Double Live CD Documents 2003 ‘March Madness’ Run at the Beacon Theatre in New York City

Group to perform on 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien' March 16 in advance of the March 18 launch of this year's 'March Madness' engagement

The Allman Brothers Band, one of rock’s most acclaimed live acts and 1994 Hall Of Fame inductees will release a new double live CD March 23 on Peach/Sanctuary Records. Titled "One Way Out", it documents the band’s ‘March Madness’ run at the Beacon Theatre last year in New York City and features the 12-minute tour de force “Instrumental Illness,” for which the band has been nominated for a Grammy this year in the “Best Rock Instrumental Performance” category. "One Way Out" includes songs seen on last year’s platinum DVD "Live At The Beacon Theatre" as well as, additional live tracks from the Beacon performances.

Meanwhile, look for the Allman Brothers Band -- Gregg Allman (vocals and keyboards), Jaimoe (drums), Butch Trucks (drums and tympani), Warren Haynes (vocals, lead and slide guitar), Oteil Burbridge (bass), Marc Quiñones (congas and percussion) and Derek Trucks (slide and lead guitar)--to perform Tuesday, March 16 on “Late Night With Conan O‘Brien” in advance of this year’s “March Madness” Beacon shows beginning March 18th.

The 18-track "One Way Out" mixes Allman Brothers Band classics (among them “Dreams,” “Midnight Rider” and “Whippin’ Post”) with six songs from their critically acclaimed "Hittin’ The Note", the band’s latest studio album and their first album of new material in nine years (released last spring on Peach/Sanctuary Records). As Steve Morse noted in his Boston Globe review (3/28/03): “…one listen will convince you that the Allmans are really hitting a new peak,” while Jay Lustig raved in the Newark Star Ledger (3/16/03) “It often approaches and sometimes reaches the level of Allman recordings of yore.” Jay Babcock, writing in the LA Weekly (9/05/03) summed it up when he said: “…the general consensus is that the Allmans are stronger now than they’ve been in years; their stunning new album Hittin’ The Note certainly makes that case.”

Known as one of rock’s best live acts, the Allman Brothers Band were one of only two artists whose live albums ranked in the top 50 of Rolling Stone’s recently published list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The Allman Brothers Band was honored for At Fillmore East (while James Brown was saluted for Live At The Apollo).

The following songs appear on the cd but not on the "Live at the Beacon Theatre" DVD:

  • Every Hungry Woman
  • Wasted Words
  • Worried Down With The Blues
  • Trouble No More
  • Good Morning Little School Girl

In addition, the following songs are different performances on the CD than on the DVD:

  • Statesboro Blues
  • Dreams
  • Whipping Post

I know this going to be a great couple of CDs, and I'll get more use from the CD than the DVD, but does anyone know why they're calling it "One Way Out" when that song isn't on the album? Seems weird...

Mostly, I'm just bummed that the band didn't see fit to put "Layla" on either the DVD or CD. It's one of those unique highlihgts of last year's tour that would make the CD/DVD more special than a bunch of songs already on past live albums. Same goes for "Into the Mystic" and "Change Gonna Come" (neither of which made the CD).

I could also quibble about the lack of a "Mountain Jam," which might've justified the DVD being two discs, but I guess you can't have everything. Having some the guests from last year's Beacon run show up on the CD, especially Bela Fleck, however, would've made this an extra special release as well.

Sorry to gripe so much, but with all the ABB product we've gotten lately (HtN, the Beacon DVD, Atl. Pop and another Fillmore reissue), something needed to be done to make this new CD a little more unique.

I agree with other comments here: first, the ABB are at their peak; second, they have had so many excellent guest musicians that they really should take a cue from Gov’t Mule and do a live CD along the lines of “With A Little Help From Our Friends.” Being the impatient type, I went ahead and created one myself, made up of several of the “Instant Live” CD’s they did last summer that include outstanding performances by Karl Denson (flute and sax) and Branford Marsalis. I have to say, saxophone fits the ABB sound so well that they should get a full-time blower. Whipping Post with Branford in a demonic tizzy adds a fourth dimension to that classic tune. The Karl Denson version of “Instrumental Illness” is the best jazz improv song I’ve ever heard, hands down: Derek is out of this world, Karl goes to Alpha Centauri, then Warren hits hyper drive. Unbelievable. Oh, and my home-made “Best of Instant Live” CD includes Susan Tedeschi doing a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice,” a truly beautiful Warren Haynes tune “Patchwork Quilt” in solemn and transcending dedication to Jerry Garcia, and THE encore of all encores, Layla. And let's put one other thing to rest while I'm harping. Those who say Warren Haynes overpowers and outclasses Derek Trucks are crazy. These two are equals; in fact I personally like Derek's style better because it broader and he has a better ear for jazz. And those who say that Derek sounds "just like Duane Allman" also do a disservice to both. We'll never know where Duane would have gone with his talents, but Derek has moved far far beyond "Statesboro Blues." Derek is in a class by himself and is writing the book on both slide guitar playing and on music genres. What do you call him? A blues guitarist? Rock? Jazz? World?

I’m sure the tunes on “One Way Out” are good, but I’ve already got the DVD (ripped it to CD so I can listen to it in the car), and my private “Instant Live” compilation is, in my opinion, the best collection of live ABB songs ever, surpassing even the Fillmore concerts because of the far greater variety of songs the band is doing these days. There is no band like the current version of the ABB. Oh, one last comment. Saw them with the Dead at the Gorge on July 3rd. The Dead put on a good show and their legions of followers are legendary, but there is no comparison in terms of musicianship, even with Warren Haynes and ex ABB guitarist Jimmy Herring as the hired axmen…
