Opening with Little Martha was just devine! OMG, I was tearing up! That new instrumental has Derek written all over it!! Very Jimmy Herring "Lifeboat" sound and feel to it! I love it!

agreed, but I'd have loved for it to have been acoustic, not electric.

sixty8 - 3/10/2009 at 01:46 AM

Holy freakin' smokes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So much for having to catch their sea legs. They came out friggin' smokin' on all cylinders. Sue, I couldn't agree more about the new instrumental. That was excellent!!! That Oteil thing towards the end of 'Same Thing' was crazy good too!!! The ending with Taj was over the top!!!

The opening of the show was very touching the way they did it.

Even on my 15 inch computer screen and my Bose computer speakers it looks and sounds great!!!This is gonna be an amazing run!!!!!

dougrhon - 3/10/2009 at 02:49 AM

I'm sorry I had to miss the first set. But I will watch it later. This is an unbelievable show. If this is the first show what is the whole run going to be like? Mt. Jam already? Wow!

leftyblues - 3/10/2009 at 02:50 AM

Mountain Jam

suk0 - 3/10/2009 at 02:51 AM

not to mention there was a woman across the river somewhere in the first set also.

suk0 - 3/10/2009 at 02:52 AM

something really cool just happened in mt. jam. while warren and derek were harmonizing the theme they both played the same not at the end by chance and derek spun his around and smiled at warren. that was pretty neat.

This Mt. Jam reminds me of some of the old ones with Duane.

slowhand6 - 3/10/2009 at 03:14 AM

Moogis captures great angles. A new experience of watching them play. Kick A$$

Jpick - 3/10/2009 at 03:34 AM

My, my, my, Talk about hittin the ground running.... whoa, this is going to be "out there"
Even with my 15 inch screen and no real quality speakers this was beyond kick ass! Thank you Butch Trucks, how many times am I gonna say that over the next 3 weeks?
What are they gonna do tommorrow night, how about the next 14 nights, how do you follow this up? Taj Mahal, & Levon Helm in one night,
Somebody has to find out what that new instrumental was, sounded like Duane was sittin on sombody's shoulder for that one.
This was just way cool!

Anybody know who the guest drummer was, who slipped in for Southbound?

allmansrvvegas - 3/10/2009 at 04:40 AM

I think it was Derek brother Duane Trucks, not if I got is name right.

BrandonP - 3/10/2009 at 04:45 AM

Was it me or did Warren play a "Purple Haze" tease inside of Black Hearted Woman? Also, I was able to sit behind the SBD tonite and saw the set list. The "official" name of the new instrumental is..."NEW INSTRUMENTAL"

Shapeshifter72 - 3/10/2009 at 05:02 AM

yes it was a Purple Haze to Other ones jam

rpmvt - 3/10/2009 at 05:09 AM

There was another Jimi reference that Warren snuck in later... some Third Stone From The Sun, I think.

bama1324 - 3/10/2009 at 05:51 AM

Best opening night ever?? I think so!!

rpmvt - 3/10/2009 at 06:14 AM

I listened to Taj Mahal's Natch'l Blues on the train ride to NYC today, then he shows up on stage. Wow.

Still wound up from the show... Can't wait for tomorrow night. Never saw more smiles and looks of concentration on the faces of the band combined during a show. When Levon and everyone else was up there, wow again.

Security was very nice. I was patted down and the guard discovered a camera lens that would choke a horse. He looked at it and said OK. He found another lens stuck in my socks and said OK. He never found the body, but with a smile he said go OK and go on. I don't know what the current policy is for DSLR cameras, but I got my stuff in. Maybe he was relieved it wasn't a bottle, etc.

Just started going thru the pictures...

Here is a nice backlit pic of Warren. Brian was nice enough to give me a pick after the show.

I caught Susan and Derek embracing after the encore and enjoying the post show video on the big screen. Here is a nice silhouette of the couple.

YES!!!!!! Thank you!!!! I was sitting there and I heard it, but in the middle of the song just couldn't figure as much. Turned to the dude beside me, "did you just hear what that was??" He had no clue what I was talking about. A few minutes later, I was so frustrated trying to figure out what he played, I covered my ears and just hummed it over and over to myself, but w/ the actual tune still blaring away, I just couldn't get it.

THEN, I got on the train and started to try to remember, and by then had completely lost it.

THANK YOU!!!!! Now I can sleep tonight, instead of racking my brain to figure that tease.

First Beacon show ever for me. So awesome. Everybody can say what I say better. But, of the times I've seen the Bros. and Mule . . . for me, Warren has never been better than tonight.

And Derek on Mt. Jam . . . just sublime.

woodyrumble - 3/10/2009 at 07:08 AM

Gonna Have a Funky Good Time in the .44 by Warren in there too, as far as extra jams thrown in.

I'm not sure if I want to know where the body was.

PeachyMountain - 3/10/2009 at 01:18 PM

That show was sick. We were in the 9th row in front of Oteil. We got our Stormy Monday and the entire show was SICK...period! Security was very cool about the aisles last night as well.

