What we know: Indictments, guilty plea in Russia probe

WASHINGTON --
Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling ramped up on Monday, with an indictment of President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman and one of his associates. Separately, former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos is pleading guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russians.
A look at what we know now:
WHO WAS INDICTED?
Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and former Manafort business associate Rick Gates were indicted on felony charges. Manafort was fired from the Trump campaign in August 2016 after word surfaced that he had orchestrated a covert lobbying operation on behalf of pro-Russian interests in Ukraine. Gates was a longtime associate of Manafort's and worked for the Trump campaign past Manafort's ouster. As of two weeks ago, Gates was still working for Tom Barrack, a Trump confidant, helping with the closeout of the inauguration committee's campaign account.
WHAT ARE THEY ACCUSED OF?
The separate charges against Manafort and Rick Gates contend the men acted as unregistered foreign agents for Ukrainian interests. The indictments also include several other financial counts involving tens of millions of dollars routed through offshore accounts.
The indictment lays out 12 counts including conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, acting as an unregistered foreign agent, making false statements and several charges related to failing to report foreign bank and financial accounts. The indictment alleges the men moved money through hidden bank accounts in Cyprus, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Seychelles.
The indictment accuses Manafort of using "his hidden overseas wealth to enjoy a lavish lifestyle in the United States, without paying taxes on that income."
WHO IS GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS?
George Papadopoulos was a member of the campaign's foreign policy team. He is pleading guilty to lying to federal agents about his dealings with several Russians who were offering "dirt" on Trump's Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.
Papadopoulos' plea occurred on Oct. 5 and was unsealed Monday. In court papers, he admitted lying about the nature of his interactions with "foreign nationals" who he thought had close connections to senior Russian government officials.
Trump aides have said he played a limited role in the campaign and had no access to Trump.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH RUSSIAN MEDDLING?
The guilty plea by Papadopoulos marked the first criminal count that cites interactions between Trump campaign associates and Russian intermediaries during the campaign.
Manafort's indictment doesn't reference the Trump campaign or make any allegations about coordination between the Kremlin and the president's aides to influence the outcome of the election in Trump's favor. The indictment does allege a criminal conspiracy was continuing through February of this year, after Trump had taken office.
WHAT DOES TRUMP SAY?
The president quickly tweeted about the charges against Manafort, saying the alleged crimes were "years ago," and insisting there was "NO COLLUSION" between his campaign and Russia.
As he has before, he pointed instead to his Democratic rival in the election, Hillary Clinton. He tweeted: "Why aren't Crooked Hillary & the Dems the focus?????"

I am actually redacting my response, which is probably a first for the Whippin' Post, from what I read today, they say Manafort applied for 10 passports and used 3 to go to different places. That's some serious stuff.

Doesn't it seem a little convenient that this happens now right after some authorities were showing Hillary and Obama in involved in that uranium debacle? Hmmm. Trying to divert attention and throw it back on Trump perhaps?

No. Nobody has shown Obama or Clinton did anything wrong. This is just the Republicans trying to deflect. The uranium deal was debunked a while back. Trump is going down. Hillary and Obama have not done anything wrong. Deal with it.

Sang - 10/31/2017 at 12:28 AM

Mueller has no reason to divert attention from anything...... but nice try. The only one trying to avert attention is Trump.

And those who actually listen to Hannity and those who swallow Trump. Do we know anyone like that?

Trump and the Trump News Network knew this was coming, so they timed the Fake News uranium story to divert as much attention as possible. Note that while the real news networks were reporting on the indictments today, Fox News was running a story on hamburgers. That should tell you all you need to know.

Pretty sure Daddy will claim he hardly knows him and that he didn't have a big part in his campaign or his administration.

Was watching a bit of TV last night. While CNN & MSNBC had panels & analysts dissecting Mueller's actions, there was Hannity going off on Mueller, blasting Hillary, and stating the real story was uranium.

I have a hard time believing that anyone would actually believe that.

OriginalGoober - 11/1/2017 at 01:02 AM

Hannity is doing what the media isnt doing when it comes to the kremlin, yellowcake, and clinton.

True, most of the media report the news instead of making stuff up. But, the Fox News sheep are easily lead I guess.

Did you enjoy their story on hamburgers while all of the other news outlets were discussing the indictments and guilty plea?

goober will claim fox got a scoop no one else had the courage to report.

Chain - 11/1/2017 at 06:04 PM

And just as exciting is the fact that Mueller, at least it appears, may well be inditing another scumbag lobbyist, the brother of John Podesta.

The lesson in all this, for those not watching the deflective crap on Faux news, is that foreign governments use both parties to sway US government policy. What appears to be taking shape is that there MAY be a shift in the Justice Department efforts at actually enforcing the laws that are designed to prevent such actions.

This should signal to those uninformed and ignorant morons who think this is actually a witch hunt and purely partisan that this investigation will go well beyond just Trump operatives. This investigation is just beginning and with any luck maybe Mueller will bring many of the shady characters in Washington down whether they are Democrat or Republican.

At the very least, Trump's shady money dealings from years back are now in legal jeopardy and members of his family and little White bigot Sessions may well have perjured themselves before Congress as well as lied to the FBI....That spells big trouble for this administration.

BrerRabbit - 11/1/2017 at 08:21 PM

Looks like US administrations have been playing both sides of the Ukraine civil war.

Indeed.....One more glaring example of just what a pool of slime Washington, D.C. truly is. Perhaps worse is that our current occupant of the White House, while professing to "draining the swamp," is so obviously doing exactly the opposite given the make up of his cabinet and administration, much less his campaign team.

Worse because his supporters don't seem to have the capacity to get beyond his rhetoric and look at the people he's placed in positions of power. It'd be comical if it wasn't so dangerous. They're being played for such fools, sadly....

Well that could be true. Most of what I read comes from people with sources in the intel community, they know more than the news people, but what they know often seems outrageous so the usual suspects (especially around here) will claim it is not true, even though it is.

Read up on the outfit you linked to. They are a small media group that admittedly gets their info from other out there groups. They have no contacts with any intelligence agency.
