Hi. I kind of find it hard to believe that there is no live concert footage somewhere in this world of the original ABB lineup! There are many excellent live recordings of the band but in all these years, no film footage seems to have emerged. I remember seeing something on the ABB on either VH1 or VH1 Classic a while ago, not sure if it was a video or something else, but lo and behold there was footage of the original band and I know for a fact that a couple of years ago a full length clip from the Bill Graham archives of the band performing DREAMS was available on the net. Any chance at all that sometime in the future we may actually see some feature length concert footage of the original lineup? Sure as heck would make one hell of a DVD if you ask me.

*Noticed Finsky's mention on the previous page about the Southern Voices documentary -- I would think twice before buying this. I sent them (Hey Brooks) a check last July (2002) for the video -- they sent me nothing back. $44.95 down the drain.
Hate to use the forum for a personal gripe, just a friendly warning that these folks can't be trusted.*

Stephen,

Have you gotten a chance to check out that exact documentary on this site? They had a link somewhere here...

Here's an idea. Why not feature the brief(?) (40 minutes) Love Valley footage as a DVD extra to the next studio album? Sort of like the bonus DVD that came with Oteils album.

The only thing UNFAIR is, many of the fans not getting an opportunity to see any original ABB footage.

The obvious solution to dealing with all of these bits'n'pieces (if whole gigs can't be traced), is a live DVD anthology, akin to what The Who did (30 Years of Maximum R'n'B Live) or Led Zeppelin (DVD).

I'm more than happy for the band to take their time & get this stuff sourced properly - matter of fact, if they want any help in deciding what to chase after, I'm sure we could offer them a helping hand or two!!

Denza,

The story, or "legend" I heard is that, Tom Dowd had some of the March gigs recorded so he could use them for production purposes (who played when, & etc.). I'm guessing something in the vein of The Band of Gypsys footage. Whether it's true or not is a good question.

The 9/26/71 footage has since disappeared. The only person(s) who would know what the exact contents are would be the seller & winner of the ebay auction.

The copy I have of the 9-23-70 FE footage has the 4 tracks from one source and then a another Whipping Post from an alternate source. Would that FE Whipping Post be the second footage? I always wondered if that is all there is of that alternate source...

Now where's the 9/26/71?...and I wonder why it says ?min. ? Has anybody seen this 100 min. version of Love Valley? I know somebody who said they have a complete MJ from LV but that still wouldn't be 100 min.

Interestingly enough, Kirk told me back in the spring that they had found some better Love Valley footage, but didn't really know what to do with it, because it would be too short (I think he said about 40 min.) to release to the fans and feel fair about it.

Friggin' page won't let me copy the link! Keeps popping it back to the advertising page.

Go to the link I posted, & go to the second link under "What's New". Then, go to "Moving Duane."

Should work..

Just like to add to the speculation. Go to the link, & check it out. It's all in Japanese, so only a few of you will be able to actually read it..... but, the content is what is important here.

http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Orchestra/3750/allman.html

Love Valley, Fillmore East, 7/21/71, a second Fillmore East footage(?), the Hall of Fame induction footage, & the BIG mystery 9/26/71 footage. Now, I've seen most of these except for the second FE footage, & the alleged 9/26/71 footage. I guess the site also missed on the Atlanta Pop Festival footage, which was included on the Southern Voices documentary thing, which Lana posted the link a few months ago here. The WP footage from it is the BEST stuff I've seen of the original band. I always confused it w/ the Love Valley footage b/c they were basically wearing the same clothes, & it was a bit hard to tell'em apart.

The Hall of Fame induction thing is awesome. Any ABB fan has to see those clips of the early days of the band. The 7/21/71 clip of Duane soloing on DSW has unusual energy pouring out of the grainy picture.

Now, I've never heard anything in regards to a second FE footage (or have I? ), but I DID see the 9/26/71 footage on sale on ebay a few years ago.... maybe about three years ago? The seller supposedly had the orginal reels, & wanted a ridiculous amount of $$ for it (last I remember). Was only about....a 5-10 minute clip that existed...I think. Duane was playing his SG on the captions I saw, & as you can see from the examples.... the quality ain't nothing to shout about.

I do wonder what happened to that .... auction, & what came of it.

Hello all,
I remember seeing a short clip of the Brothers playing Whipping Post from the Fillmore East (in color) on VH1 about 2 years ago, part of some 70's tribute show or something of that matter. very good clip, just showed the "good lord i feel like im dying" then the harmony lines up to the solo. At the time I didn't know anything about the Allman Brothers but that one clip made me go "hey thats pretty cool", went and bought At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach the next day and been hooked ever since. Earlier in the year i had found a full lenght clip of them playing Dreams at the FIllmore East. Good sound except the vocals were totally buried. I know the website for some reason droped the clip though, but hopefully its out there some where.

That sounds great Denza. Have been a fan of ABB since 1969 and have never seen any footage of Duane. The stuff that dreams are made of.

I could put together something with that and some other material on down the line. I have Red Rocks and Van Morrison B&P offers to fulfil in the trades forum and some other things on the side, so when those are done I will if it's something y'all would be interested in.

Actually, I have that video sitting on my hard drive...I believe that it was done as a promotion for the Dreams box set...

Do you think you could share it?

I too remeber seeing this many years ago on MTV, it was a video for Statesboro Blues that mixed in black/white footage of the original lineup with color footage of the "current" lineup (can't remember what the "current" line up was in the video, but pretty sure it was pre-Warren/Woody). Haven't seen it in years and had forgot about it until I read your post. Has anyone else seen this?

Let's just hope the camera man's not the same guy who was responsible for running the tape machine on 6/26/71.

There was also an alleged SECOND camerman down by the grassy knoll.

I'm not into conspiracy theories so I'll have to dispute that "second cameraman" scenario.

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad to see that I'm not the only one hoping for some original ABB footage. Not that I really thought I was the only one.

gondicar - Your right, it was a video for STATESBORO BLUES and I remember one really good close-up of Duane and when I saw that video, I right away said to myself, there HAS to be footage out there!

finsky - Thanks for the pic. The cameraman is clearly visible filming.

So, I guess there is hope afterall?

Benjamin- yeah, the camerawork during the 9/23/70 footage is pretty subpar. But I guess it's all we got.

BillDP,

If you look around on this forum, this topic has DEFINITELY been discussed, many times over. Many here seem to know what does seem to exist, but considering how scarce & rare Duane era recordings are, how scarce & rare would FOOTAGE be? Considering their time together was short, it shouldn't really come as a surprise at the lack of material.

The DVD idea is great... but I'm sure there are legal hurdles.

Isn't the 9/23/70 footage under the Bill Graham estate? I'm sure they played more songs that night, but whether it exists or not is a different story. It's an edited mess, but very inspirational to watch.

The little I saw of the Atlanta Pop stuff was unreal. Some day.... some day....

Go here, & see who is to the left of Douchette.
