Thread: Red Rocks, Red Rocks, I can't wait!!!!!!

SmilingJack - 2/23/2007 at 07:06 PM

I've held off as long as I can! I can't stand it any more. When is Red Rocks???? I want to plan something, and at my age need the time to get things done. Bring it on!!!!

Brucebcd - 2/23/2007 at 07:07 PM

Redrum, Redrum, Redrum...

Last year we had at least 3 Red Rocks threads going at once at one time before we tried to go with a single one. It is probably where I first started talking to Sue and Mitzi. we are going to try and keep a single thread going which means I'll probably try to bump it up whenever I see it on the 2nd page so that someone does not pose a new RR question and inadvertantly start a new thread.

lolasdeb - 2/23/2007 at 07:22 PM

Smart planning, Jack! It's so much easier to keep things in focus when there's one go-to source! And having it bumped is good, too - heck, the planning stage is almost as much fun as the concert-listening-partying stage (notice, I said ALMOST) LOL

SmilingJack - 2/23/2007 at 07:27 PM

I would also like to say hi to Cliff of Cliff'n'Tina just in case he ever reads the forum anymore. Cliff had been doing a "I want my RR date" thread for a couple of years when I first started participating on the forums about 5 years ago (I don't know how long he had done it for), and one year I started it ahead of him and kind of took it over. Cliff left the board after a whipping post thread went nasty, and I don't know if he comes back at all. He was a devoted ABB fan with a website about them. I just have a vested interest in keeping Denver/Red Rocks on the schedule. It is not like the NE here where we can jump in the car and get another big venue an hour away. If we don't catch them in Denver, we need to fly to where ever they are playing, so I want Red Rocks staying on the schedule, and not only staying, but going back to a 2 day schedule that is not shared with anybody. I will of course go if they co-bill again, I just prefer 'An Evening With' shows.

The planning gives this old fart something to look forward to each year, so I enjoy it. I don't think we can count on a special band preformance (Devon's Honeytribe with Derek sitting in) again, but that would be great also.

susea - 2/23/2007 at 07:42 PM

I'm in and am so happy to see the official thread of 2007!

greggswoman - 2/23/2007 at 07:56 PM

I felt like Red Rocks was a family reunion for the Brothers. All their families were there. I bet we'll be seein' Honeytribe again at Red Rocks this year. Oh, btw:

ARE WE THERE YET???????

CowboyNeil - 2/23/2007 at 08:22 PM

Wish 07 would be a family festival thang with Oteil ,DTB ,Mule and ABB. And The ABB closing both nights or ABB closing first night and DTB/Mule doing equal sets to close up shop. Think I would want the ABB both nights if I had to choose though. Certainly would pay a little more for that lineup

Last years gathering was memorable, great music, great people, **** ty weather but hey I'll take it.

Also will never stop in CS if I have to get out of there before rush hour. Sorry Tommy G, but I hate the traffic in CS

Jacks 07!

dutchoneill - 2/24/2007 at 12:56 AM

Red Rocks and Atlanta are on my short list of shows to try and catch out side of the Tri State area.

Rydethwind - 2/24/2007 at 02:24 AM

I am with Ya SmilingJack Time to start making plans i can not think of any more of a good time than i had at your house and at RR's with all the brothers and sisters..looking forward to this year ...NO RAIN NO RAIN ....

Last year was memorable, but how much more so would it have been if it was nice out?

SmilingJack - 2/25/2007 at 09:59 PM

Rather than a plain bump, let me just say-PAGE 3 NO WAY!
More groups have announced RR plans, but there is plenty of good room on the schedule.

susea - 2/25/2007 at 11:24 PM

Yes this is true. The anticipation begins!

DougMacKenzie - 2/25/2007 at 11:31 PM

Been listening to the Instant Live, I had such a great time last year. Weather was terrible, but looking back it's kind of funny now. What other band in the world could get this 50 year old to stand out in the cold and rain with some old high school friends for hours? And leave thinking it was well worth it?

ruthelane - 2/26/2007 at 12:16 AM

I am excited about Red Rocks just reading your posts.
I have seen pictures of Red Rocks but have never been there.
I'll try to get there this year.

