Thread: EC & Buddy

casinoboogie - 3/12/2009 at 08:14 AM

...I hate to be a spoiler....and I'd also hate to be wrong about this...but here goes....

I went to see my friend's band play at Buddy Guy Legends tonight in Chicago. Who was there but Buddy himself. Having cocktails at the bar, talkin' with a few younger ladies. He had a shot or two.....then he hit the stage. Played 2 tunes (1 on vox & 1 on guitar/vox). Unreal. Thank God I live in Chicago.

Anyways, ALLMAN BROTHERS RELATED MATERIAL:

I was standing right next to him by the bar after he perfomed & he said 'Yeah man, tomorrow night (03/12) I'm playing with Eric Clapton and the Allman Brothers at the Beacon in New York.'

.....nobody caught it b/c nobody in the vicinity digs the Allmans (except me!!). Nevertheless, unless this is a previously released rumor then I do believe I had some privileged insider info.

If this is old news my apologies.

Cheers,

casinoboogie

casinoboogie - 3/12/2009 at 08:22 AM

Hmmm.... after looking at other recent threads my guess is that this is new info....

....or else I am completely retarded and was hearing things tonight (from Buddy Guy of all people).

By the way, Buddy TORE IT UP on 19 Yrs Old. Then picked up backing band's guitar and played a solo that would bring a tear to your eye. Beautiful.

slidejules - 3/12/2009 at 09:22 AM

Looks like it's going to be another late night tonight over here in the UK! (and associated utterly unproductive day at work tomorrow!) :-)

MOOGIS!

1cdog - 3/12/2009 at 09:51 AM

How drunk was Buddy at the time?

I guess we will know the answer to that this evening.

BTW, Clapton played a concert Tuesday night in Melbourne, Australia. I guess it's possible but it does seem like a quick turn around.

dutchoneill - 3/12/2009 at 09:57 AM

Buddy Guy, EC and Boz Scaggs, that could be one hell of a night.

WarEagleRK - 3/12/2009 at 11:12 AM

If this happens, then Moogis would have paid for itself several times over at this point and it would just be day 3.

ABBcujo - 3/12/2009 at 12:23 PM

Can't wait to hear up to NYC tonight. First of many Beacon shows.

Have to get out a 2000 show and hear Loan me A Dime....

tedray - 3/12/2009 at 12:57 PM

EC finished up in Australia on Tuesday according to his website, so the Beacon tonight is a possibility. He's hitting Columbus with Steve Winwood in June, can't wait!

moemoe6434 - 3/12/2009 at 01:02 PM

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

billybarool - 3/12/2009 at 01:06 PM

Kewl!

Hope its true for the folks going tonight

Dorothyann - 3/12/2009 at 01:10 PM

What about the 19th???? (the date we were originally told).....argh! Of course my next tix are for the 19th and the 21st.

hmmmmmmmm (thank God for MOOGIS!)

TerriB - 3/12/2009 at 01:12 PM

Personally, I hope Clapton goes home to Ohio to see his family and get on US time and then shows at the Beacon next week, but I'll agree with Dorothyann and say thank God for Moogis!

lonomon - 3/12/2009 at 01:16 PM

well, it is possible as EC just wrapped up his Australian tour Tuesday nite.

Might be jet lagged, but who knows ...

Pretty sure he will be there next week ... on the 19th at least. But sure am glad I've got Moogis! (that Buddy/EC/Boz comment gave me shivers!)

TRMGDEAD - 3/12/2009 at 01:37 PM

I don't know how much I would trust a boozed up Buddy to be honest. I'm sure that he has someone who tells him where and when he needs to be at a place and he probably doesn't even pay attention much to where it is. I was thinking yesterday that Buddy probably would show up at the Beacopn at some point however. Whoever it is each night, the eacon shows are always a blast. I will see you all a week from today

TRMGDEAD - 3/12/2009 at 01:40 PM

I can spell "Beacon" when I take my time........

Put me down as a skeptic on this. Can't imagine him being far away and doing a good # of shows then immediately going direct to NYC for rehearsal then a show. Maybe Buddy meant Eric Frampton!

gibsonsg1275 - 3/12/2009 at 01:43 PM

This is going to be really interesting to find out what happens tonight. As of Tuesday night Clapton is done with his own touring obligations until the Winwood shows in June. So he could theoretically choose whatever Beacon date he wants and the Allmans would probably take him on any date that works for him. He said in his autobiography that the grinds of touring and his decreased tolerance to time zone changes were really affecting him in the 06-07 tour, so he might be reasonable to expect him to go to Columbus, get acclimated, then come out to NY next week. Plus, if we're assuming that he'll be playing several Layla tunes with ABB then it would be at the expense of the anniversary of the Fillmore East concerts, which seems unlikely given the Brothers' nostalgic theme for this run. So I feel it's more logical that he won't be playing with them this week.

However, this Buddy Guy comment definitely throws a wrench in that logic and my gut tells me that it's highly possible he will show up. Even if we hadn't heard about Buddy's comments, I've had a suspicion for a couple months that Clapton would play earlier than next week. WheresEric reported in January that the final Australia show was being rescheduled from Wednesday, March 11 to Tuesday, March 10 due to "a touring change" (http://www.whereseric.com/news/2009/01/eric-clapton-melbourne-australia-ma rch-2009-concert-date-change.html). Even if he were going back to Ohio for the week and showing up on the 19th/20th, there would have been no reason for him to reschedule Tuesday's show in Australia by a mere one day.

