Thread: Derek's solo on "Rockin' Horse" 9/2/2009

I'm listening to the Brothers show from September 2, 2009 in Chicago. During the first set the Brothers play a blistering "Rockin' Horse". At about the 9:30 mark in the song, Derek plays another one of his blistering solos. The solo, and the rhythm part Warren and the rest of the band play, don't sound like "Rockin Horse" at all. In fact it sounds like a completely different song. While at the show I thought this was a new song until they came back and finished Rockin Horse. Maybe some of you have this instant live cd, went to the show, or are more familiar with Derek's solo work than I am. I want to know if this part of Rockin Horse is indeed a different song entirely or simply some great improvisation by the band at the moment. Thanks. Happy New Year to all.

If I'm not mistaken, the band performed the song this way for the first time at Bethel Woods at their first show of Summer Tour 2008. They have been doing it this way since, with the key and tempo changing completely for Derek's closing solo. I do recall the song being performed the "old way" at Mountain Jam this past summer, however...

I don't know if its another song or not, but I can point you to another few instances that are out of band like that, but incredible. In fact, its my favorite derek trucks jam.
