absnj - 4/2/2007 at 04:56 PM

I guess it's just you and me... too bad, I hear that Clapton and the London Symphony Orchestra are sitting in for a classical version of Layla...

I have an extra in the Loge, if a third person wants to join us.

Reviews????

absnj - 4/3/2007 at 01:19 PM

Very good show, but not over the top. Nice to hear WDLGTBSB and 44 Blues, too tired, gotta work.

drobyn - 4/3/2007 at 01:24 PM

Any news on who the guest keyboard player was?

I had called Franklin's Towere for Fri and Sat. Good to see you got half of it

Eileen1 - 4/3/2007 at 01:38 PM

Ok, so here's the deal. I thought the show was GREAT. Me and Vinsanity were first row, in front of Gregg. It was incredible.

There were 2 guest guitar players and the guest keyboard player, plus Susan did 2 numbers. I flirted with Gregg a couple of times and got a couple of smiles out of him, so Im a happy camper today!! Warren threw his pick at me which I gave to Vinsanity!! He's a happy camper too!!

Warren, Gregg, Derek and Oteil were just having a grand ole time up there and you could see it. They would pass smiles back and forth and even talk to each other. Nothing like being up front, felt like Warren was playing for me and Vinsanity. INCREDIBLE!!

Im not a great review writer, so hopefully others can shed some more light on the magic that took place at the Beacon last night, and it WAS MAGIC!!!

My double header started at Yankee Stadium for Opening day!

Yanks win 9-5!!
Then to Arthur ave, for dinner, a quick cat nap, and off to The Beacon
That was one great full day
What a great show! Went Sat the 31st, was not still feeling well, and thought the show was lacking any energy..maybe it was me. But last night they smoked. For me, it was a great set list. Warren looked like he was making up for his off nights, and derek played a much more Melodic, less screeching guitar. I am one of those who loves the kid, but misses Dickey. Bett's inspring, melodic playing is missed by me on occassions.
I had an extra ticket as my buddy who was coming from work went straight home sick...I couldn't give the ticket away, so I had two seats to myself. As luck would have it, i sent next to a taper, who is going to send me a copy...very cool, and thanks.
Crowd was perfect, seems you get a more mature crowd during the work. Much more vocal too calling back for encore. Sat, was pretty lame in that regard.
Going back Thurs with the Mrs. Going to meet up with Brock, and who everelse!... a good time should be had by all.
I'm sorry to all those on the #1st who i missed. I didnt come down to the last minute for the show, as i was still pretty sick. My Loss, but I'll catch up to you all at Jam for Duane. Big Dave..write my phone # down CORRECT this time..LOL, man I'm so bummed i missed you guys!
Till Thurs!

Dorothyann - 4/3/2007 at 02:12 PM

Eileen mama!

Laura and I came looking for you at Yogi's....but here's the skinny. I left your cell phone number at work (sheesh - brain dead), so we went into Yogi's and asked all the women if they were Eileen!! Needless to say - they weren't!

Sounds like you had an awesome show.

One thing I've noticed and commented on is how much Gregg seems to really be having fun and just enjoying this whole run. Moreso than I have seen in years!

Brilliant!

DA

Eileen1 - 4/3/2007 at 02:17 PM

Dorothy, I was in Yogi's till 7:50. What time did you get there? I was supposed to meet a bunch of folks during intermission, which I never got to do.

It was also great meeting Alan, Heidi and Dell for the first time!! Ya'll are great folks. I also seen Chuck and JonathanCarl last night, and Cujo!!

Eileen, I was with DorothyAnn and we were there til right about the same time. We were right under the three girls dancing on the bar. We walked about halfway through asking the other two women if they were Eileen, and neither of them were, but then we found my buddies Billy and John so we stopped to talk to them. Where were you?

Hi all! So last night was my first ABB concert. (I'm 44.) Anyway, I'm not a diehard fan or anything. I just always liked their music.

