Guitar Chords

Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast

Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow havin' fun,
But back home he'll always run
To sweet Melissa... mmm...

Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the Gypsy's name

No one hears his lonely sigh,
There are no blankets where he lies.
In all his deepest dreams the Gypsy flies
with sweet Melissa... mmm...

Again the morning's come,
Again he's on the run,
Sunbeams shining through his hair,
Appearing not to have a care.
Well, pick up your gear and Gypsy roll on, roll on.

Crossroads, will you ever let him go? (Lord, Lord)
Will you hide the dead man's ghost,
Or will he lie, beneath the clay,
or will his spirit roll away?

But I know that he won't stay without Melissa.

Yes I know that he won't stay without Melissa.

Yeah really a great hippie song. One of my very favorites, never heard them play it live, not sure if they ever did, but a great tune for the times.

Best ABB song there is. I have yet to hear it live but will go to every show I can until I do and then keep on going to their shows. No show I've experienced can compare to an ABB show.

This is an amazing song. It is not the first song duane wrote and kept. this song was written by gregg, it was duane's favorite though. If you read Midnight Riders, it tells you that in the book

Though it's hard to choose from among so many great ABB songs over so many years, "Melissa" is my favorite, too--I named my daughter (born on my birthday) after this song. And the first outing my wife and I had after the baby was born was to see the Brothers at Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta in October 1991 !!

Will his spirit float away not roll away.

The real title is just Melissa... minor correction: that line in the last verse goes "Will his spirit float away," not roll.

I just wanted to say that I sure hope you play this song "Melissa" at your concert this weekend (09-21-02) in Birmingham, AL. I named my daughter Melissa because I loved this song so much. She and I are going to the concert and must hear this song live. We are so excited. She is 19 and has never seen the Allman Brothers before and can't wait. We love your website. Thanks. Sherry
