Thread: Ok, the Allman Brothers Band...

porkchopbob - 8/16/2010 at 02:22 PM

I haven't been around here much lately, and here's why: an animated tribute I made of everyone's favorite 40-plus year old band. Enjoy.

Thank you!

That is OFF THE CHARTS!!!

Can't imagine the work involved... and all the references to various songs (Liz Reed tombstone, Dickey born in the backseat of a Greyhound, Duane fishin', etc.)

That's destined to go viral... you're talented and perceptive.

Thanks again and peace,

Rob

Thanks again, y'all. Got the idea while waiting for one of the 40th anniversary Beacon shows to start and have been working on it when I have had the chance ever since. Seems like ages ago, I'm glad I got it done before their 50th anniversary. The song and album references were a lot of fun to do, whole project was a labor of love. Glad everyone digs it.

Yeah, I've always been fascinated by the evolution of some Allman Brothers songs over the years, but "Statesboro Blues" hasn't barely changed at all. When I was cutting the different versions together for the soundtrack I was surprised how seamless it went from era to era, player to player.

Yes sir it really does have a nice flow through out. I also like hearing how Greggs voice mellowed through the years. Again, Kick A$$ job!

Brightboy - 8/16/2010 at 11:12 PM

Yes, indeed. A lot of hard work, talent and love went into that project.
What is also evident is the great ABB sound throughout several eras and permutations/incarnations.
A fine tribute all the way around.

Between working full-time and going to graduate school part-time, this took a while. I got the idea for it while waiting for the band to take the stage for one of the 40th anniversary Beacon shows last year in March. I edited the soundtrack in April 2009. I story boarded it in May 2009. It took about a year to illustrate all of the elements in Adobe Illustrator and build the animatic, working on it hear and there, now and then, in between class projects, work and life. It really kind of snowballed, especially the middle section with all of the song and album art references. After a months away from it, I started animating it furiously this past May. Honestly, I never thought I'd finish it, but I couldn't stop myself. And from all of the wonderful feedback everyone has given me, I'm so glad I kept going.

bluesguy - 8/17/2010 at 04:30 PM

Butch just gave it a thumbs up too ...

claretkid - 8/17/2010 at 06:23 PM

After all the hard work you put in, i thought it would be very rude of me not to offer my congratulations too. A fabulous piece of work, that had me laughing one moment (Gregg's hair tickled me), and shivers down the spine the next (Little Martha intro). I've forwarded it onto several friends, and now am tying to figure out how to download it, so i can burn it onto a dvd for home pleasure. If that's not going to offend you of course.

Absolutely great stuff sir. A+

PCB,

That's a really great piece of work. Fun and interesting to watch. I'm glad to see someone post something positive for everyone to enjoy. I picked a good day to come by for a 'visit'. A nice change from the negativity I've seen run rampant in the past.

I know this took you a long time, but have you thought about doing more? Maybe the band (or other bands) will hire you to do videos or promo's and such. Not a bad way to earn a few (or lot of) bucks.

skyponydogboy - 8/17/2010 at 08:26 PM

And why is Dickey's blocked out during his slide part. Just askin'.

Hi lespaul58, glad you dig, but I hear ya, I know those shots are quick but I tried to fit in what I could. I guess it was an editing decision, the pacing of the audio kind of dictates what goes where and how fast sometimes. I did the soundtrack first and Dickey is probably represented on it more than any of the guitarists, however, his solos come in the latter part of the song when I added the references to other songs and album art. I think if I gave anyone the short end of the stick it was Allen Woody, but with so many players it's hard to fit everyone in.

jparrish610 - 8/18/2010 at 02:11 AM

Thank you VERY much for your work on this and sharing it with us! It's entertaining on many levels. I found it fascinating how the various iterations of the band meshed but in a distinctive patchwork way.

Only a true fan could produce something like this!

hughduty - 8/18/2010 at 03:53 AM

Thanks again for all the work you put into this project & for sharing it w/us.....This most defi. needs to be in rotation at the Big House.....it get's even better every time i watch it...just an amazing piece of work...

I don't post that often, I just enjoy reading all the posts in here, so the fact I felt moved to immediately post a reply should say how much I loved this.

Outstanding....standing ovation for you.

