Thread: AARP

Brock - 10/5/2012 at 05:20 PM

I just joined. Good lord, where did the time go?!

You can join at 50, and I had to do it to get a rental car discount, which more than paid for the $16 annual fee.

Ok fellow goomers, what other deals are out there?

Off to the early-bird buffet!

Hotels

absnj - 10/5/2012 at 08:13 PM

I used to use it at movies for a senior discount... then I started looking older and the young ticket sellers don't question me anymore. It may work any other place that offers senior discounts, but wants proof. I also used it (years ago) for a discount on AOL.

bob1954 - 10/5/2012 at 08:16 PM

I was a member by marriage years before I qualified on my own. But don't tell my wife I told you.

bigann - 10/5/2012 at 10:13 PM

We belong to the AARP motor club and they've been worth every penny we've paid them in dues. I've also used the AARP card at hotels to get excellent rates.

Dannyspell - 10/5/2012 at 10:19 PM

In traveling since I have retired I have certainly gotten my money's worth!!!!!!!!!!!!

piacere - 10/6/2012 at 02:04 PM

I had it for something once but I forget what the heck it was.

No kiddin'...

njpaulc - 10/6/2012 at 03:10 PM

I quit, when I realised they were a business rather than the advocacy group like they presented themsleves to be.

stormyrider - 10/7/2012 at 02:30 AM

never joined it - I figured you can't get something for nothing and somehow on the back end it would cost more.

I also was quite depressed when that card came in the mail

10% off hookers in Times Square

Nevermind, I heard that on Letterman.

It may not be true.

robslob - 10/7/2012 at 08:19 PM

I'm too arrogant to admit I'm 57, so I haven't joined.

emr - 10/7/2012 at 09:44 PM

Between AARP and AAA I almost alwys get a hotel discount somewhere. Hopefull Medicare will still exist when I turn 65 so I can get their supplementary insurance.

Re; Early Bird special, there is a web site in NY called Savored. Restaurants discount (and good ones) up to 30% based on what is less than prime time. Found myself eating Sushi at a local favorite on Friday for 30% off. It is what it is

Brock - 10/7/2012 at 10:38 PM

It took me a few yrs to warm up to the idea, but if you have a significant car rental or hotel expense coming up, I'd recommend it. You can join online and I had my membership # immediately to use for the car rental. Can't turn back the clock; might as well save some bucks.

DreamsLady - 10/19/2012 at 10:20 PM

As mentioned, hotel discounts, car insurance discounts, health insurance (for those on Medicare who need supplemental insurance - which is everybody), "road and tow" - which is AAA, only cheaper, life insurance.
I resisted for 9 years until I recently moved. The savings are worth it. They ARE also a powerful lobbyist group - don't kid yourself - their presence in Washington is huge.

lolasdeb - 10/19/2012 at 10:44 PM

I joined as soon as I became eligible 8 years ago and have used it frequently for hotel/car rental discounts. And as DreamLady stated - they are a powerful voice - it's always nice to have a champion.

Ditto!

And, have saved quite a few bucks on hotels (the car rental discount is good, too; but, I get a deal through work that is a little bit better, so I haven't used it that much)

Not true. Times Square was cleaned up years ago, and the hookers moved to Murray Hill. I am not sure about the 10% part.

Brock - 10/20/2012 at 02:28 AM

Funny this came back up today, as my membership pkg just came. Here's one that appeals to me:

AARP members save 25% or more when buying tickets in groups of four.* Visit www.livenation.com/aarp for complete details and to see what concerts are available in your area. Have your AARP membership card number ready!

Hey you kids, down in front!
