Serious music tonight. Buddy's solo in Southbound was huge - thought Gregg came in early w/vocals, Derek didn't get to solo on the song's round robin - that could have been beyond, like really. Fantastic stuff - Gregg's singing is animated and so strong. Awesome.

woodsdweller - 3/13/2009 at 03:07 AM

Sounds like it was a great night....Buddy Guy: WOW!!!!

dancingrhonda - 3/13/2009 at 03:07 AM

A really special second set. First was terrific; second is/was OUTSTANDING.
Derek killed on "Dreams", absolutely killed. Now a sublime "Jessica." Hate to overuse the superlatives, but this has been just beautiful.

bob1954 - 3/13/2009 at 03:09 AM

A fantastic show tonight. The band and guests are all incredible!

gondicar - 3/13/2009 at 03:10 AM

Everything is "on" tonight.

BigDaveOnBass - 3/13/2009 at 03:10 AM

Oteil is really groovin' tonight.

When's Boz coming out??

I'd say probably tomorrow Dave.

hotlantatim - 3/13/2009 at 03:11 AM

Wish Page had given the piano solo a shot on Jessica.

gondicar - 3/13/2009 at 03:12 AM

OTEIL!!!!!!

PhotoRon286 - 3/13/2009 at 03:14 AM

Got an email from the floor of the Beaco from a Skan. friend who's in the tenth row.

All it said was "outstanding".

I concur.

nyabbfiend - 3/13/2009 at 03:25 AM

"One Way Out" encore?

PhotoRon286 - 3/13/2009 at 03:26 AM

Time for a Whipping Post

gondicar - 3/13/2009 at 03:29 AM

Warren is reminding us that there is more than one great slide player in this band!

Leon - 3/13/2009 at 03:31 AM

KUDOS to the director....the timing of the camera shots is GREAT for live!

Derekfan18 - 3/13/2009 at 03:32 AM

this show was not there best.
The first night with Levon has been the best so far.

Nope...they are killing it though! Gregg sounds very strong tonight!

I actually liked Taj Mahal's stuff on the 1st night far better than Levon's.

I thought tonight was a great show and I'm by far not a Phish fan.

darencole - 3/13/2009 at 03:35 AM

This show & setlist sounds absolutely fantastic!

2old2boogie - 3/13/2009 at 03:37 AM

Butch - thanks for Moogis. Since I'm 2 old 2 boogie, I can sit at home in my pj's and watch on my mac laptop. Love the upclose shots - da blues r all right!

Leon - 3/13/2009 at 03:37 AM

talk about off the cuff!! Gregg biffed his cue from Derek...and Warren's trying to end it somehow....great to see that **** !

gondicar - 3/13/2009 at 03:42 AM

Set 1
Little Martha
Trouble No More
Leave My Blues at Home
Who's Been Talking (old Howling Wolf Song)
Black Hearted Woman
You Can't Lose What You Never Had
The Sky Is Crying (with Buddy Guy)
You Don't Love Me (with Buddy Guy)
Southbound (Buddy Guy/Page/Trey)

Set 2
I know You Rider w/Trey & Page
Liz Reed w/Trey & Page
Dreams
Jessica
Encore: Statesboro Blues

Second set was only 4 songs but went for an hour and a half. Great show boys!

Leon - 3/13/2009 at 03:45 AM

agreed, Tim. Warren is having a friggin ball up there - he's been practically dancing for 3 nights...

sheep - 3/13/2009 at 04:05 AM

Outside of Derek's solo in the Other One jam out of BHW, Derek's solo in Dreams and Oteil's bass solo, the show was flat for me. The band seemed discoonected at times. Warren wasn't doing it for me. When Warren stepped on Derek's slide solo in Dreams, it pissed me off. Warren wasn't listening or paying attention and he just takes over and plays the same slide riffs he always plays in Dreams, no creativity or soul. The best guest moment was Sky is Crying. Buddy did some nice Albert King guitar work. YDLM & Southbound were forgettable, as was Liz Reed. On an off night, this band still has great moments. I'm sure a lot of you will disagree with me, this is just my opinion and what moves me about this music. I want to see more creativity, more new and Warren taking some chances. The first night is still best of the three for me.

When was the last Who's Been Talkin?

redspruce26 - 3/13/2009 at 04:15 AM

I thought tonight had some great moments.slow too start, but their was some serious jammin' tonight.more beatles!that was awsome derek

bullshit - 3/13/2009 at 06:28 AM

I'm sorry if you did not like that show then why go. That was amazing.

jcb - 3/13/2009 at 06:44 AM

I'd give the first night the edge too, loved the MJ.