Bessie.Smith - 8/18/2010 at 11:40 PM

That's adorable! Just great--congratulations(saw Duane fishing in there). I like how it's not linear; the past and present are mixed up together. It captures one of the things I love most about listening to the ABB.

bird72 - 8/18/2010 at 11:51 PM

It was cute
then it was intriguing
then it was interesting
then it was memories
then it went on a journey
in the end it was majestic
until Little Martha
then it was touching

damn good job...............

great idea

TanDan - 8/19/2010 at 12:11 AM

Amazing stuff!

ThePeteMan - 8/19/2010 at 12:17 AM

All the details you brought into this, Brett, it's just really special. Love the birth in the backseat, everything in Rose Hill... But I actually got most choked up when Gregg is up on the mountain to see what he can see, and then the mountain crumbles beneath him. Made me think immediately of all the loss and sorrow Gregg has endured. But then the music sweeps everything back up, and the road goes on forever. SUCH A GREAT JOB, man. Thank you for making this.

That was really cool. I teach art. I'd like to share this with my students. Even though most of them will not understand the references, I believe they will be inspired by the creativity, concept, and execution. Thanks for sharing.

biodtl5 - 8/19/2010 at 07:19 PM

PCB I'm curious, how many hits has your animation gotten? It seems half of my facebook friends have shared the link and we have a thread going at the Mule Army site with the link posted.

RyanBelair - 8/21/2010 at 01:56 AM

Finally got a chance to watch this again tonight away from work, enjoyed it that much more.

I certainly hope the band uses it pre-show and/or during the intermission of their concerts. Too cool to not share w/ all Allman fans. Further I hope the band hooks you up with some VIP ticket package to a concert of your choice or something of the sort for your outstanding/hard work and creative vision.

That was absolutely incredible. I did not know that such talent existed among us. Thanks for sharing that with us.

porkchopbob - 8/24/2010 at 02:50 PM

Thanks again to everyone, believe me I've read every post here, I never thought the animation would get this kind of response. I've also heard, first-hand and second-hand, from a few people within the band's circle, and I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that they have gotten a kick out of it too.

biodtl5, as of today the video has gotten about 7800 hits. Blows me away. Makes me very happy that I could put a smile on a few peoples' faces.

Y'all are the best!

hotlantatim - 8/24/2010 at 03:02 PM

My favorite part is when you show the two shots from At Fillmore East and then focus in on Gregg laughing. Before you know it, it has segued into Gregg singing on stage. Perfect.

Love the "Country" sign too.

Thanks, man, I tried to sneak in as much as I could. I think there are about 15 or 16 songs referenced and 10 album covers, maybe more. Kudos to anyone who can find the "Whipping Post" reference (hint, it's near the Fillmore East reference - the place not the album).

Love the Highway 41 sign. I remember the first time it was pointed out to me in person. I should've had my picture taken but there were no cell phones at the time.
Maybe next time I go back.
Anyway, posted this link on my Facebook page and people who are only remotely ABB fans have commented on how great this is. Porkchopbob really outdid himself.

I saw the title of this thread every time I came here over the past week or so, and thought, o.k., now that the site is getting back to normal, there's more serious music discussion going on, so here we've got a thread discussing AFE, or the original line-up, etc. So I moved on.

Then just this morning I saw the video for the first time on the FaceBook Peach Corps page.

I was completely floored. Many of us have been impressed and appreciative of your ABB/DTB/general music related work in the past, but this is like your Magnum Opus in that category. As I said in my comments on facebook, I've dabbled in sound editing, freehand and flash a bit, so I had an inkling of the amount of work involved. Over a year doesn't surprise me at all. This was a massive undertaking, and has my vote for the #1 fan piece I've ever seen, for any group.

Fantastic job.

Of course, you may have shot yourself in the foot. We've now been spoiled to such a degree that nothing short of a feature-length film about the band's history (or maybe a full-blown animated AFE show) will be able to top this.

But seriously, thanks.

TopDroog - 8/26/2010 at 12:40 AM

P.S. - and if we're mentioning favorite tidbits, along with the mountain, sister Lucille, and the backseat of the Greyhound bus, I particularly liked the spot at about 1:50, where we're looking at the back of Derek's guitar neck, and it changes into Duane's guitar neck.

