeons > Better Off* > Time Zones** > Bust It Big**

2: Solid Rock*, Tortured Artist* > Space Wrangler* > Walkin' (For Your Love)*, Heaven*, Imitation Leather Shoes* > Drums > Fixin' To Die* > Ribs And Whiskey* > Mr. Soul

E: From The Cradle* > Fishwater***

* with John Keane on guitar
** with John Keane on pedal steel
*** with John Keane on guitar, Taylor Hicks on harmonica
[Last 'Better Off' - 11/14/01, 275 shows]

Excuse my ignorance, but which band or artist was the headliner?

That's Widespread Panic, EZM...I sort of dig their new album...several of the new songs in that setlist above....

I think Mr Hicks is doing the right thing by exposing himself (no not that way) to fans like us.
I think he is a very talented guy. He has got the whole Soul patrol thing down.
He can play the Harmonica that is for sure.

I'll buy his first post Idol CD.

I agree. Taylor is doing the right thing by trying to appeal this type of audience. Number 1, if you're talented, you will have a very long career. Number 2, with this type of audience, you are less restrained in the creative process. Meaning, people like us are more accepting to music outside the top 40. Number 3, he ain't no pretty boy, and he sho can't dance, so he better be able to play and sing!!

Peace

I'm slow to accept, much less support, new stars, and Hicks didn't knock me out in the bits I saw on American Idol, nor in that new Ford "possibilities" commercial. You may like to know, though, that his new Arista album, Do I Make You Proud, is #1 in the Billboard Hot 100.

Other Billboard #1 artists, as listed in a local weekly paper:
Busta Rhymes
Daniel Powter
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Kenny Chesney
Dixie Chicks
Yung Joc
Gabriel & Dresden
Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean

I'm really not going to buy any of those.

I could not agree with you anymore. The day I buy something off that list, will be the first time. I have a buddy who buys from that list because he thinks he is staying "hip". Nooooooooo thanks........

I don't know Taylor personally, but I have some friends that know him and he has been a Panic fan for quite awhile now. It was really only a matter of time that this happened once he won AI. Besides I don't think he did any singing on Fishwater, he just added a little harp funk to it.

Not exactly, Ed. By emphasizing "really" and "those," I was saying they all looked worse than Hicks. Nevertheless, after pointing out that lots of people are checking out Hicks's CD, I was saying that anybody's Billboard hotness should not be meaningful.

Now, if I were putting stock in guilt by association, I'd be more for a guy who's guested with the Allman Brothers and WSP. What's-his-face last year--the long-haired "Whipping Post" singer--he never did sit in with the ABB, did he? (Oh yeah--Bo Bice.)

I wonder how genuine Hicks's jamming invitation was--whether there wasn't big record company promotions dollars being given to the ABB and WSP. Not that he might not have fit in onstage, but you know it was the money guys in both camps wrangling out these appearances, not like Gregg met Hicks in a bar, and they hit it off, and Gregg says, "Hey, man, if you're ever in town when we're playing, you oughta get you your harp and jam with us."

Sorry if this whole American Idol thing makes me rather cynical.

Hey Peter, I agree, the guys in the back are making these things happen because they see this market as one that Taylor can hit hard. Serioulsy, what other market will embrace him?
He has got to grab the R&B, Jam band, Blues crowd to make it.

can y'all imagine 37 years ago, the AI tv show is on. several 'acts' come out & do whatever. then comes out the ABB? how y'all think america would've reacted to em? i think in my little part of the world, the parents would've had a fit, the kids would've went wild and they wouldn't've been a bowl of cotton or a leaf of backer nowhere to be found. they'd've picked it all to get the money to buy whatever this new band put out.

I guess there are many of you out there who don't know anything about Taylor hicks. He has been kicking around the bar scene for about 10 years touring the south. He has been jamming in bars , Writing original music ,while his friends have been doing the nine to five and saving for retirement. His band does a jamming version of southbound and call me the breeze .If you think because he finally has a chance to put some change in his pockets he isn't a real musician you are nuts. This guy can play and loves music. I hope he doesn't sell out with the fame he is getting . Taylor's band is a hard working band . Take a listen. I will post a link to a site GO ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE BOTTON UNDER LIVE SET # 1 check out southbound TAYLOR on HARP!!!!!!!!!!! This guy was just about to hang it up before American Idol to go work in a bank or some crap.

I was just wondering why someone would join an ABB forum and then make 8 posts all about Taylor Hicks. Nothing ABB related. I was just curious. Isn't there a taylor hicks site somewhere?

just bustin' your balls a bit.
