Thread: Tipitinas Uptown New Orleans

absnj - 8/25/2009 at 01:10 PM

I am in New Orleans for work in October, and there is a Radiators show at this venue. Can you guys tell me something about the place, good or bad, that will help me decide whether to make the show, and If I go to make the most of it? I would need to eat before the show, and I don't think they serve food.

Went there once on my only trip to New Orleans in 03 for the Rads 25th Anniversary. I enjoyed the hell out of that place. Friendly staff, cheap drinks compared to NY, good sound and 2 levels to enjoy the show from. I stayed right on Bourbon Street. Ate there and then took cabs to the shows and back.

I remember having to wait a bit for cabs after the show. I would ask the driver who drops you off for a card incase you have to call for a pick up.

I'm jealous. Seeing the Rads at Tips is like Seeing the ABB in Macon or the Dead in San Francisco.

Go,you won't regret it. My first Rads show was at Tips during Jazzfest...good tip on getting a card from the cabbie, forgot about doing that in NO.

Tips is a great place...it has two floors...most of the time i go upstairs and become a rail bird...there is also a bar and a restroom upstairs...

eat before you go...and like what was said above..getting a cab back can be a pain some times...cab from the quarter should be around $15...sometimes there are food vendors outside...

also when you walk in there will be a bust of Prof. Longhair...and you are to rub it for good luck..........

also go to Frenchman St....this is best area...lots of bars with music and there is also a very cool street scene there...

have a great time

The long-time lair of Professor Longhair. Often attracted N.O. musicians when they were in town, when he was alive. Don't know any more.

Seeing a show at Tipitina's is a true New Orleans experience. This place has alot of character to it and is really a New Orleans landmark. Has a really cool feel and vibe to the place and alot of musical history has happened in this building.

You might want to go check out a restaurant that is not too far from there called Pascal's Manale. It is the home of the original New Orleans BBQ Shrimp. Not in any way similar to BBQ in the sweet or smokey sense; more of a tomato based, spicy, herb style sauce. Have a blast!

I did go to Pascal Manale's years back... my recollection was you got a huge bowl of shrimp in about a pound of butter...good eating with a price to pay later!!!

Sounds like I am going to Tipitina's...

I recommend Magazine st a few blocks up from tipitina's -- walk up and turn right and there's a whole row of restaurants. turn left & walk down four blocks & at 4801 is le bon temps--a plretty good club with live muisic in the back room -- check out http://www.myspace.com/4801magazine

the magazine st bus is good in a pinch, just take lots of quarters.

a lot of the mardi gras parades start at the corner that tipitina's is on, so it's a real popular place during the weeks leading up to mardi gras. There's also a good supermarket a block away.

Many great clubs in NOLA, Tip's is a classic. Go to offbeat.com to search for music, while you're there.

Tipitina's if great ... perfect venue to catch the Radiator's!!! I don't recall seeing any nearby restaurants the times I've visited Tip's but there are so many excellent places to eat in NO. Don't know where you're staying but chances are there's something close where you can catch a bite then catch your cab to Tip's. Great idea about getting the cabbies card, too.

mmmmmmmm - BBQ Shrimp ... heads on with a slice of sourdough to catch the juices and some dirty rice. There is a lot of butter in this dish (and I use beer in mine, too) but it's good stuff...

Word. This is a great old place with cheap booze and sweet acoustics, saw the Neville Brothers there back in the 90s. But you are in New Ahlins... Eat a good meal at a classic joint first, filler up.....
