Thread: Berry's Reaction to Duane's Death

paulw718 - 2/1/2014 at 04:48 PM

I will post this on both Duane's and Berry's board because it involves both of them.

It is about Berry's despair after Duane's accident. For all these years, I have read and heard all about how Berry became really depressed about Duane's death that he spiraled into a life of drowning his sorrows in alcohol and drugs until he had his own accident. It always seemed to me that even though he loved Duane and was devastated by his death, his spiral downward was rather excessive. In Gregg's book, "My Cross To Bear" Gregg said that someone told him that Berry didn't try to avoid the bus and just rode straight into it. Gregg then said he felt Berry didn't want to die, he felt that Berry just didn't want to live anymore. It didn't hit me then but it just did.

What was Duane doing when he had his accident? Duane was going to his apartment to get the birthday presents for LINDA OAKLEY's birthday party. Berry's wife!!! Had it not been for Berry's wife having a birthday, Duane would not have been on his motorcycle at the intersection of Hillcrest Avenue and Bartlett Street that fateful day.

I think Berry felt GUILTY about Duane's death. I think Berry felt that his wife's birthday was the reason Duane died. Why else would he spiral so far downward. I now believe this is what was behind Berry's path to his accident.

I would appreciate anyone else's thoughts on this.

I don't think it's that, so much as Duane was the brother Berry never had and loved him like a brother. Brotherly love runs pretty deep, ya know.

I really believe that guilt played a big role in BO's accident. He just had gone through the 1st anniversary of Duane's death and, as many people try to point out, he was starting to move forward. Feelings of guilt will make a person feel that they don't deserve to move forward when the person who is gone can not. If you look into Berry's behavior after Duane's death and for the year and 2 weeks afterwards, there is more than just grief. Trust me. Think about it. Do some research. When I get a feeling about something in the manner in which I got this in my head, I am, pretty much, always right. I am convinced that guilt played a big part in BO's death. I mean, I loved BO and the ABB. I am not, by any means, saying this with any malice of any kind. There were just some things that never quite added up.

And...to use your words, "Duane was the brother Berry never had and loved him like a brother." Well...all the more reason to feel the guilt. Someone he loved so dearly was gone because he(Duane) was on the way to get BO's wife's birthday presents.

So...even though it may seem out of left field for me to say this, if you really look at all the evidence, it JUST MAKES SENSE!

They are resting in peace! My bringing this up is NOT doing anything to change that!!!
It is something that I figured out and I thought I would share it with the forum and get some of you out there thinking. Apparently, people here are afraid to open their minds to new ideas.
