Dickey Betts to Make Announcement on Touring for 74th Birthday
Dickey Betts, founding member and guitarist for legendary southern rock icons the Allman Brothers Band, will make an announcement regarding his decision on returning to the road next week on December 12, his 74th birthday, Sarasota, FL’s Herald-Tribune reports.
Betts’ manager David Spero says that he and the guitarist “have had many discussions” about a possible return to the road in the past few years. In a rare interview earlier this fall, Betts told Rolling Stone that he considers himself a retired musician, calling the situation “a little bit of burnout, a little sour grapes, a little bit like a boxer who gives it up.”
“After Gregg Allman’s passing, his interests were heading elsewhere,” Spero says. “Since the Rolling Stone interview, I have received interest from a few promoters which I passed on to Dickey. The fans’ interest has also had a big impact on him. We have agreed to make a decision on December 12, his birthday. See you then!”
Adding to the tour speculation further, earlier this week, Spero posted a note on his Facebook that read, “This is a huge what if, but what if Dickey Betts decided to play 10 cities, what should they be?”
