Thread: McCain pushes Woman in Wheel Chair using Portable Oxygen

Swifty - 9/10/2008 at 07:34 PM

quote:
When John McCain came to the Senate in 1987, he quickly got two reputations: a Republican who'd do business with Democrats on tough issues and an impatient senator who was often gruff and temperamental.

Back in Washington, families of POW_MIAs said they have seen McCain's wrath repeatedly. Some families charged that McCain hadn't been aggressive enough about pursuing their lost relatives and has been reluctant to release relevant documents. McCain himself was a prisoner of war for five-and-a-half years during the Vietnam War.

In 1992, McCain sparred with Dolores Alfond, the chairwoman of the National Alliance of Families for the Return of America's Missing Servicemen and Women, at a Senate hearing. McCain's prosecutor-like questioning of Alfond ó available on YouTube ó left her in tears.
Four years later, at her group's Washington conference, about 25 members went to a Senate office building, hoping to meet with McCain. As they stood in the hall, McCain and an aide walked by.

Six people present have written statements describing what they saw. According to the accounts, McCain waved his hand to shoo away Jeannette Jenkins, whose cousin was last seen in South Vietnam in 1970, causing her to hit a wall.
As McCain continued walking, Jane Duke Gaylor, the mother of another missing serviceman, approached the senator. Gaylor, in a wheelchair equipped with portable oxygen, stretched her arms toward McCain.

"McCain stopped, glared at her, raised his left arm ready to strike her, composed himself and pushed the wheelchair away from him," according to Eleanor Apodaca, the sister of an Air Force captain missing since 1967.

McCain's staff wouldn't respond to requests for comment about specific incidents.
But Mark Salter, a longtime McCain aide who functions as the senator's alter ego and the co-author of his books, said that, "McCain gets intense, and intent on his argument."
His blowups with senators often result from colleagues being accustomed to deference, he said.

"A lot of these guys aren't used to that," Salter said, so they get annoyed when a peer gets emotional.

McCain's presidential campaign has tried to use his reputation to its advantage; in an early television ad, McCain said: "I didn't go to Washington to win the Mr. Congeniality award ... I love America. I love her enough to make some people angry."

Swifty - 9/10/2008 at 08:00 PM

I didn't have time to put in a comment before but the rest of the article gives other examples of McCain's explosive temper.

DerekFromCincinnati - 9/10/2008 at 08:04 PM

Concerning temper, this is one area where McCain and Bill Clinton are exactly alike. LBJ ripped ass as well as Truman and others. Obama ios getting there as he is showing signs of wearing thin.

bigann - 9/10/2008 at 08:06 PM

Interesting.....the article is about a republican and one of the replies mentions examples of three democrats without commenting on the article itself. Deflection at best.

That is a very creative way of making McCain sound like a Democrat. Thatís a compliment.

Sorry guy the Obama reference is inflammatory and racist. Obama has shown zero sign of any kind of an emotional outburst. When you use the phrase "wearing thin" you are saying that blacks do not have the emotional temperament to be in government. Thatís not a compliment.

You should watch Birth of a Nation again.

Gregallmanfan - 9/10/2008 at 08:14 PM

He'll definitely lose his temper and nuke someone within 3 weeks of the inauguration. I bet North Korea ticks him off, but he nukes North Vietnam instead. Maybe Somalia. We should have a pool.

Ah, the age old democrat "let's shut down the debate by calling the opponent a racist" technique. Sorry, that went out about 1992... the same time McCain supposedly shoved the woman in a wheelchair.

What in the hell are you talking about?? The last thing I am is a racist. Do you really want to go there with me??

The phrase 'wearing thin' is now a slur against black people??

Well let's get to it- I've got a question for you- what part of the country do you live in, Swifty??

You have got to be f*cking kidding me. Are you on the Left really this f*cking wack?? You guys are losing it all over America right now.

This is simply an amazing phenomena going on right now. Truly crazy.

The fact is that it's well known what this kind of expression refers to and it's racist. There was no place or context for you to include Obama here. You decided to make an inappropriate aside. Just apologize and letís move on.

I absolutely am not getting this. I have NEVER heard the phrase 'wearing thin' used in any type of racist context and did not get that impression from Derek's post. I have used this phrase myself often (usually when referring to my own mental/emotional state) and not once have I used it with any thought of racial overtone.

So...If I said, "Ann is wearing thin."

I'd get blasted right off this damn board!

I learned all the additional knowledge I can bear for today. First, "wearing thin" and now ^nn, since it is a slur I coded it to get it past the filters.

This race Sh!t is just ridiculous - Is Swifty really Al Sharpton?

SmilingJack - 9/10/2008 at 09:28 PM

I do like people who get emotional-all kinds of emotions. I like even better when the person has control of their emotions.
examples from both sides:
McCain is known as a hothead and would harm himself if he loses control during the campaign.
Obama is known to get in trouble when he gets hot over an issue and lets his mouth get ahead of himself. A much better controlled speaker.
So, either could yet shot themselves in the foot before the election is over.
I wish political ads, including local issues here in Denver, would talk about what they are for instead of trashing the other person. There are issues on the Denver ballot that I have to research because each side is doing a smear ad campaign against the other and neither even talks about what the issue on the ballot is!

LMAO!!!

Interesting phenomenon here (aside from the one Derek spoke to in his earlier post ). I totally forgot that the topic of this thread started out as McCain pushing a woman in wheel chair using portable oxygen and began thinking the subject at hand was racial terminology.

Folks just to clear one issue up. You have spent the last couple of days trying to prove I'm not a liberal. In fact you concluded I'm not. You need to find a new mental disorder for me.

The idea that certain groups do not have the emotional temperament to assume certain jobs and positions is very well known and wide spread. Most people who are knowledgeable about African Americans and minorities as well as women know this.

With anybody else I would have let this pass. But as old_time_fan points out you live in a community with over 50% African Americans and claim to be an expert on all the issues affecting their lives. Surely you would be aware of one of the most frustrating obstacles they face in looking for work.

It was the way it was used. There is no mention of Obama in the article. The article does show McCain pushed a woman away in a wheel chair. But Derek decided to focus on the potential for rage in Obama. There is a stereotype of the angry black man in the public mind and these types of men cannot be trusted to hold positions of power. In this case "wearing thin" suggests Obama is about to become an angry black man. It was a way for him to bring race into the discussion by saying it was inevitable Obama would turn into the stereotype. Derek knows what I'm talking about.

I guess its like when gay folks were called queers. And queer meaning odd and no matter how ya cut it,a man with another man in bed is a little odd.It didnt or doesnt make em bad folks at heart,,but it is a little odd for a man to be drawn to another man.Least IMHO it does. And to each his own right ?
Then they wanted to be called gay, which is kinda weird.I always thought from watchin movies thru the years that gay meant happy,in a good mood etc.BUT society had to change to fit a mold right ?
I dont take offense if a black person refers to me as a white person. So why should they take offense to the phrase black person? I dont get it.
If some of ya'll wanna change your vocabulary to blend with every dern thing that comes down the pike, well then go for it.
Some things i can see are disrespectful and down right mean.Other request are just friggin BS
This offends me,that offends me,this might offend me 2 years from now, that used to offend me but now it doesnt .
