Thread: NYE Tradition Lives On -Soul Stew @ the Fox!!

TerriB - 10/2/2008 at 10:50 AM

The Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival will keep the tradition alive with a return to the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta for New Year's Eve! There's no better venue or city in the country to celebrate the new year and we hope everyone can make plans to join us for our favorite concert of the year. Last year’s show was a musical feast for fans and musicians alike, recognized with a Jammy Nomination for “Live Performance of the Year”. This year we’re thrilled to announce very special guest THE SUN RA ARKESTRA! The legendary intergalactic big band consists of 15 musicians blending theater, ritual and music, led by founding member Marshall Allen. They’ve been pushing the boundaries of music for over half a century and without words to describe their unique sound all we can say is that this will be unlike any dTb New Years show you’ve seen!! Presale tickets go on sale through dTb Ticketing Tuesday October 7 at Noon EST. Public on sale will begin on Friday October 10 through Ticketmaster.

Brock - 10/2/2008 at 11:57 AM

Thanks Terri, I've been waiting for this news. You coming this year? I still owe you from last year!

Best seating chart(be sure to click view concert setup after bringing up Orch to view pit, which will be sold):

Sun Ra Arkestra = Awesome!

They might run some people out of the room, but I don't care What a double bill!

I'd love to see Derek sit in on "The Creator Has A Master Plan" but I don't want to get my hopes up too high. Just seeing the Arkestra do their thing will be enough for me!

Angelemerald - 10/2/2008 at 04:01 PM

If they did a multiple night show, that is where I would be this year.

Tarzan - 10/2/2008 at 04:06 PM

i was curios to who they was gonna get to open for them

but this will be one hell of a show

who are all the members of sun ra??

And miss the Mule? Ang, are you feeling ok?!

susea - 10/2/2008 at 05:19 PM

No she's not Brock and quite frankly, neither am I. We are really frustrated with the entire NYE run with the Mule and their ticket options. Everything is confusing and not spelled right out like the other bands do!

alanwoods - 10/2/2008 at 05:44 PM

Just reserved a room at the Georgian Terrace.

Have been the last two years. On nye 2006, I had seats right on the very first row right in front of Derek's rig. Of course, I heard Derek's rig above everything else, but I was just amazed at how much he does. And this is after seeing him dozens of times over the last 15 or so years. Just genius. Kirk and Kirsten were right behind me. Then last year, I was on the 4th row on the right and had a great view of Todd and the Count, as well as of Susan.

Having the Mystic count down the New Year... Where else would you (I) rather be?

jamgram - 10/2/2008 at 07:26 PM

I also booked our room at the Georgian Terrace today. Let the good times roll. There were several good shows the two nights before NYE last year, one being Tinsley Ellis. Wonder what will be happening this year? Too bad it is in the middle of the week.

Benjamin - 10/2/2008 at 07:37 PM

Had a blast last year, have to see if the budget allows for it this year.

Air fare ain't cheap...

jpfudd5 - 10/2/2008 at 07:55 PM

Sun Ra Arkestra sounds really intriguing!

bluedad - 10/2/2008 at 09:44 PM

I'm in.....

ruthelane - 10/2/2008 at 10:06 PM

I'm thinking about it. Would love to see SoulStew.
But, just how different is this Arkestra?

lolasdeb - 10/2/2008 at 10:11 PM

'Specially 'round the holidays.

However, I did book a room at the GT just in case.

RobJohnson - 10/3/2008 at 12:55 AM

"But, just how different is this Arkestra?"

Well, that depends

How different from Aquarium Rescue Unit, or Bitches Brew-era Miles? Not that much.

How different from the Osmonds or Hannah Montana? As different as it gets!

phillybob - 10/3/2008 at 12:58 AM

I just pre-ordered her new CD and I am going to win the free tickets!!!! yipppppppeeeeeee

lukester420 - 10/3/2008 at 03:00 AM

Oh man when I first read this I thought the Arkestra was going to be backing SSR all night, that would have been a trip. It might be good for the Akestra to run some people out after that NMAS crowd, not that they didn't kick ass last year but I could have done without that crowd with the condition I was in.

Rest assured, I was not asking about the Osmonds nor Hanna Montana. Just wanted to know how far out there they were.

HeathO96001 - 10/3/2008 at 12:14 PM

This year's NYE show (w/Sun Ra) sounds awesome!

absnj - 10/3/2008 at 12:58 PM

I bet I know who suggested Sun-Ra as an opener...

hotlantatim - 10/3/2008 at 01:57 PM

I just booked a suite at Ga Terrace for New Year's Eve (even though I live 5-10 minutes away!). Hopefully, my budget can swing it and I can host our pre-show party again. That's the plan for now.

Should be a fun night again on Peachtree Street.

HeathO96001 - 10/3/2008 at 02:26 PM

Great Tim! I had so much fun at your party last year!

If you are coming in from out of town for this show and get in a day early, you may want to check out the King Tut Exhibit at the Atlanta Civic Center.

thejahpaul - 10/5/2008 at 12:04 PM

wait the jag dude is a sun ra fan?

Brock - 10/5/2008 at 12:51 PM

Hophead - 10/5/2008 at 10:37 PM

It is Colonel Bruce who first exposed young Derek Trucks to the music and stage personna of Sun Ra. Bruce took me to see Sun Ra here in Atlanta in 1986 -- we had second row seats and I'll never forget the experience.

I'm sure most of you know that Sun Ra passed in 1993. It is a tribute to his skill as a musician and band leader that the Arkestra is still going strong 15 years later.

How appropriate for the Arkestra to open for the Soul Stew Revival! Just think of the 1,000s of folks at the Fox that night who will never have heard of Sun Ra -- they'll likely end up on Saturn before the night is over ...

More info here.

Better grab the rooms on both sides of you Tim in case the neighbors show up. Having Oysters this year??????????

Rusty - 10/6/2008 at 04:14 PM

Sun Ra (nee Herman Poole Blunt), is a product of Birmingham, AL (Fairfield, actually). His avant garde style of jazz and other extraterrestrial forms have influenced everybody from Frank Zappa to Col. Bruce. I actually got to see the entire original Arkestra with Sun Ra at one of the City Stages festivals. Not something you could ever forget!

Brock - 10/6/2008 at 10:54 PM

You lucky thing you! Best I got was Row D in the Orch Left Center and Row FF in Loge Left Center (these are for Timo & Socko). I've got some extras in Row D so keep that in mind if you're looking for tickets later.

TerriB - 11/5/2008 at 11:44 PM

Yes mam! You are due a year's worth of brewed interest! Good news indeed.

Brock - 11/17/2008 at 10:57 PM

A pretty cool story on the Fox's pipe organ and its drums. Be sure to click on the Related Topics, photos. The Phantom of the Fox is quite the character!
