Thread: Fri 3/13...feelin' lucky?

gondicar - 3/14/2009 at 12:06 AM

Ok, moogis is up and running...who is this playing Liz Reed that have have as filler at the moment? It is smokin'!

Ready for night #4!

gondicar - 3/14/2009 at 12:17 AM

Opener predicitons?

Aside from Little Martha (which they ca do every night as far as I am concerned) so far we've had Don't Want You No More>It's Not My Cross To Bear, Ain't Wastin' Time
and Trouble No More. Would love to see a Whipping Post opener, just to set a Friday the 13th kinda tone.

bob1954 - 3/14/2009 at 12:21 AM

I'd guess Midnight Rider for the opener during the Duane tribute slide show.

Hehehe

Mine is working fine as well. Not to sound like those annoying help desk people but try restarting your computer.

JimSheridan - 3/14/2009 at 12:46 AM

I love how at the Isle of WIght, Miles Davis's band play a 37-minute jam, and when asked what to call it, Miles grunts "Call it anything," and on the DVD credit, the song is listed as "Call It Anything"!

dhatch - 3/14/2009 at 12:46 AM

I just signed up and i have to say this is the coolest concept. I hope more bands do this! Lights are out, beer in hand and speakers are UP!!!!

CHUCKLINDSEY - 3/14/2009 at 01:40 AM

Loan Me A Dime--agreed if Boz is in the house tonight! Duane really wailed on that one! I expect to the the Juke's back again this run. Always dug the way Loan starts off slow (as in Free Bird) and ends on fire!
Also loved Duane's work on BB King Medley of that first Anthology record. Just maybe later....

darencole - 3/14/2009 at 01:42 AM

If they play 'Loan Me A Dime', it would also be great to have Jimmy Herring.

redd1 - 3/14/2009 at 01:46 AM

Duane had said of his work on this song with Bozz originally that it was 'cats tryin' to get off on stuff that couldn't be gotten off on', maybe at that time he wasn't gettin' off on it, but Derek sure has proven it can be gotten off on, and I think Duane would be smilin' seeing what Derek did.

Welcome Big Dave! I'm just joining the 2nd set...

Gotta catch the 1st set tomorrow or maybe tonight.

I waited a pretty long time after the show last night, but the link never came up. Anyone know what time after the show that it becomes available to play?

Conga Pete

a.k.a. TRP or 11/8 or ...

wp--wow!!!!! goodnite boys & girls--loved sharing it with equally crazy looney fanatic freaks of ABB--a great nite

gina - 3/14/2009 at 03:22 AM

That is the closest to the original version with Duane of Whippin' Post I have ever heard. What is also remarkable is that Gregg has finally given himself the permission to be happy, he sang "nothing seemed to change, the bad times stayed the same", putting the misery in the past. Now when they do that song, the can play it with the passion and the pain they have lived thru but still be able to have risen from the ashes like the Phoenix and be happy and still be respected bluesmen.

sheep - 3/14/2009 at 03:31 AM

Tremendous show tonight!! I love the horns, it took the band up and got them in the groove tonight. All night it kept getting better. If I wrote a fantasy setlist, it wouldn't be what they played tonight, but they got everything out of every song they performed tonight. Completely locked in. Derek was really on his game, a lot more than last night. Everyone was tonight. The interplay between Warren & Oteil in Whipping Post was unreal. One of the best versions. I love that first part of Warren's WP solo. There was some serious stuff going on there. Dereks solo in WP was amazing also. Loan Me a Dime, worth the price of admission alone.

My Review for Tonight's Show:

3/13/09 Review by gina
They opened tonight with Midnight Rider, which is their theme song, even though if you asked most people they would say Statesboro is their theme song. Midnight Rider is about hope that against all odds, one can prevail. Recognizing that no matter what happens in life, the road goes on forever, you just have to have the courage of your convictions to keep on and evolve as you go along. The band has done that. Throughout the years and incarnations there have been many times people have said is this the end of the line for them? They refuse to give up on preserving the music as an art form. They revamp the songs and re-create the music in ways that keep people coming for 40 years.