JHawke - 2/26/2007 at 12:30 AM

Debi and I are there even if we have to sit in an empty RR with a boombox. Tyler

You can find Cliff hanging out at the message borad on the Derek Trucks website.

I don't know if he ever lurks here or is actually fooling us all with a new username...

Enough od that - Red Rocks is beautiful...just too far from Virginia!

SmilingJack - 2/26/2007 at 07:36 PM

Here is Red Rock's website for those who have never looked. There are some good pictures here. http://www.redrocksonline.com/index.asp

greggswoman - 2/26/2007 at 07:46 PM

We want our date!!

ARE WE THERE YET?!?!?!?

SmilingJack - 2/27/2007 at 10:20 PM

I guess I was a little too anxious to start the RR thread before the Beacon/Wanee were over. Found it at the end of page 4. Maybe It should just sink for now and start up again in a month or so.

greggswoman - 2/27/2007 at 10:25 PM

NOPE! I already have Red Rocks fever! TOO LATE!!!

kahiki45 - 2/27/2007 at 11:23 PM

"...wish I were a headlight on a northbound train..."

If it's happening, I'm going. Morrison's not very far from Boulder. By the way, the Hotel Boulderado is where Dylan stays, it is said, prior to his tours, practicing in the Fox Theater on the Hill, but I digress...

Saw the ABB in fall of 90, I believe, (maybe it was fall of 89, can't remember) with the then line up at Folsum Auditorium at CU-Boulder. Aside from really good music, seem to also recall Dickey Betts and his cowboy hat and boots and Gregg had a very large, super-sized plastic cup on his keyboard set-up. Most everything else is a blur.

Red Rocks. Kind of like Red Rover, Red Rover, sends the Allman Brothers over.

Hey Kahiki45, are you in Boulder? I was at that CU fieldhouse show-it was the first time I had seen them in over 10 years and to say I was blown away by the reformed band would be an understatement as I have not stopped going to see them since.

kahiki45 - 2/28/2007 at 04:21 AM

"...Honolulu starlight, the song remains the same..."

Not in Boulder right now, Smiling Jack, I am in the deep south. The wild west: Hawaii.

Yes, Smiling Jack, it was the Field House. I think it was called the Folsum Field House or something. Was that in Fall of 89 or 90?

For y'all in the continental U.S., you're damn lucky to go see the ABB on a regular basis.

Over here, no Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, etc.

But, hope springs eternal! Leon Russel coming this weekend! And, sometime in June, Johnny Winter. **** , I might relapse. Not likely. Second Winter.

"God said to Abraham, 'Kill me a son.' Abe said "Man, you must be puttin me on." God said 'No.' Abe said "What?' God said 'You can do what you want Abe but, next time you see me coming, you better run.' Abe said 'Where you want this killing done?' God said 'That way. Highway 61.'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------
I think they played the field house for Folsom Field twice, and I went to the '90 show. I had lost my love for them during the trying periods from the late 70's to '89 and did not plan on seeing them when they reformed with Warren/Alan. But a critic for the Denver paper went to a show at Red Rocks and wrote a review that started out saying he went with a bad review in mind. He then said he had to change it because it was the best rock show he had ever seen. So when they played the field house months later, I was there and have been going to shows ever since then.
Did you get to see the Gregg Allman shows in Hawaii?

I am all but certain that it must of been the Fall 90 show that I attended. Wow, 17 years ago! In answer to your question, yes, I did, in fact, go see GA and Friends over in Waikoloa as well as at Aloha Tower. Far-out. The band opened both nights I witnessed with "I'm no Angel." Right on and righteous.

