Thread: Electric / Acoustic guitar players

jszfunk - 9/30/2017 at 01:31 PM

Not sure if the title of this thread is defined very well. I was thinking the other day of "rock" electric guitar players that show their acoustic side more than others ,and who are pretty proficient at both. I am sure a lot are ,but we might not hear the acoustic side of them to much since they're music might be more electric based.

Joe Walsh comes to mind first. I really like his work with James Gang and his early solo stuff.
Stephen Stills would be another. Warren Haynes, Dickey Betts, Martin Barree ,Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore.

I am sure I am forgetting some, any others come to mind?

And to your listing of Warren: he plays it a decent amount, but I don't think he's particularly good (relatively speaking) on acoustic.

Pete Townshend, Keith Richards, Mark Knopfler, Jorma, George Harrison.

When I caught Jorma and Barry Mitterhoff live in an old church it was one of the best acoustic shows I have seen .

Steve Hackett is a wild electric player who is a beast on classical acoustic guitar.

Jorma.

Jorma.
Garcia.
Duane.
Derek Trucks.
Richard Thompson.
Jimi.
Neil Young.
Steve Winwood.
Greg Lake.
Steve Vai.
Van Halen.

Pretty much any good electric player can rip on acoustic, and has recorded some great acoustic tracks.

I tried when I was 13, when my grandparents gave me an acoustic guitar, and I tried for a year. It hurt so much to play. I mean, the fingertips hurt so much, I gave up.
Eric Clapton

Chris was such a talent . Loved his playing. I am surprised there has not been more material released since his death. Maybe there isn't much left. Who knows......

I think I have given up hope on him making any sort of return to new music or live playing.
I like this little outtake from "It Might Get Loud" of him playing acoustic.

Actually it is probably the other way around... there is a reason most of the guys that "rip" or burn on the electric guitar rarely are seen playing acoustic..

I think Dickey & Warren have provided ample proof of their prowess on both electric & acoustic... There is a great show out there of Dickey/Warren & Woody performing acoustic at the RRHOF- outstanding. - Dickey is also an incredible acoustic slide player- probably the most under rated part of his game...

Keith Richards is another that comes to mind in terms of being equally adept at both types of playing.

Warren may not be a some classical master, but he is a such a tasty acoustic player. I love it every time he has one in hands. A few of my favorite examples:

Edwin McCain - Alive - with Warren soloing throughout:

ABB - Elizabeth Reed (obvious choice but one of the live ABB highlights of their entire career):
