Thread: Could Dickey have a reunion in Albany??

peachhead76 - 7/12/2003 at 04:20 AM

I was just looking at the Gathering of The Vibes schedule. I see that Dickey and his band were there Friday 7/11/03 while the ABB are there later today 7/12/03. Plus, you have Susan Tedeschi and Warren playing later on in the festival. It would be cool of everybody put away their differences and have Dickey play with the boys (ABB) for a couple tunes! Anybody remember hearing Blue Sky at a recent ABB concert since 2000 when he got the boot.....?? Not me......

Would be nice, but highly doubtful..

Dickey's playing at Annapolis, MD today 07-12-03 and Long Island tomorrow, I don't think he'll go up to Albany in between. But, you never know. Would be cool though.
Be safe,

I'm an oldtimer who had last seen the ABB in '79. I saw them with the Dead twice in '73 and the resulting jams, and altogether about 10 times in the 70's. When I learned that Dickey had been fired, I was outraged. When I saw them at Bonnaroo, though, I understood why they fired him. I'll put it this way. I have been a guitarist for 30 years. If I had to learn any Dickey Betts stuff that doesn't use a slide, I could do it pretty quickly (I'm told I sound like a cross between Dickey and Jerry Garcia, but of course not as good). If I had to learn Derek or Warren the same way, I wouldn't be able to touch at least 30% and probably close to 50% of it. I still have the utmost respect for Dickey as a musician, but I don't think he can touch Warren or Derek at this point. It's not that he's bad, it's just that Warren and Derek are that good. I know Dickey blazed the trail but Warren and Derek are evolving it. It would be nice to see all three of them play together, but I don't think Dickey would want to do it. I hope I'm wrong, but I just can't see Dickey getting past being fired and wanting to go up and jam with a band he helped form but can no longer be a member of.

Taterrifiv1- good post, and as a old timer myself I do agree with you. I caught the band last summer after having seen them last in '91 My first time was Watkins Glen. I have been listening to HTN since it came out. I have been slowing becoming a huge fan of Warren for some time now. I admire his efforts and of course his playing(he's the real deal).. the kid is great as well.. the split appears to be working for all parties involved. Many here will tell you ,now there is just more music to get into..

I think the bands actually requested that they play on different days. A reunion was NOT in the cards.

This is a little late(shows are already done)but I thought it was deserving of a comment. I was not old enought to have the priveledge of seeing ABB in the 70's. Dickey is great and I do miss hearing Blue Sky at the shows, but it is not enough to want him back. I have not missed a summer tour since 92' and usually see 3 or more shows. I love where the ABB are today. Last summer was the best shows I have ever seen and heard and hearing some Beacon recordings i think there getting better. I think they got real stagnant for quite a few years (just before Warren and Woody left) Then the replacements(guitarists) did not work for my listen pleasure. No offense to any of them(Jack Pearson, Jimmy Herriing and even Derrick pre Warrens return)
But now the band is playing a bigger variety of songs and there is a youthfulness I have not seen before. (you lucky folks that saw them in the early 70's)
I can go see the Dickey Betts Band if I want to hear Dickey's sweet melodies. But, in my opinion, The ABB are better off with out him.(at least for now)
Looking forward to the Chicago Theatre shows
Have a great summer tour all