Nice meeting you also. I too would prefer a full day of ABB family bands instead of the SCI or Yonder Mountain etc. They would sell out 2 full "Evening with.." dates not that long agao, so I don't see the need for the other bands. I am always too predjudiced against them waiting for the ABB or Mule, that I don't really appreciate them. And I am not saying they are bad.

I think you are correct Sue. Tix went on sale while Lana/Rowland were on their honeymoon and there was confusion over whether both the ABB and the Mule would play both nights, which didn't matter to me since I was going both nights regardless.

Since that was the worst weather I ever saw for a concert at RR, I think our chances of good weather are excellent. And if there is a bad forcast, I bet we all bring a lot more gear!

I've been going to Red Rocks for shows since 1978 and last sept was the coldest wettest night I ever spent there,so chances are we will be dry at the next show.I hope Oteil brings his band back as I really dug that set.

Jack a nice warm evening is owed to you my friend.

Hope that crew comes out as that gathering of folks was just a tremendous gathering, I will always cherish that weekend

Hi Mike,
Are you guys still in deep winter there? It is definately warming here. we are still getting little snow storms, but we don't have the huge base anymore. On a sunny day while walking the dogs, I can see/feel the spring now. Denver does go back and forth weather wise in the spring, but we are going the right way now. where exactly are you? I want to check the atlas.

CowboyNeil - 3/9/2007 at 12:31 AM

Hey Mike!

How about a show at The Gorge this year, have never been to a show there, but would make a road trip if they have a date there this summer. then you can show me how you guys fish those big waters up there.

Jack, the good vibes were contagious from your party and then again we were at RED ROCKS, rain or shine it is a magical place. Have always loved shows there but last years crew was classic. It still warms my heart to think about all the friends I got to meet. Mostly thanks to your hospitality.

Brofan and I split at the encore but walking out I looked back at RR in the MIST and OWO playing,it was a surreal sight

Rydethwind - 3/9/2007 at 01:03 AM

You know i would love another show at the gorge it is a venue unlike any other the view is second to none and the vibe is always great..i truly would like to see it happen...

Jack the snow she is a melting thank goodness..beed around 50 here today and we have maybe a foot left on the ground..

Hiya GreggsWoman how are you sister.." we are closer i just know we are..

kahiki45 - 3/9/2007 at 06:59 AM

Cowboy Neil, where is this place, The Gorge? Sounds quite interesting. And, where is The Gorge in relation and distance from Red Rocks? Or, if anybody else knows, that information would be appreciated.

By the way, if you think Red Rocks was cold, heard it was 20 below in upstate NY the other day from one source and 11 degrees in NYC as well from another.

Mission: ABB Red Rocks/The Gorge.

CowboyNeil - 3/9/2007 at 02:10 PM

I believe the Gorge is on the Columbia River Gorge in Washington State, like I said its a Road Trip!

Mike exactly where would The Gorge be Located?

And it was not that it was brutally cold like 20 below but it was Labor Day Weekend and it was wet to the bone as we were in a rain cloud all night. It was cold and wet! But the music was hot but my babt was not!

Rydethwind - 3/9/2007 at 03:11 PM

The Gorge Is about 30 Miles from Ritzville Washington on the Columbia River near the town of George Washington...it is about 5 or 6 miles or so off of Interstate 90...and here is what it looked like on ABB Day 2004..

SmilingJack - 3/9/2007 at 08:45 PM

I wanted to go to that ABB/GD show at the Gorge that year, but the ABB were playing Red Rocks 3 days later, so we held off. Some year we will make it there.
Yes, it wasn't the actual temperature at Red Rocks (as I remember it got to about 40 degrees), as much as the swirling, cold drizzle for hours. It started right with Oteil's band, continued on thru the night, on a Labor Day weekend where normally you would look forward to sunset for a little cooling from late summer heat.

susea - 3/9/2007 at 08:50 PM

Yes I agree, the Gorge is on my list of places too!

Mudflapgirl - 3/9/2007 at 08:52 PM

Looks like a Gorge-us place!

