Thread: Humiliating UN Vote for Trump's Jerusalem Plan

2112 - 12/21/2017 at 10:46 PM

Despite Trump threatening any country that voted against him, the UN General Assembly voted against the US resolution 128 to 9 calling Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capitol "null and void." Even with Trump's threatening our own allies with what is essentially blackmail, he could only gather 9 votes.

This is clearly the most embarrassing US policy defeat in UN history and clearly shows how little respect the world has for the Trump administration, even when faced with the possibility of loosing millions of dollars in US aid. Trump has shown he has zero influence on the world stage and the US's status as the leader of the free world has been tossed in the garbage heap.

Little Donnie talks a tough game but most countries know he's completely full of sh*t. All they need to do is flatter his ego in some form or fashion and they know he's putty in their hands. I offer up three examples: Saudi Arabia, Russia, and China. He's been so played by all three of them at our expense.

Of course his easily fooled supporters here in America think he's actually the bad *ss he thinks he is. It'd be downright comical if his actions on the world stage weren't so dangerous for American interests abroad.

I personally think this is a bad idea, but Congress and our Government acts in ways I would not alot. This decision dates back 30 years doesn't it? Trump just pushed the issue, he didn't start it.

Starting to truly believe that the Mid East is a problem that will never be solved.

That said Israel has few friends in the UN - this vote is not unexpected. Majority by itself doesn't indicate vindication. Winston Churchill was perhaps the only politician who had his viewpoint c 1940 and he saved the world.

So yeah; Trump is a lousy diplomat. But Jerusalem in reality has long been Israel's capitol. That fact is not changing; the two sides at war there have been at war for centuries. Not Trump's fault

There is a reason that US policy has been what it has been for 50 years. Nobody is expecting Trump to magically create peace in the middle east. However, I do expect him to not embarrass the United States and prove what is already known, that he has no influence on the world stage. This is the first time that everybody knows that the US can't even influence our closest allies. It's a complete failure in leadership and a disaster for future prospects for US policy direction for as long as Trump remains in the Whitehouse.

The symbolic U.N. vote has no effect on anything.

The U.S. can place it's Embassy anywhere it chooses.

Every president since the 1950's has said they would move the U.S. Embassy in Israel and President Trump actually did it.

It is certainly a referendum on the strength and influence of the Trump administration. He did everything he could including threatening our allies. It showed nobody cares about Trump's threats and the world rejects Trump as leader of the free world. The implications of this vote are far more than where we put our embassy. Our previous presidents were smart enough not to waste US influence on something that means nothing to us. I'll bet Putin is laughing his ass off. It's all going according to his plan.

No. You are lying as usual. He has not moved the embassy.

Just like prior presidents he signed and will continue to sign the six month waiver stalling the move:

from fox https://www.google.com/amp/www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/12/06/why-trumps-p romise-to-move-us-embassy-to-jerusalem-is-so-controversial.amp.html

". . .Trump will reportedly sign, and will continue to sign, the 6-month waiver to the Jerusalem Embassy Act. That act essentially allows presidents to sign continuous waivers to stall the relocation of the embassy . . ."

For years you told us about how the rest of the world didn't respect Obama. It was BS, but that never stopped you. Now we have clear proof about how the rest of the world feels about Trump. Now 138 out of 147 countries vote against something he proposes and it is "symbolic". Not symbolic at all. It was flat out rejection of a weak and whiny leader. Yeah, tell us how much the rest of the world feel that Trump is a strong leader. We all need a good laugh every now and then.

But...but...but...China gave him their highest honor...and then voted against him.

All that matters is that there is a love fest between Putin & Trump. No other countries matter.

Putin voted against Trump too. Putin helped put Trump into office just for this rwason, to help make America look like a fool and boost Russia's standing in the world. I'm sure Trump will still continue to worship Putin though, because Putin is just the kind of dictator Trump longs to be.

Unable to make this symbolic vote matter the lefties are right back to the fake Putin/Trump conspiracy crap.
After all these months they still have no proof, no evidence and no documents and no witnesses.

just a few hours after the vote that means nothing U.S. did get a 15-0 vote by the Security Council to impose even further sanctions against North Korea.
That is a vote that matters.

The United States has no trade with North Korea, so voting for more sanctions means nothing. The only vote that mattered was China's and, while they voted for the sanctions, they have no intention of honoring them.

Meanwhile, Nikki Haley's threats to countries who voted against Trump's recognition of the Israeli capital have been pretty much ignored by those countries.

Wrong again son.
The sanctions are intended for the countries that still trade with North Korea. and China is already cutting off trade with North Korea.

Nikki Haley made no threats.
If the countries that voted against us want our money they will realize the President Trump does what he says he will do.

Saying the US will cut off aid is a threat. And the UN members said go ahead. Nikki Haley and Donald Trump are in over their head.

We don't trade with NK. Our vote was symbolic.

We can only ask China to honor the sanctions. If they say no, then what? Do we invade them? So, this was a symbolic vote.

You are correct.

What is our leverage over China - Military assistance? Keep in mind that China holds over a trillion $ of our debt.

2112 - 12/28/2017 at 08:35 AM

Interesting how Mule likes to call this a meaningless symbolic vote, yet apparently Trump didn't think so. Trump made threats and pushed hard, all for not. Whether a symbolic vote or not, it was of great importance to Trump to put all his political capital behind it, and the world just thumbed their nose at him.

nebish - 12/28/2017 at 04:36 PM

Yes, horrible idea to go all in on. Why for what? What does the US get out of it? Nothing.

Now I get that technically it was somehow passed with strong bipartisan support in Congress, so technically it is law. But the President is allowed to delay, which I think makes good sense.

Trump talks about middle east peace (right), yet taking this position so strongly only puts any kind of peace with the Palestinians further in jeopardy. I mean talk about being a deal maker! How you going to make a deal on this when you just enraged one side of the equation?

Congress should overturn the law they passed on this so the President doesn't have to sign the waiver. Now that would be something to bring to the bargaining table (assuming the votes and the will existed in Congress to do such). Sure Israel would be pissed off, but they going to turn their backs on us? I think not.
