Geraldine Allman: In Loving Memory

Posted on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 - 02:25 PM

Geraldine Robbins Allman was born on July 8th, 1917 to Lizzie Williams Robbins and Simon Robbins in Nash County, North Carolina. She was their third child, born after her brother Swindel and sister Janie and before their baby brother Erskine. She was a fun-loving and outspoken child who loved to read and she excelled in school. She graduated with her siblings from West Edgecombe High School. While she maintained close and loving ties to her family all of her life, she was adventurous and independent, and longed to strike out on her own.

Jerry, as she was known to her friends, married Lieutenant Willis Turner Allman at the age of twenty-five, and moved with him to Nashville, Tennessee in 1945, where she gave birth to two sons, Howard Duane and Gregory Lenoir. Jerry was faced with the challenge of raising her boys as a single mother after Bill’s sudden death in 1950. She and her sons moved to Daytona Beach Shores, Florida in 1957 where she supported her family as a bookkeeper and office manager for local businesses, including the Bali and Julian’s Restaurants. She had a great mind for numbers and organization.

Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon, GA

Posted on Thursday, May 21, 2015 - 02:05 PM

A new Gregg Allman CD+DVD is coming out August 7, 2015.

On January 14, 2014, Gregg Allman brought his solo band to Macon for a performance at the venerable Grand Opera House, a 1,000 seat jewel of a theatre that was built in 1884. It was in this intimate setting that Gregg Allman Live: Back To Macon, GA was recorded.

Gregg took to the Grand Opera House stage with a group that, as he put it, “is a real kick-ass band.” Featuring Scott Sharrard on guitar, bassist Ron Johnson, Ben Stivers on keyboards, drummer Steve Potts, Allman Brothers veteran Marc Quinones on percussion, saxophonists Jay Collins and Art Edmaiston and Dennis Marion on trumpet, these eight players formed one of the best solo units Allman had fronted in years. With Gregg settled in behind his familiar Hammond B-3, Live: Back to Macon, GA kicks off with the familiar strains of “Statesboro Blues,” this time delivered with a horn-influenced sway. “I love having a horn section, man; it adds a real swing to the band,” Gregg noted. The crowd energy amped up another notch when Scott Sharrard picked out the opening licks to “I’m No Angel,” the title track to Gregg’s 1986 comeback album.

Butch Trucks to Sit In with Great Caesar's Ghost August 13

Posted on Monday, June 29, 2015 - 07:53 AM

On August 13, at The Stephen Talkhouse on Long Island, Amagansett, NY,
Allman Brothers Band founding member and drummer, Butch Trucks, joins jam band Great Caesar’s Ghost for an evening of improvisational rock, blues, and jazz.

Butch has been the “Freight Train” that has driven the rhythm section of The Allman Brothers band for the past 45 years. Great Caesar’s Ghost is a jam band that is celebrating it’s eleventh year of playing original and varied styles of music including the music of The Allman Brothers Band and The Grateful Dead.

Hittin’ The Note Magazine wrote this about Great Caesar’s Ghost: ” ......Every now and then a band comes across our radar that has that rare ability to ‘hit the note.' It is even more rare for us to come across a band that can play the Allman Brothers' music so well that it gets our attention. Great Caesar's Ghost is such a band." Trucks and Great Caesar’s Ghost teamed up for the double live CD “Live with Butch Trucks” in 2011.