They continue with old standbys and invite people that they have played with over the years to come together to celebrate their heritage and their heartfelt commitment to the blues. Southside Johnny’s Juke Horns accompanied them tonight and it was great. Gregg said many years back that Duane wanted to get some horns in the band, but back then they could not afford to incorporate anything like the Memphis Horns, even though that’s the sound they love for it’s soulfulness. Boz Scaggs also joined them tonite, Duane played with Boz in Muscle Shoals on one of the songs performed tonight, Loan Me A Dime. Duane had said of his time in Muscle Shoals that he was disillusioned much of the time because he was there as a sessions man ‘tryin’ to get off on stuff that couldn’t’ve been gotten off on’, yet many of us still loved what he did during that time. Tonight Derek was at the helm and he was fantastic doing what Duane would have done if he was here playin’ tonight. Even Butch got up and gave a standing ovation to Boz Scaggs and the entire band clapped for him on the outcome of that song. Beautiful.

Another bright spot of the night was Gregg singing the Bobby Bland “Ain’t No Love In the Heart of the City” with the Juke Horns, the sound was great. Passionate homage to the blues and to Duane too.

Oteil had a nice solo on That Same Thing, and even though they have done this during this Beacon Run, it is different each night, the horn section was smiling at Derek for his work on tonight and deservedly so.

Warren took the first break on No One Left to Run With and and shines on it with his slide work. People have criticized Gregg’s vocals, my only critique would be that the range he sang the song in, seemed a little unusual. Otherwise he has been consistent and right on target with his vocals throughout this run. Derek also had a nice solo.

The encore on Whippin’ Post was phenomenal. It is the closest version to the original version the band played with Duane I have ever heard. What is even more remarkable is Gregg’s evolution. He has finally left his bad times past behind him, singing “nothing seemed to change, the bad times stayed the same” note the past tense, seemed and stayed; meaning he ain’t there anymore. For many years he sung in the present tense “nothing seems to change, the bad times stay the same” because his songs are a reflection of his life, and until now, it was all Whippin’ Post. Now he can be happy, he has risen like a Phoenix out of the ashes to the highest accolades possible. Knowing that the road does go on forever and not only has he arrived intact, but that the fans that brought him to his stature, will be there with him on that road till time is no more.

awesome tonight....someone posted that the second song of first set was Sick & Tired..by Ronnie Hawkins...not sure..just saw it posted...Lovin' my moogis seat...Peace,

fensranger - 3/14/2009 at 04:59 AM

just walked in, what an evening of music, first time in probably 20 beacon shows that i caught the horns and what a night, southbound into the mystic and loan me a dime.

nobody left to run with after an unbelieveable version of the same thing and wasted words.

then to top it off whipping post with some of the best guitar I have ever heard. Oteil is incredible. what a night, even bruce willis blew it out on harmonica

stilll have 3 shows left to see but this was one for the ages.

sixty8 - 3/14/2009 at 05:42 AM

Sensory overload to the joy section of my brain!!! Seriously, I'm not sure how many nights of this in a row I can watch before my head explodes. Another jaw dropping unbelievable show.

Just when you think they can't get any better they keep taking it to new levels. The Juke Horns were sweet and very involved. Boz Scaggs was awesome, and much to my surprise Bruce Willis kicked some major butt on the blues harp. Wow!!!

I thought Warren was gonna blow the roof off the Beacon during the new instrumental.

I am so thankful to Butch for making Moogis possible!!! To be able to experience the whole run in such crisp fashion is just amazing!!! Much more worth it than just seeing one more show in person. Now we get 15 nights of joy and can relive it as much as we want for 6 months. Hope my brain is intact after tomorrow night.

That is what I said after last night. At this point I don't even know if they have a top!

Pete, you should hang out in the Moogis chat room during the shows. Commenting on the show is another difference from being there in person.

I'm watching this show for the first time today as I work on a paper. Personally its my favorite so far as well, and they're just now bringing out the Juke Horns for the first time. The band just seems to be flowing much better than the past two nights. I liked the first night a lot, but this is something else...That new instrumental is just phenomenal. I don't even know what else to say...I'm just so grateful for Moogis and everyone else here that obsesses over this stuff like I do.