Thanks Droog, glad someone caught that actually, I can always count on you. I made a lot of subtle references, and that passage from Duane to Derek was one of them, I was very conscious of the transition order from era to era when I made the soundtrack. I wanted it to progress linearly at times from the beginning of the band to the present, be a scatter in the middle, and come back to the original band at the end. Glad I could make so many peoples' visits back to the site worth their time. A friend of Gregg's told me even he got a kick out of it while he recovers, which made my year, I mean I can't even tell you....

You have a good memory, that hasn't been online for a while. It was a color study I dig way back in college, it wasn't anyone in particular, but was based on Albert King.

Has anybody brought this to the attention of Bert Hohlman (I'm sure my spellling is off). I don't know, I just think this is something that is SO special, the band might very well be interested in using it in some way, shape or form.

porkchopbob - 9/8/2010 at 02:27 AM

This was kind of fizzling out and then Warren's official facebook page posted it and it blew up all over again. Glad everyone is still digging it, never thought it would have legs like this.

A note about the soundtrack that I have to mention (another thanks to harvey and axeman for sending me the shows that made this possible). I have never been a big trader so I was originally going to use what I had, which was the Nassau show for the '73 Chuck/Lamar era, and what I think might be a tv audio dub of Woodstock '94 that I picked up years ago. Both of those are pretty stellar, but I knew I could do better (my Woodstock '94 has Warren way up in the mix and Dickey is a little buried in the Nassau show though I might have used 1 clip of it for the cartoon when the tape dropped out from the Winterland '73 show I ended up using), that there had to be better quality.

And of course the kind people here didn't disappoint. I received an entire disc of just Statesboro Blueses from 1991-1996 (along with some other great shows, see below), and while all pretty stellar, after listening to them back-to-back, I think 1995/1996 might have been the pinnacle of the Warren/Woody era. It's weird listening to the same song from night-to-night consecutively, but you can really hear the tempo go up and down. Eventually I picked PNC 1994 as the hottest (and highest quality recording I had) version of the "Statesboro" from the Warren/Woody era. Gregg is in great form, Warren smokes, and the entire rhythm section absolutely swings.

I was also introduced to some stuff I had not heard and am so glad I got the chance to hear. First, if you don't have the 1973 Winterland show get your hands on it. From "Blue Sky" with Chuck, to Dickey's "Amazing Grace", there's a damn good reason a lot of this concert showed up on Wipe the Windows. The other find was Reno 1996, such a unique show and probably the hottest "Blue Sky" I've heard from Warren & Dickey and a great "Mountain Jam" tease from Woody. That's what I love about this band, just when you think you've heard it all, there are these gems out there to discover. Never gets old.

dougrhon - 9/8/2010 at 02:59 AM

Was that Sweet Melissa standing at the Cross Roads? I would love to see a list of every reference because I missed the vast majority I'm sure. I love the way Warren changed from the 90's to the present from a rectangle to a sort of triangle.

It's a gypsy at a crossroads, so yeah, referring to the song "Melissa". You're the first person I've heard who has caught that one. Everything and then some is a reference to something, I packed them in as much as I could. I don't want to give them all away, but nothing is random.

I may have to watch it 10,000 times to catch everything. Maybe we can start a thread where everyone lists the things they find besides the ultra obvious like being born in the back of a Grehound bus and going to the country with sister Lucille.

Would be interesting to see if people can pick them all out. There are at least 15 song references by my count, and 10 or more album cover/art references.

Wayne - 9/8/2010 at 04:44 PM

Is the reference to Whipping Post towards the end of the clip when the gal is out the door and the guy is still inside? Also, is the reference to the bank Can't Lose What You Never Had, (can't spend what you ain't got)? The Grant on the sign of the bank throws me off on that one, I keep thinking it has something to it though.

Love the reference to Don't Keep Me Wonderin' (car parked outside your door), the Stormy Monday scene. Just a great piece of work. Have it on my ipod, show the film to people all the time.

Nope and nope. But the "Whipping Post" reference is close to the bank and the name of the bank is not random. I didn't put any "Can't Lose What You Never Had" reference intentionally, but the gal at the door is from a specific song - hint: it wasn't written by the Brothers.

I thought the "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'" reference wasn't obvious enough, glad someone got that. That's no random car, by the way.

Wayne - 9/8/2010 at 06:01 PM

Ahh, the car from Wipe the windows album cover, nice!