Two absolutely fantastic photos....the one of Derek and Susan.....well...perfect. So, you said you don't know the policy on DSLR cameras....what about little digital cameras? I doubt I will be able to get a good shot from the Loge with our crappy little thing, but in the past year we've been able to get it into every show except an ABB show in Canandaigua. We use it to simply try to get one decent shot to put on our wall with our ticket stubs.

nebish - 3/10/2009 at 01:41 PM

Thanks for the complete detailed set list shapeshifter72.

rpmvt - 3/10/2009 at 01:49 PM

Body location - Ron -- good call. I've found that if I cinch up the strap and take the lens off, I can slip the strap over one shoulder and have it sit right under my arm and it kind of disappears under a jacket. The security guys rarely get their hands up in your armpits.

I don't think point and shoot digital cameras will be any problem. I saw them everywhere.

I'm loving that shot of Susan and Derek too. It was a really tender moment and it just reinforces what great folks they are.

Getting through some more shots now and they're fun. From my location, it was tough to see Warren some of the time and I could only see the top of Butch's head and headphones occasionally. Jaimoe and Marc - forget about it. Next week, I'll be close and in the middle, so hoping for some good stuff then. Tonight, it is up in Loge, so little possibility for decent shots.

It will be a couple days before I get back and unload the cards for some tweaking and clean up.

Gregg looked fit and healthy and sounded great - here's one shot:

rpmvt - 3/10/2009 at 03:11 PM

Just a couple more for now... Got to get some work done!

Taj put a smile on everyone's faces -

Here's Levon and a crowded stage!

Sweet pics!!!!!!

royalcrown - 3/10/2009 at 06:44 PM

Anyone notice Warren and Derek *both* playing Les Pauls on "Guilded Splinters"? I don't think I've ever seen that before.

Personally, I think Derek sounds better on the SG; it's a more fluid sound, and a better mix with Warren. But the bulldozer punch of those two Pauls was pretty cool for that one tune.

/rick

Angelemerald - 3/10/2009 at 06:50 PM

I agree with Peteman's assessment of last night almost completely 100 %. The band was GREAT. So great to see and hear them playing again. I loved every moment of last night. I love Taj and think he is a great showman. I loved his take on the old blues tunes. It was nice to hear them done a little differently from the usual take.

Can anyone confirm for me that the instrumental is a new one? I thought it was something I had not heard before, but someone is saying it is called In a Silent Way, and I didn't think it was like the instrumental they opened with last year but I get a little fuzzy on instrumentals.

The Beacon was beautiful last night. It almost hurt to see a few spilled drinks and to see a few people smoking cigarettes. I felt the crowd was good but they were allowed to go into the aisles and that made it hard for me to see so I had to move my 151 dollar seat to a place where I could actually see. If people were kept out of the aisles, then I would not have moved because I had a lovely seat.

Anyway, it was a nice experience mostly last night and it was so good to see every body who I see at the shows again. Feels like Spring/Allman spirit.

dadof2 - 3/10/2009 at 06:52 PM

beautiful pics

BrandonP - 3/10/2009 at 07:10 PM

NO JaBuMa last night!! Wouldn't taking a break this year from the drum solos.

tburg_mike - 3/11/2009 at 01:00 AM

Super pics!
Just got back from the city. Whew!
Most has already been divulged. Here's my additions:

-I was able to sit next to two other dudes who were also by themselves and we had a great time together. It totally made the show 10x better.

-Security was present but very loose I thought. The dudes in front of us (Row L Orch) must have blazed up 4 huge joints during the whole show and nobody said anything. Our usher was smiling all night and very helpful.

-The theater looks great. A little over top on the gold statues, but what the hell, it's NYC. Check out the ceiling if you're wondering where $40 million went. Lobby so packed I couldn't tell what had been done to it. Bathrooms downstairs got an upgrade.
-
-The show was amazing as noted. But there were some definite miscues that understandably happen opening night. Some of the early solo runs no one seemed to know who was up next. Derek "frowned" a couple of times when this happened. The rest of the band just shrugged it off.

-That said, this band is a powerhouse now. With Gregg in top form, nothing can stop them. I kind of felt the band saying to themselves, we can't stop this train now, we're too friggin' good.

-Derek has a new swagger that is welcome and overdue. He is not the #2 guy anymore. He's toured with Clapton and been on the cover of Rolling Stone since the last Beacon run and it shows in his presence. The weird thing he did on the Mt Jam solo was jaw dropping. Warren was awesome, but Derek took over from the beginning.

-Oteil was having a blast the whole night. You almost wanted to get a second bass player so Oteil can do more of his crazy **** .

-Oh, Gregg walked into the Beacon around 4pm through the front door of the theater to dumbstruck onlookers. The rest of the band used the side.

-The theater released a bunch of singles around 4pm.

-No early favorite in the new Yogi's competition. Bars over on Amsterdam were packed but not blaring ABB or busty partying bartenders.
-

Skydogj - 3/11/2009 at 06:33 AM

Best Show I have seen the ABB do

even if I was at home
;-)

csmart01 - 3/11/2009 at 11:22 AM

Oh what a night. The only bit of trivia I can add to what's already been said is Glenn Close was in the aduience behind us... and by the look of the smile on her face is a huge ABB fan.

I know this is late coming... But I didn't see a response from anyone else:

Butch has confirmed over on Moogis.com that it is the new instrumental that Warren & Derek have written, which is not titled yet.

Warren after 1st set.