Rydethwind - 3/9/2007 at 11:23 PM

Beautiful spring day in denver. Things are warming up. we even had rain yesterday. It helped clean some winter dirt away. we'll still get some snow, but the trend is clear. maybe I'll even meet Mudflapin Girl this year.

Jacquie - 3/11/2007 at 10:51 PM

C'mon summer dates!!!!!!

Rydethwind - 3/11/2007 at 11:48 PM

SmilingJack - 3/13/2007 at 09:58 PM

Summer weather here in Denver today, which just adds to Red Rocks fever-the western version of Beacon fever!

susea - 3/13/2007 at 10:28 PM

OH Yeah....Hiya hiay heya heya RED ROCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKSSSS!

SmilingJack - 3/16/2007 at 09:11 PM

In the local weekly that has a lot of music ads that I read today there are now a number of bands announcing RR dates. I hope we hear soon like right after the Beacon run.

susea - 3/18/2007 at 07:14 PM

Here's the Red Rocks schedule so far...

http://www.redrocksonline.com/pages/concerts/index.asp

SmilingJack - 3/18/2007 at 09:31 PM

It has been in the 70's the last 2 days and Red Rocks fever is rampant. Their are also other groups who say they are playing RR whose names have not appeared yet, but more are showing up regularly.
I think Lee Roy Parnell may be playing the same guitarfest that Dickey Betts is playing here at the end of July at Copper Mountain.

susea - 3/19/2007 at 11:36 AM

I hear from Jam Bands that Yonder Mountain Srting Band is headling the Sat of Labor Day weekend! Hmmm, pretty good for them to be the headlining act!

CowboyNeil - 3/19/2007 at 05:39 PM

Real good for Yonder Mtn String Band, those guys were great last Sept, wish them nothing but the best

Hey Susea, I'm a western cowboy from New Jersey, no wonder I am so confused!

I'm just a lonesome LA cowboy, hangin out, hangin on.....

susea - 3/19/2007 at 05:46 PM

I just checked and they are booked for Sun Sept 2nd!

How are you CowboyNeil!

CowboyNeil - 3/19/2007 at 06:19 PM

Hangin out and Hangin on Susea!

Looking forward to my 29th yr of going to Red Rocks, its as cool as the first every time!

Since a couple of years ago the show was Sept. 19th and the weather was great, I would not anticipate bad weather like last year even if they came a week later. A week later might be better for me because Phyllis' older sister (who has never visited us since we moved here in'74!) is planning a trip out at the end of August and Phyllis' younger nephew and his family are going to come then and stay 2 weeks.
But, have no fear about a pre-Red Rocks party. BigMike has been living with Lenore here for the last couple of months (doing his best Harry Chapin/Taxicab driver imitation), and he had already asked me if I wanted them to do it. I said no at the time, but if I have my in-laws here (my sister in law is very straight, Jewish American princess and 7 years older than Phyllis), I'll just ask Mike/Lenore and give them a hand putting it together.
Neil, my first time was '74. I can't remember the first show, but it might have been Linda Rondstat andthe Nitty Gritty Dirt band.

CowboyNeil - 3/19/2007 at 08:17 PM

Jack, mine was July 7,1978, The Grateful Dead, a fine time was had by all!

Nothin left to do but smile, smile ,smile on July 8th the next night, careful what ya drink at a Dead show, many pranksters abound!

SmilingJack - 3/19/2007 at 08:51 PM

Neil, that was the first show you and I went to together then-we just didn't know it! I remember a young person with a tee shirt that read 'Another generation of Deadheads'. I guess there has been another since!

CowboyNeil - 3/20/2007 at 12:00 AM

Jack,I bet we have been to more than that show at RedRocks before we knew each other. Funny as alot of my site friends and I have experienced an evening of music but did not know each other.Stormy,Doug, and I have been to lots of shows back in Jersey when we were young, along with Illness I believe.

The cool thing back then is you could just walk into Red Rocks and sit inside instead of having to sit on the stairs back then.

