Thread: Johnny Neel encounters

johnwott - 5/12/2004 at 08:13 PM

I had just caught the Machine (another Pink Floyd Tribute band) with Johnny sitting in.
It was the show at the State Theater in Virginia where they played both Floyd and Dead
material. Jeff Pevar sat in also. Great show.

After the show I was getting in my truck in the theater's parking lot. One of the stage door opens
to the lot. Somehow Johnny made a wrong turn and ended up in the lot, looking for
the dressing room, without an escort. So I got to briefly meet Johnny and help him back to the dressing room.

Peace
John

not really a "meeting" but last year at the beacon i was walking up the aisle to get a beer and low and behold they were escorting johnny down and nobody noticed him, so i bumped in to him shook his hand, he'l like "whats up man?"...pretty cool

How come Johnny only stuck around for one album and what two tours? Was there a problem?

I met Johnny Sat. night, for the first time. He is choice entertainment! Made me feel welcome, like an old buddy. Hung out after show and did some Cuervo drinking and lots of laughing!!!!! What a nice man and a great guy. Grease Factor....a cosmic experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nic and Dustin, thanks for the escort! Very nice to meet you two and hope to see you again. Do contact Goliath for music!

Johnny is classic. I've hung out with him a few times at Tobacco Road in NYC when it was open and he was a laugh riot. One time DJ Logic was sitting right next to him, obviously Johnny didn't know who was sitting next to him, and Johnny starts ripping on Bobby Weir about he just plays one chord over and over and over again. DJ Logic was also touring with RatDog at the time, and JOhnny starts badmouthing the whole turntable scratching thing too. Someone then told Johnny who was sitting next to him. Johnny just said something to the effect of, "Ah I don't know about that stuff, I'm just a funk, country, rock guy. That's where I'm coming from. My daughter knows about all that rap stuff." DJ Logic just started laughing, Johnny sort of apologized and they proceeded to go upstairs and jam together on stage for a few songs. It was great.

Heh, good story Jim. I saw him last sunday... funny guy. Was in pretty rough condition though. Excellent keyboardist though.

ABBstillrockin04 did you catch him at the Tundra? I saw him at the Rongo. Same story as you. Good guy who likes to have a good time. He sure can play too.

I met him a few times, but most recent he an Berry Oakley jr.were hanging out in the lobby at the Beacon on March 21 Johnny was drinking a beer just talking and having a good time. Then he set in with thr ABB on the 22 Big House show and i ran into him after that show. He's a real nice guy.He said something about X-2 doing another album, but the record company wants them to add a guitar player,or he made have been talking about touring with a guitarist.to be honest i had a pretty good buzz that night,so forgive me if my memory isn't 100% on that.

I have ran into Johnny Neel several times. Each time seemed funnier than the one before. The first time I meet Johnny was in the bathroom during the Beetle Jam. I was at the pot when I hear a voice say, "Hi I am Johnny Neel." I look next to me, and I see a large blind man taking a leak.

After a mule show, I found Johnny hunting for a bowl in the crowd around Warren's Bus. He found plenty of willing fans.

This is pretty mean to say, but I think it is pretty funny. My wife used to say that Johnny's tour bus was a popup camper. Every time we see a popup camper, she would say, "Johnny's on tour again."

I have never had the nerve to ask for an autograph. I think I talked to ABB420 at the Bean Blossom Derek show. He said that Johnny actually likes for people to ask for an autograph.

I don't blame Johnny for voicing his opinion.Folks who like real music don't like that dj scrathing crap either.

Last year after the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga I ran into Johnny at a tavern in Chattanooga. He loves that tequila! He sat in with The Inredible Heat Machine that night. I volunteered to take his crew back to the hotel cause the cab was taking forever. ABB riding shotgun!

Peachfan8 - 1/5/2009 at 06:28 PM

I have always wanted to meet Johnny! He seems like a character from the stories that fans and band members tell of him!

phunkluva - 1/25/2009 at 11:29 PM
