Thread: John McLaughlin Jimmy Herring

emr - 11/4/2017 at 02:11 PM

Saw them last night at Town Hall. As always Jimmys playing was great; and his drummer was out of this world with a hard pop tendency. But Jimmy was right when he backed out of the ABb. He does better under the leadership of others.

I almost cried when they played L Brers. Miss March circa 2010.

Johns first set was astounding; but the real treat was the last hour when both bands joined for an hr of Mahavishnu music. John still has that unique sound ( he played the double guitar a lot) and there is no one like Jimmy when hhe is playing off a second master guitarist

Nice, I have the stage left balcony for this Friday's show in Newark, I always wanted to sit up there.

I was there with Andy Aledort, second row in front of Jimmy and I concur with this review. Fantastic.

Watching this live...incredible musicianship...wow

I'm digging this live stream. Attending in DC next Saturday. My week begins with Oteil and will end with Jimmy. I have Bela & Abigale, Elephant Revival, and John Prine in between. I love this neck of the woods.

This is red hot music!

Oh yeah.

On the chat people were complaining about McLaughlin's tone. I'm loving his tone!

Nice. How high is the cost of living and how is the job market looking?

Was planning on going to the Ann Arbor show but couldn't get time off from work

Virginia is a mixed bag. In Northern Virginia, Central Virginia (Richmond Area), and around Lynchburg job growth is at about 20% or higher.

The rest of the State, not so much.

I just read an article in this morning's Washington Post that might interest you.

I work as an usher at The Cap - was there last night. Great evening of music! I agree....Jimmy in the ABB was not enjoyable for me. His solo set was pretty good, JM's solo was really good....then the whole crew together was smokin'. My brother took me to my first concert ever at The Palladium in NYC in 1976.....John McLaughlin and his band Shakti and Stanley Clarke. Can't believe that was 41 years ago :-)

Saw them in Durham on Sunday. What ever you have to do GO!

Saw this show last night in Portland, OR.
So, I guess if you're not very good, you just play as fast as humanly possible and people don't notice how bad you are?

Kidding!

This was one HOT show!! Every musician on that stage just amazed me! I ran into a bunch of friends...It was a room full of musicians, mostly guitar players, and jaws were left on the floor. So cool to see these folks play together. This show is not to be missed! I hadn't seen McLaughlin since '80 or '81 in Chapel Hill and his playing is still just as good. They also looked to be having a ton of fun on that stage. I even bought a t-shirt, which I haven't done in forever (well, not a concert shirt, anyhow, lol!)

This is an amazing tour, hopefully a sbd recorded compilation of the tastiest stuff will be released. Etienne Mbappe is an incredible musician, I was entranced by his playing. I was really knocked out by Jimmyís group too, listening to Jimmy and Jeff Sipe playing the early 70ís Miles stuff was such a treat. The Mahavishnu Orchestra sets are guitar nerd heaven.

The show at the Warfield in SF was recorded for release, same venue as McLaughlin, De Lucia, and DeMiola recorded Friday Night in San Francisco. It was Friday as well.

McLaughlin's double neck sold for $49,100, proceeds to a Palestinian children's charity that uses music therapy for trauma.
