John, I understand Sidney is from New Orleans. How in the world did he manage to save his archives when Katrina hit? He must have been on high ground, a little inland from Katrina landfall, or a little of both. I'd love to see some of his unpublished/undiscovered ABB photos. Might have to make a call/e-mail and see what he's got.

jdbs2 - 1/22/2008 at 08:19 PM

Dave,
Please let us know what you find out if you
contact Sidney.

I don't know the particulars of how he
weathered the storm. But he did mention to me that
he has "TONS" of unpublished ABB images.

THE PICTURE A DAY THREAD! #15

This week featuring the photography of Shelley Barberot.

Thanks Shelley for opening up your collection to me!

The Allman Brothers played a free concert Sunday in Audubon Park, May 17, 1970
on their 2nd visit to New Orleans. Jaimoe was there , but didn't play. A local musician
sat in on congas.

The ABB played earlier, Friday and Saturday nights at the Warehouse
where the 'Ides of March' was on the bill also.

John DuBois

The Allman Brothers at Audubon Park
New Orleans, LA. September 1971 [ ??? May 17,1970 !! - you were there!! ;-) - J.D.]
By: Hank Gernhauser

I was surfing the net and decided to see what was available on the Allman Brothers. Man, what a shock to see pictures from my past. I remember the Audubon Park free concert. It was one of many that the Brothers performed after doing all nighters at The Warehouse in New Orleans. It was always an extra special show when they played. Cause thatís just what they did, play, play hard, and play all night.

I believe the Audubon Park pictures are from the concert at the start of my senior year in high school. It was the September, 1971 concert that another picture is provided at the Warehouse that I distinctly remember Duane Allman marching up to the mike and saying, " We're gonna play some country blues; and if you don't like that, you can march your ass right out of that door over there."

And away they went; right into one of those epic jams. That night, they followed the Ides of March. Duane's gold Gibson Les Paul shown in the pictures is vivid in my mind; along with Dickey Betts' red Gibson version. They played many songs from their new album, Idlewild South. I recall all of the members singing Revival; cause usually only Greg Allman (and sometimes Berry Oakley) sang. What flashbacks.

Usually, whatever group played on the same bill with The Brothers would join them sometime in the middle of the night for a jam. Peter Green of the original Fleetwood Mac, John Cippolina of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Elvin Bishop, come to mind.

And inevitably, the word on the street the next day was to find where The Brothers would show up; because they usually did somewhere. I remember the Audubon Park and City Park shows.

And New Year's Eve became a ritual. The Allman Brothers became the thing to do in the early 70s for New Years Eve in New Orleans. I still have some posters I saved advertising the early concerts. I had a promo picture on my bedroom wall of The Brothers for their first album all sitting nude in a creek somewhere in the South. My Dad didn't think that was appropriate and tore it off my wall along with a Jimi Hendrix poster; never to be seen again. My wife uses that incident to sober me up when I shake my head at some of today's music with my daughters. But I just don't care for rap; I like Southern country blues.

The Allman Brothers were also a big hit of the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1970. There was a film crew there too. I would sure like to know if that footage was saved.

Thanks for the stroll back to my youth. I saw the Allman Brothers recently as they played at the two recent New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festivals. But I hadn't thought of those concerts in my teen years in the 1970 and 1971 when The Allman Brothers first hit the scene and became so popular in New Orleans. I've seen, listened and enjoyed many great guitarists. But I've never since seen two guitarists complement each other and so intertwined in the flow of music as Duane Allman and Dickey Betts were in those concerts.

It was so free and real. The appreciation of seeing them in the evolution of their artistic talent is a treasure to have witnessed. I can hear the music coming from those pictures.

Thanks for putting up the old review by Hank Gernhauser from New Orleans. I was a good friend of his brother Mike Gernhauser, we were in the same Drum & Bugle Corp. back in the old days. They had a great old house in the city on St. Peters for the older kids and a house in Chalmette for the younger ones. They had a really big family, the older brother Steve had the best record collection in the world! If I am not mistaken I think Steve still does some work in the preservation of New Orleans music.

Mike was always funny during the disco days he always resisted......love ya Gernny, you never caved in!

And is Dickey playing it here?

Yes, Duane used the SG for slide , Dickey gave it to him when he got an LP. Graham Nash's wife bought it for him years and years ago .It went to Gerry Grooms when Duane was killed, there's a good thread on Dickey's site in Forum-Anything Goes,Gerry Grooms..Like to see that SG In Derek's mitts, along with a lot of folks lol.

John, great pics.

I have a question for you: a few years ago, a few photo images circulated, where they had the date as 12/31/70 as well. Was this possibly a wrong date, or did the band play twice on New Year's? Obviously, the clothes they were wearing are different.

Finsky, When I got these pictures from the photographer,
Michael P. Smith, I questioned him about the dates.
He assured me that it was New Years Eve, 1970. He was
doubly sure about the time frame since he has his other
works documented by film roll number and dates in some cases.

The next closest show to that would be Nov. 7, 1970
when that played the Warehouse with Procol Harum.
To my knowledge the ABB has played back to back nights
at the Warehouse, but never a double show.

Thanks,
J.D.