Tell Mike and Lenore they have a tough act to follow after last years gathering. How is Mike adjusting to life in The Mile High?

susea - 3/20/2007 at 11:55 AM

If anyone has the ABB show from 8/4/79, please let me know. A friend from Hawaii who used to live in Colorado was at that show and had met Gregg. He is searching for it and I'm trying to help him.

Rydethwind - 3/20/2007 at 01:15 PM

Hiya everybody... we need a date ...

susea - 3/20/2007 at 05:55 PM

Derek & Susan are proud to announce their Soul Stew Revival tour, a special summer outing marking the first time the couple has toured as one band, sharing a familiar cast of musicians including the entire dTb ensemble plus Ron Holloway on saxophone from Susan's touring unit, and adding Derek's younger brother Duane Trucks on second drum kit. Fans can expect a mixture of material from both artists' repertoire along with new songs worked up especially for this tour. There will be a preview performance at the Wanee Fest in April with the added bonus of the dTb's NYE horn section! The tour will consist of a limited run of dates this summer in the west before the dTb gets cranking again on their own for a Canadian tour in late June, and one additional Soul Stew date in Aspen later in September. On sale ticket information can be found on the dTb Tour page, with the first dTb Ticketing presale starting this Wed 3/21 for Denver, San Diego, & Los Angeles. There will not be many Soul Stew dates in '07 so catch them while you can!

Looks like Labor Day weekend has Derek and Susan for 9/3: Snowmass Village, CO - Jazz Aspen Snowmas.

Hmmmm, now we need the ABB/Mule dates to be around that time as well! Would love to hear Soul Stew Revival Tour at Red Rocks!!

SmilingJack - 3/20/2007 at 11:01 PM

And Derek and Susan are in the mountains 9/3, so I don't think the ABB is playing Labor Day.

Mike offered Lenore's place before I even knew my in-laws were coming, but I am still hoping to do it here since it took me a few years to get a lot of people's attention-I'd hate to have to quit now!
I forget the year you moved from NJ-we may have gone to shows there together also.
Mike has been driving a cab, and putting in a lot of hours. He seems to really like it, and has been making decent money. He does a lot of night driving because a lot of driver's go home and he gets a lot of the calls.

For information on lodging and ticketing packages please visit Stay Aspen Snowmass at http://www.stayaspensnowmass.com/misc/jas_laborday.php.

I'll bet the dates will be confirmed in the next week or two for Red Rocks. Just saw another summer show that's confirmed on the PhilZone for RatDog to open for ABB in NJ. Dates will be with us very soon!

susea - 3/25/2007 at 11:09 PM

I'm feeling the plans slipping into place!!

greggswoman - 3/25/2007 at 11:12 PM

I'm sooooooo in for Aspen. NOW COME ON RED ROCKS!!!

RatDog hasn't confirmed the NJ date with the Brothers yet...and apparently neither have the Brothers???? Or have they??? Who knows, right Sue. Should be quite a show I'm sure if the date sticks.

susea - 3/25/2007 at 11:16 PM

That's right! Now bring on the other summer dates!!

i'm pretty sure the weekend of Sept 1 is th BBKing's Blues Fest at RR. If they go with an August date, if you go by the RR events calendar, the weekends of 8/11 and 8/25 are still open. This is driving me crazy!!! I want to plan my summer vacation, but everything hinges on RR!!!!!!

susea - 3/26/2007 at 11:39 AM

Hmmm, BB King's Blues Fest you say?? Well, wonder who will be on the bill for that?

Rydethwind - 3/26/2007 at 03:09 PM

ok i am gonna blow a gasket we need dates summer is fast approaching ...