One Way Out for the lady at the back door with the guy inside?

Still cannot pinpoint the Whipping Post reference or the bank, even with the 11.8.89 date on the sign. It keeps me going back trying to find these.

RyanBelair - 9/8/2010 at 06:24 PM

Hey Wayne,

I wondered about the bank myself, thought the same thing you thought at first...Can't Lose What You Never Had. Then I wondered if that is the bank that now stands in the place where the Filmore East once was? Not sure if that is right, but I think that may be the case.

I assumed also that the house with the "man down there" was a reference to One Way Out. The only bank I can think of is the Commerce Bank where Tony is working the rest of his life. The only reference I know to 1989 is that this is the year the ABB reunited.

You got it. The scene is Tony, "working at the commerce bank for the rest of his life", but the M.E. Grant Bank sign is reference to the Emigrant Bank that now stands where the Fillmore East once stood.

The Temp is 89, and that's reference to the Dreams Reunion Tour. If you know your music, you might know why the time is 11:08. It's not a literal reference to a song.

The lady at the back door probably isn't as clear, it flies by kind of fast. But she is being beckoned out of the rain.

We have a winner. I couldn't really figure out how to animate "Whipping Post" literally without it looking completely strange, but I had to throw it in somewhere.

My pleasure. So great!

ABBDutchFan - 2/29/2012 at 11:28 AM

Wouldn't this fantastic animation be a fantastic opening sequence / intro for the forthcoming 40th Anniversary DVD? Man, that would be soooooo cool and well deserved!

njpaulc - 2/29/2012 at 02:44 PM

Thanks Brock, I too was thinking about this earlier in the week. I bookmarked so I'll never lose it.

A brilliant piece of animation art.

Great idea. I'd like it to be used in some official capacity, if something official is ever released.

I did notice it playing on a small DVD player in the upstairs record store area of the Big House when I was there a little over a year ago.

cfbedford - 3/3/2012 at 07:19 PM

I was at the Big House in July and it was playing in the foyer right when you enter. So glad I found a copy to download. One of the coolest things I have ever seen and I've seen a lot.

RitaVT - 3/5/2012 at 08:18 PM

I KNEW there was a reason I wandered in here today.
This piece of work is unbelievable. What can I say that hasn't been said already?
Thank you so much for this, Brett. It's brilliant.

Brock - 3/6/2012 at 03:26 PM

Down w/ non-music threads!

Buppalo1 - 3/6/2012 at 05:24 PM

Watched it again today, for the first time in awhile.
Found myself thinking back to where life was in my world at some of the points in the band's history. They've been with me for a long time now.

fungus-among-us - 3/8/2012 at 07:28 PM

This an amazing piece of work Bob!

fanfrom-71 - 5/11/2012 at 03:34 PM

No matter what the current mood is around here Bob, it takes nothing from the classic work you did on this.
Fantastic!

ABBDutchFan - 2/23/2013 at 02:30 PM

For the first time in 2013 (Blasphemy!) and returning from page 21 (Blasphemy Again!!) back to were it belongs.

This should be embedded somewhere on the homepage of HTW!

Brock - 2/26/2013 at 04:34 PM

Alley-up!

cfbedford - 4/18/2013 at 01:42 PM

Wanee bump

ABBDutchFan - 4/18/2013 at 04:59 PM

Kudos for the bump!

ABBDutchFan - 9/23/2013 at 09:26 AM

This is a:

A) "WTF? Not bumped since 4/18/2013" bump
B) "Blasphemy that this post hasn't been topped yet!" bump
C) "Why hasn't this been featured on the homepage yet?" bump
D) "A Shame On Us That This Has Been Pushed Back To Page 48" bump
E) "An all of the above" bump

Only correct answer is E)

Brock - 9/23/2013 at 01:52 PM

^Two can play at that game!

geekfreak - 9/28/2013 at 01:30 PM

thanks brother porkchopbob. abb vid cool.

BoytonBrother - 9/28/2013 at 02:20 PM

This is absolutely beautiful. I love the changes in physical appearance of band members coinciding with the era of the song. And the different band members throughout the years is brilliant. This may sound weird, but that last scene of the peach truck driving off into the sunset on the road that goes on forever just about brought a tear to my eye.

Yep, noticed that. Link to the image is broken or the image itself isn't online anymore. Time for a replacement!