I really liked the lmb@h/who's been talkin'/black hearted woman part of the show. Way jammed out for the first set, and no guests. It was after BHW that Warren could be heard saying "we're jamming too much." Not that I understand why that's a bad thing

sixty8 - 3/13/2009 at 07:20 AM

Holy $hit!!! Just my two cents, but that show goes straight to my top four or five out of fifty plus. 'The Sky Is Crying' with Buddy was worth the price of admission itself. The interplay between Warren, Buddy and Derek was absolutely amazing. At one point Warren and Buddy had one of those chill up your spine moments and they both had smiles from ear to ear. I thought the band was as tight as can be tonight, I mean last night. LOL! We got the 'Little Martha' opening which was very cool. 'Southbound' was off the hooks.

The only miscue I noticed all night was Gregg coming in too early during 'You Don't Love Me'. It was a natural mistake as he is used to coming in after two solos instead of three. His voice is as strong as I have ever heard and he was very animated. Mitzi would have passed out during the first set with Gregg letting his hair down.

Both Warren and Derek were on fire from beginning to end and were both obviously having a blast, especially with Buddy. Then the ending run of 'IMOER', Dreams, Jessica, and 'Statesboro' were awesome IMO!!!!! WHAT JAMMING GUITAR WORK!!!!!

Not a good show IMO, a great show IMO. I wasn't there for opening night but was blown away by it on Moogis. This show to me was just as good, but like I said I was not at Monday's show. I think whoever said that last night's show was flat is crazy! The crowd was absolutely bonkers, tons of energy and the band was feeding off it. To me it felt more like a Saturday show. Sorry if some don't agree.

My only disappointment was with Trey. He wasn't bad, but nothing special and a bit underwhelming after Buddy. I don't think he brought his A game to the table which is something you better have when you take the stage with Warren and Derek. Page on the other hand was very impressive on the piano.

Also great meeting Eileen1 and nypeachhead. We were BSing about the first set and didn't realize the Brothers were already into 'I Know You Rider' on stage. LOL! We then scrambled back to our seats.

This show smoked!!!

lolasdeb - 3/13/2009 at 11:55 AM

Some excellent shots just posted there! For me, this show just smoked ... amazing, amazing and another reminder of why I go see these guys live every chance I get even after 40 years (which - lucky me, thanks Butch, my chances for live shows have been happily increased due to Moogis this year). SMOKING!!!

WarEagleRK - 3/13/2009 at 11:58 AM

I wonder if Derek wore the Junior Wells "Hoodoo Man Blues" shirt as a tribute to the "Friendly Chap" who was sitting in with them last night?

I thought the band was loose as a goose and feeling good, and you could feel it in their playing. The intensity of the first set, the jammy feel of the second set - egggzellent. And Gregg was so animated, rocking out, and really singing, extending those notes, better than I have heard him in years -

NYCScammer - 3/13/2009 at 03:24 PM

I posted this in Anthing Goes. I'll post it here and go and delete the other.

I agree that In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was outstanding, but my song of the night was Southbound. I thought the band and the guests really came together on it. I was in the Lower Bacony Row A and the music seemed much louder (not in a bad way) then in years past. Anyone agree? Also, I noticed Oteil is wearing shoes and doesn't have his carpet. Can't remember him doing that, at least not at the Beacon. Does anyone know why the carpets gone? The place looked great and the sound was awesome so I have to give Dolan some props for that. Security was definately heavier but some 'Beacon Traditions' still went on. Only saw security once ask someone to stop. Great night as far as I'm concerned. Gregg did have his hair down and even donned glasses for a bit in the first set. My group, growing older and in full understanding got a good chuckle out of that.

Be safe and see you on the 26th,
John

CM829NYC - 3/13/2009 at 03:49 PM

My friends and I were talking about Oteils getup. I think it is casual Friday at the Beacon tonight though. Maybe he will lose the shoes and don the tie dye........

OK, I'll have to give it another go. Thank you Moogis. Maybe it was the wine I was drinking?

I'd love to hear your thoughts again after re-watching (how great is that) and re-listening to the show. I thought the Liz Reed smoked and was a highlight for me, perhaps it was the beer I was drinking This was my first of 10 so obviously missed Mon. and Tue so perhaps it was that 1st night excitement for me, or the fact I don't have a recent show fresh in my mind to compare it (Red Rocks was my last), but man I thought the whole 2nd set was on fire. I did think the first set was maybe a bit uneven but I really liked the setlist so that more then makes up for it in my mind, and uneven may be a bit harsh because damn, how freakin' good are these guys. Too much fun.

rschwartz88 - 3/13/2009 at 11:19 PM

first post here,
I was at the beacon on tuesday for the first time. thought the show was amazing, blown away after seeing them before only at jones beach (which I also thought was great).
Anyway, last night seemed ridiculous after looking at the set list and reading some comments here. I'm a big fan of phish (I realize some here may feel otherwise, but after last night maybe there is some common ground).
I need to listen to the show so I really want to get hold of a recording. Can anyone offer any advice. Is there anything online? They don't have a post-show live download feature do they? Would I have to wait a few months for a set commemorating the tour? Does this fall into the "instant live" ban on trading? If not I'd be willing to offer some stuff... I could pay shipping/price for blanks, or trade some dead or phish stuff I have here...mostly released Dick's Pick's, Live Phish or similar.
