Thread: Hot 'Lanta - Wikipedia May Need Correcting

One of the reasons I always question info from Wikipedia is that dumbasses like me can just say what I beleive and other dumbasses (or at least some) will beleive it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_'Lanta

From Wikipedia on Hot'Lanta...

quote:
...It evolved out of a jam session when Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts got the idea for the melody line.

Seems I recall Gregg has taken credit for writing this and putting everyones name on it.
Never heard anything to the contrary until I read the Wiki version.

Wikipedia is correct. I believe Gregg had the opening theme/idea. The story is they were jamming on it and took a break. During the break Dickey runs back inside as he is whistling the melody, "I got it!"

That is the story as I remember it.

With all due respect, if you actually believed Gregg wrote Hot'lanta I've got some swampland I'd like to sell you I can believe he came up with the organ intro, but the whole song? No way.

As far as I know, Gregg has never written an instrumental in his life, and I doubt he ever will.

Huh? "Whipping Post" is in the same key - A minor.