...Unless he had to jet back to New York and play with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon!

Either way, pure speculation but I just thought I'd throw out my thoughts on the matter and join in the fun of anticipation!

esaenter - 3/12/2009 at 02:05 PM

I am going tonight and next Thursday, so I have the Clapton rumours covered ;-)
I heard that Bonnie Bramlett might be there tonight along with Boz Scaggs. Whatever we get will be special - but Buddy Guy and Clapton would be sweet!

spiv - 3/12/2009 at 02:50 PM

that would be awesome, but I'd put money him confusing the two thursdays. Either way i'm excited, I'll be there tonight and the 19th. it's been a long time coming for this guest.

casinoboogie - 3/12/2009 at 04:53 PM

In response to the 'how drunk was Buddy?' question - he had three shots during one song. Three waitstaff girls came up at different times. And he already seemed pretty pretty tall at that point. It'll be interesting to see what transpires.

Or Eric Idle... I would love to see the ABB and Buddy cover the Lumberjack song.

GSpata - 3/12/2009 at 08:12 PM

I too was hoping for the 19th and 20th as I will be there for those dates along with the 21st, but whatever it is ...it is. Thank you Butch for Moogis as I won't miss anything.

revonah - 3/12/2009 at 08:56 PM

If you've ever flown from Asia or the South Pacific
to the US you would know the flight is brutal. a guy like clapton
is more likely to get some r and r in australia, or close
by, before jumping on a plane to play a relatively historic
gig. it's gotta be important, even in ec's mind.
i'm going with the 19th.

johnj - 3/12/2009 at 09:02 PM

it is the 19th . how do i know this? because i am going on the 19th so it has to be.............

Sometimes when you come off a 13 or 14 hour flight you're ready to go....I flew to Tokyo from Chicago in '05 and was in the air for over 14 hours and took a 2 hour train ride to Tokyo from the airport and went straight out again after checking into my hotel....had to eat that awesome Japanese food, which I know EC is a fan of as well. I think I was up for 36 straight hours before I crashed.

He is an experienced traveler. He knows what he is doing....

Shavian - 3/12/2009 at 09:11 PM

If I was a Melbournite with a ticket, I would be really pissed off if Clapton rescheduled just so that he could be at the Beacon on 3/12 when he has several other dates to be there.

I would be surprised if any artist would reschedule a show under these circumstances.

revonah - 3/12/2009 at 09:28 PM

australia to ny is like a 20 plus hour ordeal, if
it is non stop. not to mention, basically he
would be jumping off of a stage and into
a plane to nyc. an experienced traveler yes, a spring
chicken no. age takes its toll on "world travelers".
i do agree in some rare occasions people may make
a great comeback from potential jet leg. it is
still remote and why take a chance like that on
an important occasion like the ABB gig?

squabs217 - 3/12/2009 at 09:34 PM

Anyone checked the schedules of Warren Haynes or Derek Trucks ? They're my favorite guitarists . I just picked up a pair of Journey tickets because I've heard the two of them are going to show up there . I'm a huge Journey fan , but the last few years , their shows just don't cut it anymore and they had to bring in some star power . We Journey fans are pumped !

With any luck , Derek will walk out and take the solo on Open Arms (both fingers tightly crossed) . Rumor has it there will be a big finale that consists of Haynes , Schon ,Trucks , and Esteban on guitar . Liberace and Ray Charles on keys , Steve Harris and Jaco Pastorius on bass , Tommy Lee and Buddy Rich on drums .

I've heard from and inside source they're covering We Are The World and it's sure to be one for the ages . So they may step all over each other throughout the song , but so what ? I'll get to see all of those big names ... the music's secondary . I've seen them do plenty of quality shows and I don't care about that anymore .

Sound familiar ?

Tommy Lee and Buddy Rich on drums

FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND FROM THE PAMELA ANDERSON VIDEO TOMMY WON'T EVEN BE USING A DRUMSTICK

DanaVClouser - 3/12/2009 at 09:47 PM

It's being reported on NPR that tonites guests are going to be The New MainStreet Singers, The Folksmen, and Mitch & Mickey....gonna do a great 'acoustic' set from what I hear....probably "Melissa" and "Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley". A Mighty Wind is gonna blow, blow, blow!!

1cdog - 3/12/2009 at 10:54 PM

I heard Wayne Newton was guesting tonight and Wayne and the ABB were going to perform the long version of Danke Schoen.

casinoboogie - 3/13/2009 at 04:51 AM

Set list from tonight?

BIGV - 3/13/2009 at 05:09 AM

My barber told me today that tomorrow's show will just be a Phish show. Gregg will come out for the encore and sing Melissa. The fans in attendance will say it was the best Allman Brothers concert they've ever heard.

If u can believe it, that was the 1st set

They opened the 2nd set with I Know U Rider w/ Trey and Paige. Awesome stuff. Then all of them for Liz Reed which was off teh chart. It looked like Trey had practiced that solo for weeks. He was very impressive on this one. Once they left the ABB went into Dreams whihc was just fantastic and then Jessica which was extended big time. Encored Statesboro which was also extended and I probably am missing a song or 2. Overall it was one of the most powerful shows I have seen in some time. I mean they hit the gas and never let up. Greggs voice was awesome and Warren , Derek and Oteil were on fire. I dont know how they will top this one and its only show 3. Whew!

jonathanmatura - 3/14/2009 at 02:33 AM

I'm hoping for tomorrow nights. The Brothers haven't let me down yet at the Beacon.