Southpaw - 3/26/2007 at 03:43 PM

Lovin the cover tunes these guys are doin' you can bet Red Rocks will be on the summer dates....would like to see the guys cover Procol Harums Conquistador. Old Coot yes, would like to see you again....did not have much mingle time at Jack &Phylis's,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------
Althought the dates are still subject to change, Jacquie is correct in that BB's blues fest is tentively scheduled for Sept. 1 at Red Rocks. Here is something I found on the Relix website about him and guests.
"B.B. King will once again spend the summer headlining his traveling namesake, The B.B. King Blues Festival. This year King has retooled his festival and, in the process, recruited an impressive mix of blues icons and rising roots music stars for his annual outing. Unlike previous editions of The B.B. King Blues Festival, this summerís festival will take place primarily on weekends at small amphitheaters and large theaters. In addition to King, the 17-date, 16-city outing will feature soul-icon Al Green and blues-diva Etta James. The festival will kick off July 24 at Hollywood, FLís Seminole Hard Rock Casino and wrap-up September 9 at Murphys, CAís Ironstone Vineyards. Highlights include an August 7 appearance at New York's Theatre at Madison Square Garden, a September 1 appearance at Morrison, CO's Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and a September 5 appearance at Los Angelesí Hollywood Bowl. Robert Randolph and James Hunter will sub for James and Green before King's Hollywood Bowl appearances. King's only two night stand will take place at Highland Park, IL's Ravinia Festival from August 28-29 with Joan Osborne severing as King's support. "

I sure hope Snowmass is not instead of Red Rocks.

Jeanne - 3/26/2007 at 08:01 PM

Tossing my 2 cents in .... I think Fri 8/31 sounds like a perfectly good night for an ABB show at Red Rocks.

Or, a dTb show in Boulder.

Carry on.

susea - 3/26/2007 at 10:18 PM

That's right Jack!! So we'll settle for 8/31 ABB. Perhaps we'll get Mule or DTB/Susan elsewhere on 9/1. For those who want to rest that gives them the opportunity. Then drive out to Aspen!! Works for me!!

Or last year's rumor that didn't happen-both on the same day.

susea - 3/26/2007 at 10:32 PM

It's all good as long as something is that weekend. If they were to book it the weekend of the 25th, that will be tricky to swing. I'd probably have to choose between the two!

SmilingJack - 3/27/2007 at 11:59 AM

No way Sue-just 3 weeks here, and i'll put you up whenever we have a vacancy!

susea - 3/27/2007 at 05:20 PM

LOL! Alrighty then. I don't want to stay here anyway!! LOL!

SmilingJack - 3/29/2007 at 07:11 AM

Everyone going to the Beacon this weekend have fun.

susea - 3/29/2007 at 11:53 AM

Thanks Jack!! Expect a call from us crazy people!!!

mprosser - 3/30/2007 at 03:57 PM

Looks like it will be ABB at Red Rocks on August 31st. Saturday 9/1 BB King is at Red Rocks, Sunday 9/2 ABB at Aspen Jazz Festival, and Monday 9/3 Mule and DTB/Susan T at Aspen Jazz Festival. Start making plans now.

Hi-Some of us have been taking a guess and hoping Red Rocks will be on 8/31 so out of state people can make a double trip. Did you hear this or read it somewhere or are you speculating also?

mprosser - 3/30/2007 at 08:21 PM

Speculation on the Firday 8/31 date. The Jazz Aspen dates are known - Check out the website. Then on Pollstar and elsewhere I saw that the BB King Fest is on Saturday. So Im speculating, I dont see them doing a weekday show. Also I saw STS9 was going to be at Red Rocks the following weekend on 9/7 and 9/8.

susea - 4/2/2007 at 12:52 AM

Tickets on sale Mon morning for the Aspen shows!

SmilingJack - 4/3/2007 at 06:47 PM

I hope Red Rocks is one of the new shows Lana said she had to post when she got home from the Beacon.

SmilingJack - 4/3/2007 at 06:59 PM

Oh well, just read the gb and the Red Rocks show was not one of the shows Lana posted-still hoping for the 8/31 show for a 'package deal' of shows that weekend.

susea - 4/3/2007 at 07:27 PM

Jack, we can always hope but in the meantime you should plan on Aspen!
