Thread: Johnny Neel

BIGV - 3/14/2006 at 09:29 PM

This is a place to post opinions and thoughts ..so here goes. I alaways thought that regardless of how talented Johnny Neel is or is suppossed to be, His vibe never did quite fit the Brothers thing. EVERY time I saw the Bros. in Concert or on TV or heard a Bootleg,..I could count on Johnny's playing to be out of synch...badly timed or just nowhere near the groove the rest of the band was in. My guess is he's no longer with them, for that reason...Sorry Johnny!

bluboy - 4/20/2006 at 12:50 AM

Okay, so the many talents of Johnny Neel do not appeal to you. As for “… his vibe never did quite fit the Brothers thing”, are you not aware of the album, Seven Turns? Along with his masterful playing and singing on this album, Johnny co-wrote four of the songs, all well within the ABB “groove”.

I saw Johnny play a show with the ABB on 7-15-90 and have a cassette recording of it. It’s a magnificent show, and Neel’s contributions are nothing short of EXCELLENT!! Check out his killer harmonica solo between One Way Out and Blues Ain’t Nothin’. Then hear his over the top vocal showcase in Blues Ain’t Nothin’. Plus, his kick-ass keyboard playing throughout the concert takes the band to another inspired level. What a great show, and he adds so much to it.

Recall the ABB taped an MTV Unplugged segment with Johnny. The focus was mainly acoustic guitars and vocals, but as in my other two examples above, nowhere could Johnny be called “out of synch” or “badly timed”. Those phrases just don’t apply to musicians near the caliber of Johnny Neel, unless there are other circumstances … such as intoxication.

You offer no reference for “every time” other than live, on tape, and TV, so it’s hard to give your comments any credibility. To me, they sound ridiculous. Sorry.

Hey, we are all entitled to our view points and thoughts. This guy,....is glad Neel is gone...sorry.

Duude, Johnny Neel rocks. Just check out his work with Blue Floyd and Grease Factor

bottleneck07 - 7/14/2006 at 03:32 PM

Yeah johny is the **** , one of the best blues muscians around today.

johnwott - 7/29/2006 at 03:42 PM

I guess his style still doesn't fit since they recorded Maydell on the most recent studio record.

I got nothing against Johnny, great voice and solid songwriter, but I agree, he never really fit in with the Allmans. As for "Maydell", man do I hate that song.

I dig it

great shuffle. Oteil really kicks it in the butt.

Charlesinator - 9/26/2006 at 04:45 PM

I believe that "Maydell" was actually written while Johnny was still in the ABB.

TheBabe714 - 9/26/2006 at 05:58 PM

check out the abb mtv unpuglged with johnny neil playing some harp...excellent!

dadof2boys - 10/7/2006 at 11:38 PM

he's a fine musician--very talented but a bit of a tough personality fit with the ABB

WarrenMcCae - 10/12/2006 at 01:53 AM

I disagree Johnny Neel was awesome with the Brothers.Johnny Neels has a lot of soul!

dadof2boys - 10/12/2006 at 01:42 PM

warren--never said neel lacked soul or the chops--but that he was a poor PERSONALITY fit for the ABB--nothing agains't his musical ability!!--peace

I also hate that song. However overall loved his work with The Brothers & his contribution on Life Before Insanity for The Mule.

Thank heavens the vast majority sees & hears Johnny for the great musician he is -- trying to paint him as the next-era Mike Lawler, the short-lived keyboard player people like to dislike, is ignorant. I thought Johnny was great with the Brothers, and bet anything his other recordings are even better. 11/7/90 Richmond VA is one of my favorite cassettes, & Johnny smokes on Elizabeth Reed.

Quinn - 10/6/2007 at 07:48 PM

saw Johnny in Aug. grate show

greggreg - 10/25/2007 at 12:30 AM

I'm listening to johnny's cd 'comin atcha live'. It is great. Look at some of the players.

Scotty Hawkins Drums
Tim Loftin Bass
Delbert McClinton Harmonica
Jack Pearson Guitar

I was also listening recently to one of the abb 1990 shows. Johnny was kind of 'out of sync' with the band on 'jessica'. But he was playing a great song a different way from the way it had been played before.

His piano had almost a gospel feel and then a doctor john feel and then he segued into the wonderful bridge that led to dickey stepping up. So i have a lot of admiration for johnny and would like to hear more of him.

Quinn - 11/16/2007 at 02:02 AM

sweet

BIGV - 11/19/2007 at 12:32 PM

I too believe Johnny Neel to be a Talented Musician. Zamfir, Plays a Hell of a Pan Flute... But I don't care to see him in the ABB...

Quinn - 11/22/2007 at 02:20 AM

darthjimmy - 12/8/2007 at 05:47 PM

Pan flute would be awesome in the ABB. Maybe Kofi Burbridge could do it.
I too thought Johnny Neel didn't quite gel with ABB, but I think he's a great player. His solo work and with Dickey Betts, Mule, X2, and Blue Floyd are all very good. He seems to play against the beat in the some songs which isn't necessarily bad but unusual in the ABB. Usually when they're really swinging and in the groove they sound like one big instrument and occasionally he played against that. I remember seeing a VH1 special about Seven Turns and the return of the ABB where he didn't seem as happy to be in the band as Warren & Woody were. I've also heard that all original members but Gregg wanted to skip the extra keyboard player for the reunion so maybe there was some tension because of that. Johnny Neel was probably just a victim of circumstances. That said, I love True Gravity and his live renditions of IMOER. I just got a copy of his album Late Night Breakfast which is pretty kick-ass.

alloak41 - 12/17/2007 at 04:13 AM

I love his solo in the middle of True Gravity

Quinn - 1/7/2008 at 02:18 AM

Capn - 1/7/2008 at 03:33 AM

Love the man
Great musician

bluesky12 - 2/12/2008 at 05:25 PM

No offense but the Harp solo in Come On In My Kitchen on Unplugged is just straight up awful.

Quinn - 2/18/2008 at 03:31 PM

Johnny will be playing June Jam in Deleware with Dan

Hey Stephen... By no means do I even put Lawler and J. Neel in the same class. Not what this guy meant. I always thought that somebody in the band owed Lawler a BIG favor...haha.... Neel, on the other hand can flat out play, he is a multi-talented guy who plays a lot of instruments very well. I just don't hear the meshing of styles, the convergence of melody that this band is famous for when J. Neel solos. Very rarely anyway.

Capn - 7/27/2009 at 07:36 PM

I gotta agree with almost everything in this thread... re: "fit"

i even agree with this statement