Thoughts/questions on the show....

first off, I'd never been to the Beacon, so I was a bit surprised when I saw people walking in with draft beer and beer bottles. I figured it was a "theatre" afterall, so I figured they wouldn't have allowed this. I didn't realize they allowed drinking in the theatre itself. But I guess now I understand that the Beacon is apparently used for CONCERTS, and so they don't maintain it to the same standards as say Broadway theatres.

I was also struck by how passionate ABB fans apparently are. It seems many fans see them every year in concert, no?

Once the concert started, and people began lighting up, I was like "I LOVE it!!" In this day and age of over-regulation, it was so nice to see people doing their own thing, and the theatre staff turning a blind eye to it. I mean, no one in the crowd was misbehaving or anything. Just having a good time.

I had no idea ABB attracted that kind of crowd however, but when I saw the psychadelic images appearing on the screen, esp of the mushrooms, I began to get it. :-)

I have to say that while the band was really tight, I was disappointed that I did not know ONE song that they played. Like I said, I'm not an avid fan, so I don't know all their stuff, but I was hoping to hear Ramblin Man, Melissa, Midnight Rider... stuff like that. Do they never play such songs at their concerts?

I understand Greg Allman was the guy on keyboards, right? Can anyone tell me who the guitarist was, who generally stood nearest to Greg Allman, and who sang lead on a few songs? I really liked his voice.

Also, who was the woman who sang two songs? She ROCKED!!!!

Thanks everybody!!

absnj - 4/3/2007 at 03:55 PM

Yeah, was my first time to hear Statesboro Blues, Revival, Hot ' Lanta, and Stormy Monday.

Eileen1 - 4/3/2007 at 04:07 PM

From left to right on stage, Gregg, Warren, Derek, Oteil. You definitely willl not hear Ramblin Man. They are doing Midnight Rider this run and I have yetl to hear Melissa.

Glad you enjoyed the show and Susan Tedeschi (who is Derek's wife) was excellent!!

yippee1999 - 4/3/2007 at 04:18 PM

Thanks for info. Is there a "reason" why they don't/won't do Ramblin Man? Just curious why you put it that way.

schneile - 4/3/2007 at 04:25 PM

While I find it really hard to believe that you--an ABB virgin--really do exist, I think it's kind of cute, so welcome to the party! Point by point:

You said, I was also struck by how passionate ABB fans apparently are. It seems many fans see them every year in concert, no?

You got it! Not only do the fans see them every year, many people see them @ the legendary "Beacon Run" more than once. It is not uncommon to find people going to three, four or more Beacon shows. Many save their pennies all year just for the Beacon shows. In fact, I often skip the summer shows so I can afford the inevitable extra Beacon gigs. You can't have just one!

You said, I had no idea ABB attracted that kind of crowd however, but when I saw the psychadelic images appearing on the screen, esp of the mushrooms, I began to get it. :-)

Yep, one of my favorite images is the one below, which they didn't use last night. Can you read it? It says, "Peakin' at the Beacon." Now THAT'S my kind of band!

You said, I was hoping to hear Ramblin Man, Melissa, Midnight Rider... stuff like that. Do they never play such songs at their concerts?

You may hear the latter two, but Ramblin' Man is a Dickey Betts song and they tend to stay away from very heavily Dickey-influenced songs these days, although you will find exceptions.

You said, Can anyone tell me who the guitarist was, who generally stood nearest to Greg Allman, and who sang lead on a few songs? I really liked his voice.

Yup, that's Warren Haynes, and if you liked him last night, you'll LOVE him in his other band, Gov't Mule.

And finally, you said, Also, who was the woman who sang two songs? She ROCKED!!!!

As noted by Eileen, that's Susan Tedeschi, who has a respectable career of her own and her band just toured with the Derek Trucks Band. Derek is also known to join Susan with her band onstage from time to time. They have two kids, so I suspect they spend as much time together as possible on the road.

Again, welcome to the party and get yourself back to the Beacon before the run is over!

Thanks for all the info Laura! And thanks "other person" for video clip and awesome photo. HOW did you get such a shot?

OK, now my next question is: what exactly is skunk pot? Last night I was like "there's a skunk on the loose in here!" and my friend was like "no, that's skunk pot". I'd never heard of it before!
